CORPORATION OF MASSACEUSE'I'IS ADHESIVE :emnmo TAPE The present invention relates to an improved adhesive binding tape and has for an object the provision of a tape which carries its own adhesive completely covering one 5 face but arranged in such relation as to eliminate the possibility of gumming the tape guide and needle of sewinghmafchines used in stitching the tape along t e edge of a sheet of material to be bound.
Another object is to provide a tape of the class described with a composite adhesive coating comprising two side by side longitudinal stripes of heat plastic material one of which is thicker .or heavier than the other.
Another object is to provide a composite coating wherein two stripes of heat plastic adhesive together form a complete covering for one side of the tape and wherein the materials of the stripes carry a substance which 20 acts as a lubricant to facilitate guiding and stitching and which furthermore serves as a.
flux for the adhesive when subjected to heat so that the edge of the tape to be stitched may carry a greater quantity of this lubrieating I substance during the stitching operation and, upon heatingthe tape this lubricant may efi'ect a dispersion of the lubricating substance uniformly through both applications ofadhesive. Another object is to provide a fully coated heat plastic tape wherein the adhesive is relatively thicker at one longitudinal side of the tape than at the other and wherein the adhesives carry a substance which will efiect substantially an even distribution of the adhesives over said face when the tape is subjected to heat. 7
These and other objects and advantages are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged perspective view of a short section of the tape of this inventio prior to heating. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the tape after it has been subjected to heat and ready 'for application.
In the preparation of the heat plastic French binding tape of the invention the ribbon or tape 5 of silk or other suitable fabric of the desired color is employed and may comprise a tape with a selvage 6 along one edge, or along both edges as shown in the drawing. Extending longitudinally along one longitudinal edge 60 of the tape is a coating or layer of heat plastic adhesive 7 which has in its composition a substance which will 'act as a mechanical lubricant to avoid stitching trouble and tape guide trouble at the sewing machine when this tape is stitched along the selvage edge 60 to a sheet of material to be bound with the tape. The lubricant may be any kind which is capable of intimate mixture with the heat plastic adhesive and which will not be driven out to stain and saturate the fabric of the tape when heated. Hydrocarbons of the parafiin series have been found to afl'ord excellent mechanical lubricant for the purpose and, in the adhesive composition for the coating 7 this lubricant is used in the proportion of about 8% per unit of heat plastic adhesive substance. It is to be noted here that this resulting heat plastic composition contains an abundance of lubricant for all working conditions, the most difficult of which is high atmospheric temperature. The width of this stripe or coating of heat plastic adhesive with what may be termed a high lubricant content may be arbitrary set at slightly more than one-half the width of the tape. It will be understood that this width of coating is not absolute but merely a desirable one. The thickness of this coating is preferably much less than 5 the distance from the face of the tape 5 to the top edge of the selvage 60. The thickness of the coating is preferably about .005 This is the edge which is to be stitched 'to the sheet and it is desirable that the selvage 90.
60 be present to preclude tearing out of the stitching.
The opposite longitudinal edge of the tape 5 may have a selvage 6 or the selvage may be dispensed with as desired. A second longitudinal heat plastic adhesive coating 8 extends from the selvage edge 6 (or a corresponding serrated raw edge) and overlaps slightly the coating 7 This coating 8 is preferably about .025 in thickness which brings the top face of the coating 8 to about the level of the top of the selvage. The composition of the coating 8 includes the substance which will act as a flux so that upon heating of the tape the adhesive of both strips 7 and 8 may intermingle and the lubricant in the strip 7 may intermingle with the flux adhesive 1n the coating 8. It has been found that if the heat plastic adhesive composition used in the strip 8 has incorporated therein about one-half of the amount of hydro-carbon lubricant substance used in the coating 7 (i. e. about 4% hydro-carbon of the paraflin series) an excellent flux" is provided.
