As the top rail is supported by vertical posts, I have devised arconstruction by which the sliding bar may not only be arranged beneath the top rail, but may be guided by the clamps which connect the posts 'to the top rail, andin these clamps, protected anti-friction bearings may" be arranged for the actuating bar, the construction being such as to prevent hay, chafi' or the like from entering the clamps and operation of the roller bearings. j
Therefore, one Of the objects of the present invention is to provide a stall of this char:
actor, in which certain of the clamps not only" join the top rail to the vertical posts, but also function as anti-friction guides for the actuating rod of the stanchions.
Another object is to furnish a structure of this type in which the hinged members of the stanchions are connected to the sliding operating bar by means of novel latches, so
that one or more cows may be held by their stanchions while the other cows are released, and vice versa.
A further object is to provide in such a mechanism, special latches for positively securing the hinged members of the stanchions to the fixed members of the latter, so that any one of said hinged members 5 may be locked in closed position when desired.

Movable sure stop'rods 30 are pivotally connected at 31 to the sliding bar, and their lower ends engage eyes inbrackets-32 which are secured on the posts 11. In actual practice, stationary sure stop rods 33 are also mounted on these posts. i
The fixed members 34 suspended by swivels 35 from the swivel supports25, and theyare joined by chains 36 to the foundation beam, whilethe movable members37 of the stanchionsare pivotally connected to the fixed members by means of hinges 38. Furthermore, my construction'allows any one of the-movable members of the stanchions to be latched to, tuating bar, so that one or more of the cows f may-be retained by their stanchions, .while the remainder of the cows are released by the actuation of a common hand control.

In a structure of the character described, a stanchion having a movable member provided with a projecting part, an op erating member, a bracket fixedly secured to the operatin member, a latch structure carried by the bracket and engaging said projecting part, and a sliding keeper for the latch structure slidably mounted on said bracket, said keeper having a finger-piece designed to hold the latch structure in open position.

In a structure of the character described, a stanchion including a movable member provided with a projecting finger, an operating bar, a bracket mounted on said bar and having projecting lugs to engage said finger, and a latch pivotally mounted on the bracket and having tines adapted to straddle said lugs and to also engage said finger.

In a structure of the character described, a stanchion including a movable member provided with a projecting finger, an operating bar, a bracket mounted on said bar and having projecting lugs to engage said finger, a latch pivotally mounted on the bracket and having tines adapted to straddle said lugs and to also engage said finger, and a keeper for the latch slidably mounted on said bracket.
10.
