.UNITED STATES PATENT; OFF-ICE HENRY J. STEELI, OF CEDAR GROVE, NEW JERSEY sm'rnnme mcmnn PALLET A neemn filed January 20, 1930. Serial No. 422,220.
Heretofore, in order to strengthen iron unbreakable for the uses intended, by reason castings, and particularly with comparativeof the presence of such rod. 1y thin sections that have to withstand shock While the percentage of nickel in the steel and strain, a reinforcing member, such as rod or membermay be variable for the dean ordinary steel or iron bar or rod, has been sired casting, I find that a nickel steel rod 50 placed 1 the mold before the iron for the including steel of any desired composition casting has been poured therein, to embed having-from 3% to 5% of nickel therein when the bar in the resulting casting. It has been used as a reinforcing memberin cast iron found that ordinary carbon steel rods or bars, becomes non-crystalline and has increased embedded in the iron castings, crystallize and strength. 7 55 become brittle, doubtless due to the sudden My improvement may beused in various heating of the rods or bars by the enveloping relations where strong metal castings are demolten cast metal and the gradual cooling sired and the same is particularly useful in 7 thereof, hence such rods or bars become usemaking pallets for sintering machines which less in the castings for the purposes of a reincontain heated ores while traveling on tracks. 60 forcement. In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a The O j ect of my iIIVeII iOD is t0 produce l plan view of a pallet for a sintering machine, inforced metal castings that will have innd Fi 2 is a section on line 2, 2, in Fig. 1. creased strength as compared to the strength, The numeral 1 indicates an iron casting'in of an unreinforced casting of the same metal. th f f a ll t fo a sintering machine 5 In carrying out my invention I place in a embodying my improvement, wherein the mold a reinforcing member, Such s a 61 nickel steel reinforcing rod 2 is embedded in or bar, that will not become crystallized from d i t t ith th c ti Thi i t h of the molten metal Poured around complished by placing the rod in the mold for and P molten metal into Said e t0 the casting and pouring the molten iron into embed Said member and 1 the Cestmg the mold around the rod to embed the rod in containing said member t0 9 1n the meldthe casting in contact with the cast metal,
I have discovered that a nickel steel memft hi th ti t i i th d i embedded in cast metal 'll g the east" allowed to cool in the mold. By reason of the ing does t become crystalhzed e does not heat of the molten metal of the casting 1 emlose its g t' a but t Stren h bedding the rod 2 the tensile strength of the rather becomes lncl'eased and stud er latter becomes greatly increased, the rod does greatly mcreflses the strength h casmig not become crystallized and the casting becompared Wlth Such castmg mmus Smd comes practically unbreakable in the use for o memben which it is made. My improved pallet is F91 some purpose-S I place mckel Steel ca able of withstandino' repeated heating and rod in a mold as a reinforce and pour molten It 1 t d th e S iron into the mold to embed said rod in the t P W 16 1 1 15 i g ifi 6 i S casting, andI allow the casting to cool. The 0 sltltermg 0,011 mm E 8 P 8 nickel steel alloy becomesheat-treated from well as Shocks lncldent to schargmg 5111' the heat of the molten metal embedding it teled e i e e Pallet f Pe in such a way that the rod becomes greatly i the same in a sintering machine, during which creased in tensile strength with a non-crystaluses the rod does not become crystallized and line structure, with the result that the castthe strength of the casting and its durability ing containing the rod becomes practically is increased.
Having now described my invention what I-claim is:
1. A sintering machine pallet comprising a cast iron bod'y containing one or more nickel steel reinforcing rods embedded therein, said rods containing less than 5% of nickel. I
2. A sintering machine pallet comprising a cast iron body containing one or more nickel steel reinforcing rods embedded therein, said i'ods containing between three and five per cent of nickel.
HENRY J0 STEI-ILI.