In its broader aspects, the invention may be carried out by providing a covering for one complete face of the tape comprising two side by side coatings of heat plastic adhesive which are of different composition in that the edge to be stitched contains a suficient amount of mechanical lubricant to assure free movement of the tape through the tape guide of a sewing machine and free movement of the needle and thread through the tape covered by said adhesive, and the other adjacent adhesive coating shall have incorporated in its composition a substance which shall serve to flux a coating and permit a mingling and homogenizing of the two coatings when subjected to heat and to further ta e up the lubricant sufiiciently to assure good adhesion of the tape to the material to which it is applied. In the embodiment herein disclosed the same ingredients in different proportions efiect these several results.
In making the binding tape of the present invention the thin adhesive coating 7 with r the slight excess of lubricant may be applied first and the remaining coat 8 may be applied afterward in slightly overlapping relation if desired. In this way a very uniform prodnot is obtained as may be noted by the relatlvely shiny or lustrous appearance of the face of coating 8 and the relatively dull or lusterless face of the coating 7.
The tape is stored on rolls or spools which may be mounted on the sewing machine for delivering the tape as required as it is stitched along the selvage edge 60 to a shoe quarter or the like. During this time it will be found that both surfaces are sufficiently lubricated to avoid adhesion.
The work with the binding tape of the invention is then submitted to a French foldor and the tape is preferably rendered plastic by the application of heat just prior to the turning and pressing of the tape by the folding machine. One folding device for performing-this work is shown in my application Serial N 0. 363,236 filed May 15, 1929, wherein the so-called rotary French folding machine is equipped with a tube or nozzle for directing a continuous stream of heated air to that face of the tape carrying the adhesive.
When the tape is subjected to heat, as just explained, or by holding it in a heated chamher or by holding a flame near it, the adhesive melts and becomes tacky. Furthermore the two slightly different adhesive compositions flux and the lubricant is dispersed substantially uniformly throughout the two adhesive coatings which homogenize and tend to flow to a common level 87 It is possible, but not necessary, that the coating will become uniform in thickness entirely across the face of the ta e if suflicient heat is directed thereto. owever the dispersion of the lubricant appears to take place almost immediately upon application of heat and the adhesive is homogenized so that the tape will adhere very effectively regardless of how rapidly it may be heated and folded onto the shoe quarters or the like.
Upon adhesion of the tape to the shoe quarter and setting it will be found the total amount of lubricant which has now been distributed entirely across the tape is not sufiicient to bloom to an edge or surface hence a very tenacious adhesion is effected.
As indicated in dotted lines at 9 in Fig. 1, the edge 6 may be serrated to any desired dzpth in lieu of a selvage or a straight raw e ge. i
What is claimed is:
1. As a new article of manufacture a heat plastic adhesive tape wherein one face of the tape is completely covered by two longitudinal coatings of heat plastic adhesive in side by side relation, one of the coatings being relatively thinner than the other, the thinner coating including in its composition a substance serving as a mechanical lubricant for stitching when cold.
2. As a new article of manufacture a heat plastic binding tape one face of which is completely covered by two longitudinal side by side layers of heat plastic adhesive, said layers being of different thickness, and the adhesive of each layer being different in that a thick layer contains a small percentage of flux material and the thin layer contains arelatively larger percentage of lubricating substance, the adhesive, flux, and lubricant being of such nature as to homogenize upon the application of heat.
3. As a new article of manufacture a full coated heat plastic binding tape having two side by side layers of heat plastic adhesive of different thickness, the adhesive of each layer having a hydrocarbon of theparaflin series in a quantity inversely proportional to the thiclmess of the layer.
4. As a new article of manufacture a full coated heat plastic adhesive binding tape comprising a fabric tape having on its one face two side by side contacting layers of adhesive substance extending longitudinally thereof, one layer being relatively thinner than the other and having in its composition a hydro-carbon substance which serves as a lubricant when the adhesive is cold and which may disperse uniformly throughout both layers upon heating of the tape.
