My invention relates to saw guides of the undercutter support type; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous saw guide of the type set forth, as hereinafter described and deiinitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiicationz Figure 1 represents a side elevational View of the novel guide.
Fig. 2 represents atop plan view of the guide.
Fig. 3 represents an end elevational view of the guide.
Fig. 4 represents a fragmentary detailed:
sectional view.
Fig. 5 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Y
Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary vertical ectional View through the upper portion of Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the usual sawing horse upon which the log 6 is supported.
In carrying out the present invention it can be seen that numeral 7 represents a head having a bore 8 therethrough for receiving the shank 9 of the yoke 10. The head 7 is bifurcated as at 11 for receiving the ratchet wheel 12 which is secured on the shank 9. The head 7 `is provided with a depending shank 13 on which the knurled ferrule 14 is slidable. Within the bifur-cated head 7 are the pawls 15-15 which are swingably mounted and adapted to be urged inwardly by the ferrule 14 to engage teeth of the ratchet wheel 12 tofdetermine the angular disposition of the bearing unit generally referred to by numeral 16 with respect to the head 7.
An L-shaped bar 17 has mounted thereon a circumferentially grooved revoluble saw guide 16, anti-friction balls 19 being interposed between said guide 16 and the lateral portion 20 of the member 17.
To secure this device to the log 6, an elongated blade 21 is provided, the same being disposed through the yoke 10 where it is secured bythe pin 22 and provided at its rear end with a striker head 23 which issecured to the blade 21 by the rivet or pin 24. The opposite end of the blade 21 is sharpened as at 25 to facilitate entrance into the log 6 when the head 23 is struck with a hammer or mallet.
The saw 26 rests in and upon the pulleylike bearing 16. To provide for the proper positioning of this bearing, the ferrule 14 can be slipped on the shank 13 to release the pawls 1515 and when the proper angular position of the L-shaped member 17 has been secured in respect to the head 7 the ferrule is returned upwardly to urge the pawls 15-15 inwardly to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 12.
It will also be appreciated that in the manner described the bearing 16 can be readily raised as the sawing and the upward movement of the saw blade 26 progress.
While the foregoing speciication sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without 'Jo departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The herein described saw guide of the un- '55 dercutter support type, consisting essentially 'of a member having an upright portion with a lateral arm at its lower end and a head at its upper end, said head being provided with a vertical bifurcation and with a horizontal to boreintersecting said bifurcation, an upright circumferentially grooved revoluble saw guide mounted on said lateral arm of the member, a toothed disk turnable in said upy right bifurcation of the head, a ferrule mov- S5 able on the upright portion of said member, pawls mounted in the head and adapted to be urged inwardly by said ferrule to engage the teeth of said ratchet disk, a yoke disposed at A the opposite side of the vertical plane of the head, with reference to said saW guide, and having a horizontal bifurcation open at its Outer end and also having av shank turnable in the horizontal bore of the head and fixed to said ratchet disk, and aV blade pinned in the horizontal bifurcation of the yoke and having` a forward sharp end and also having a head at its rear end and disposed in rear of said yoke.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
ROY L. COBLE.
