Description
MEAT PRES S Filed July 2, 1931 INVENTORS Witryess- ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 22, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALTER BELLINGHAUSEN AND MARINU'S .VANDERKLOO'JL- OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO INDUSTRIAL PATENTS CORPORATION, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE MEAT PRESS Application filed July 2, 1981. Serial No. 548,389.
The invention appertains to compression apparatus and specifically to a press for reducing meat to compact form and shape for convenience of handling and advantageous marketing.
The invention provides a device of the character aforesaid which is eflicient for the purpose stated, substantial in structure,
easily operable and capable of withstanding severe strain without becoming disabled.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to behad to the drawing hereto attached and the subjoined description in which corresponding parts are designated in the several views of the drawing and referred to in the specification by like reference characters.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view of a press illustrative of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, central, longitudinal, sectional view thereof.
.Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking to the right as designated by the arrows. Y
Fig- 4 is a perspective view of a slight modification in which an end wall is hinged, as shown in open position.
The pressing or forming chamber comprises a bottom 1, side walls 2 and 3-, and end walls 4 and 5. This chamber may be formed in any manner, and in practice it is preferred to construct the same of metal, the bottom 1 and side walls 2and 3 constituting parts of a single casting. The end walls 4 and 5 are separate'and bolted to the side walls. Strengthening ribs 6 brace the side walls and are interposed between the respec tive walls and extensions of the bottom. In this manner, the chamber is substantial in structure and capable of withstanding severe compressive strain. The side wall 2 projects some distance above-the side wall 3 to provide a guide for the plunger and also receives a bracket 7 which is bolted or otherwise secured thereto and in which the compressing screw 8 is mounted.
An abutment is located within an end portion of the pressing or forming chamber 9 ferred construction consists of a casting and isof a length and width to fit snugly between the walls of the pressing chamber 9.
The open side of the plunger faces upwardly and is provided with a cap plate 14.- to which is fitted a collar 15. Lips 16 project outwardly from the ends of the plunger 13 and are adapted to engage the end walls 4 and 5 and limit the downward movement of the plunger. The compressing screw 8 is mounted in the overhanging portion of the bracket 7 and its lower end engages the collar 15 by means of a swivel joint. Rotation of the screw 8 in one direction lowers the plunger and, compresses the material contained in the chamber 9. A reverse rotation of the screw 8 elevates the plunger, thereby admitting of access to the pressing chamber for supplying material thereto or removing the compressed article.
By bolting the end walls to the body of the chamber, either one or both may be read ily removed when access to the chamber is desired. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the end wall 5 is hinged to the side wall 2; and when closed is made secure by means of turn buttons 17 engaging slots 18 formed in the outer edge portion of the swinging end I bottom 1 and sides 2 and 3 en bloc, joints are obviated and the side walls may be substantially braced to withstand the pressure that may be exerted to reduce the meat or other product to compact form.
What is claimed is:
a A press comprising a forming chamber and a cooperating plunger, a yieldable abutment within an end portion of the forming chamber, an adjusting screw threaded into an end wall of the forming chamber, a plate connected to the inner end of said adjusting screw and movable by said screw, yieldable means between said plate and said abutment,
'an end wall, hinged to form a swinging end v wall and means to lock said swinging end wall 'in closed position.
Signed at Chicago, in the county. of Cook and State of Illinois, this 24th day of June,
WALTER BELLINGHAUSEN. MARINUS VANDERKLOOT.
