This machine is for the purpose of boring at the same time a number of series of radlal holes in an article, more particularly in the barrel of a spool.
In the barrels of such spools, there is a central hole extending along the axis and aroundit a plurality of other parallel holes and it is desirable to bore into these last named holes a series of radial passages.
As shown, this machine is intended to bore three longitudinal sets of radial holes each set comprising four, the total being twelve holes all radially disposed.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device showing the bits withdrawn.
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the bits advanced.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the machine viewed from the front. y
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional detail of a spool in position with the bits retracted.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section looking down on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section of Fig.5 on the line 66 looking in the direction of the arrow, the spool being removed.
In the drawings, A represents a frame which is shown as supported by a column 10.
9 is a table or base at a convenient height for the operator and, as shown, there are three sets of supporting rods 11, 12 and another set not shown which carry adjustably the brackets 14, 15 and 16 which support respectively the three motors M M and M and also the ways K K and K for the mul tiple bit driving heads H H and H By means of suitable tightening bolts such as indicated at 17 the brackets with the motors and heads can be adjusted by moving back and forth towards the center 01"? the machine. As shown, the motors are driven by suitable electrical conductors carried by suitable housings X, Y and Z.
R- is a work rest which supports the work shown as a spool 1V having a central hole 1 and other holes 2, 3 and 4.
Rest R includes a base 20 from which projects upwardly at the center of the rest the work holding center pin 21 and a positioning MULTIPLE BIT BORING MACHINE Serial No. 510,494.
pin and is in position to enter anyone of the holes 2, 3 or 4 in the work.
The spool, as shown, has a barrel 5through which are the longitudinal holes 1, 2, 3 and 4 i around center pin 20, each guide being provided with a vertical series of radially disposed bit guide holes 31, 32, 33, 34.
These holes in each guide are in vertical alinement and preferably taper from a large size outside to a smaller size inside, their purpose being to steady the drills 41, 42, 43, 44, as the driving heads move'inward.

The positioning pin 22 should be in line with one of the series of holes in one of these bit guides. l
K K and K indicate sets of head guideways radially disposed around the center pin 21. As shown, each comprises two rods upon which slides a yoke 40 forming part of one of the heads H H and H Extending down from each yoke is a head link pivot such as 61.
Each head such as 'H includes a barrel 45 attached to a yoke 40 and slidable in and out of a casing 46.
This construction of head is well known and it is not deemed necessary to. describethe interior mechanism by which each motor handle T pivoted at so that its center of movement is directly in line with the center of center pin 21 said pivots being spaced around said pin.
L L and L are operating links each pivoted at one end to a handle link pivot 51,52, or 53 and at the other end to ahead link pivot such as 61.
The centeripin 21 should fit the center hole 1..snugly and should extend up far enough so'that it will hold thetop of spool W steady while the short positioning pin v22 should extend up to the position below the lowest bit.

guide S which as shown-carries'also the bit guides G G and G and has holes corresponding with those in the bit guides.
.Treferably the whole assembly can beattachedor detached as by the use of'oap screws shownin Fig. 6 and preferably head guide S -.is formed as a ring at the bottom 50 and with a plurality of openings 151 151 through which aI-spool can be reached whilethe top is chamfered and 52 whereby :a .spool can readily Ebe slipped in place on thepins and can afterwards be quicklyremoved Iby reaching in through the openings 51.
As shownin Fig; 6, the spoolheads may fit snugly inside of guide S orloosely'asshown in Fig.4 as the center'pinz2l and positioning .pin22, if they fit their respective holes such as 1 and 3.,1Will1h0ld the spool accurately :in place while it is being bored.
. In fact both the bit iguides G ,-G G :and the head guide S can be entirely'removed or omitted if desired.
I claim:
1. The combination in a multiple bit boring :machine; of a frame ;-'a work rest carried by" the 'frame and having an upwardly projecting Work holding centre pin and a positioning pin; a plurality of vertical ibit guides spaced around the centre pin each having a vertical series of radial .bit guide holes; a plurality of sets of head guideways radially disposed around the centre pin; aplurality of multiple bit driving heads each head-thaving a set of vertically alined revoluble bits each set being in horizontal'alinement with a series of bit guide holes each head being slida'ble on a set of .ways towards and from :the centre pin andeach'head having a link pivot an operating handle pivoted on the frame on the same centre with the centre pin and having handle link pivots spacedaround isai'd centre; and a plurality of operating links,

3. The combination in a multiple bit boring machine; of a frame; a work rest carried by the frame; a iplurality of sets of head guide .Ways'iradially-dispose'd around the work rest; a plurality ofmultiple bit drivingheadseach head having a set of vertically alined revoluble bits, each head being slidable on aset .of Fways'to'wards and fromthe work rest and eachhea'd having'a link pivot; an operating :handle pivoted-on the frame on the same centrerwith the work restand having handle link pivots spaced around said centre; and
a plurality of operatinglinkgeach pivoted at one-end'to .a handle link pivot andatthezother end to a head linkpivot.
4. The-combination in a multiple bit boring I machine, ofa 'frame;'ajwork rest carried by the frame and having an upwardly projecting work holding centre pin and a positioning pin; a plurality of'sets, of head guide ways radially disposed around the centre pin; a plurality of'multiple bit driving heads each headhavi'ng a :set of vertically alined revolublerbitsyeach head being slidableona set of waystowardsand from the centre pin ;'and means to move the "heads to and from "the centre pin.
5. The combination in'a multiple bit boring machine; of a frame; a work rest carriedby the frame and having an upwardly projecting work holding centre pin anda' positioning pin; a plurality of sets of head guide ways radially disposed around the centre pin =a-pluralit-y-of'bit driving heads each head having arevoluble bit, each head being slidable on a-set of ways towards and from the centre-pin; and means to move the heads to and from the centre pin. i
