This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows,and particularly to reversible plows. f I
One object of the invention is to PI'OVlClQ a 5 device of this character which is simple n construction, easy to operate, and which 1s effective in its operation.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to be drawn and wherein simple and efficient controls are arranged for manipulation by the driver from the tractor.
Another object is to provide a novel and simple means whereby to permit the easy and in the ground, or the removal thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents an arched axle, the ends of which are provided with the ground wheels 11. Disposed vertically over the axle is the double arched member 12, the lower ends of the two outer arms of which are provided with the eye portions 13, receiving the axle 1O rotatably therein. The lower end of the intermediate arm of the double arched member 12 is provided with an eye portion 14, arranged at a higher level than the eyes 13, receiving slidably therein the longitudinally extending shaft 15. Loosely mounted on the forward end portion of the shaft 15 is a collar 16, and connected to said collar are the forward downwardly curved ends of the brace rods 17, the rear ends of said rods being secured to the outer arm portions of the member 12, intermediate the ends thereof, whereby to aid in supporting the forward end of said shaft. The members 12' and 17, together with the braces 18, constitute a supporting frame for the device. Secured to the upper portion of each outer arm of the member 12 is one end of a brace arm 18 which extends downwardly and forwardly where it is secured to the intermediate portion of the adjacent brace rod 17, by means of the bolt 19. On this bolt 19 is pivotally mounted a bent lever 20, which has its lower end pivotally connected with one end of an upwardly extending link 21, pivotally mounted on its other end on an arm 10, carried rigidly by the axle 10, adjacent the wheel. Mounted on the brace rod 17 ad 6 jacent the upper end of the lever 20 is a toothed segment 22, with which is engaged a pawl 23 carried by said lever, whereby to permit rocking of the arched axle 10, for the purpose of raising and lowering the plows with respect to the ground through the medium of the said link 21. Carried by the forward end of the shaft 15 is a vertical member 24, to the lower end of which is connected a bar 25, having its forward end adapted for connection with the draft lug of a tractor, not shown, but which will be readily understood. Oarrieclbythe rear end of theibar 25 is a clevis 26 which is slidably engaged with an approximately circular member 37 disposed vertically and transversely of the front of the plow device, and secured to the forward end of .thebeams 27 and 28, and rotatable therewith.

The outer beams 28 are disposed in parallel relation to the beams 27, and each has its rear endv diverged into parallel relation with the rear. end portions of the beams 27, and provided with the 9 plows 30. The forward end of each beam 28 converges with relation to a beam 27 and is secured, at its forward end, to one of said beams. Transverse connecting bars 31 and 32 extend between the beams at the points where the rear portions of the beams 27 and 28 are connected together and where the forward ends thereof begin to diverge, said bars being secured to said beams for properly holding them in spaced relation. Each of the bars 31 and 32 extends across the shaft 15, and is formed with the curved portions 33, receiving said shaft, a similarly curved short bar 34 being disposed below the shaft and having its ends secured to a bar 31 or 32. The rear end of the shaft 15 is provided with a nut 35, and encircling the shaft, between the said nut, and the curved portions of the adjacent bars 31 and 34, is a coil spring 36, whereby when the shaft is pulled longitudinally by the tractor, the spring will be compzessed so that the draft or pull will then exerted on the clevis, and thence on the plow beams thereby serving as a shock absorber for the device, upon initial pull being exerted thereon.
Pivotally mounted on each of the plow frames is a latch member 38, each of which is adapted to engage in a circular groove 39, formed between an end of the member A and the securing nut thereof, said latches serving to hold the plow frames against rotation on the shaft 15, when one set of plows 29 is engaged in the ground. These latches are connected to the rods 41, which extend rearwardly of the machine, and are connected to ther and supported in the member 37 t will be noted that the axle comprises the two parts 10 and 10, the inner ends of which are rotatably held within the member A, so that either or both of the levers 20 may be operated, whereby to swing or rotate either or both of the axle parts. This permits the operator to adjust the machine so that one side is higher than the other, to accommodate the machine to use on a hillside.
Upon grasping the circular member 37, and turning the same, the beams 27' and 28 will be rotated so as to depress one set of plows, for engagement in the ground, and at the same time elevate the other set of plows. Thus, either set of plows may be used, in accordance with the direction of the slope of thehillside, which the machine is operatin upon.
at is claimed is:
1. A plowing machine comprising a supporting frame, a longitudinal shaft slidable in said frame, a plow frame on the shaft, resilient means on one end of the shaft engaged with the plow frame, and means on the other end of the shaft for attachment to a draft means for sliding the shaft to compress said resilient means and exert a direct pull on the plow frame and supporting frame.
2. A plowing machine including a supportmg frame, a longitudinal shaft slidable in the frame, a plow frame supported on said shaft and bearing against said supporting frame to permit the shaft to slide therethrough, a spring device on the shaft between an end of the latter and said plow frame, and draft means on the other end of the shaft whereby the force exerted by the initial pull on said shaft will be taken up by said spring device, and the final force compress said spring device whereby to transfer such force to said plow frame and said supporting frame.
3. A plowing machine including a support, a longitudinal shaft, a plow frame mounted on the shaft, said shaft being slidable in the support and having means at one end for connection to a tractor or the like and a resilient means at the other end thereof engaged with said plow frame, and connections between the plow frame and the connections with the tractor whereby to permit automatic shifting of the draft from the tractor connections to the plow frame upon resisting engagement of the plows in the ground.
