Description

Nov. 22, 1932. c. B. HARBlsoN 1,888,224
SIDE FRAME Filed May 18. 1931 if .www I Patented Nov. 22, 1932 UNITED STATES sATENrorFicE OF OHIO sinn rnjAiirEl f Application led May 18, 1931. Serial No. 538,097.
This invention relates to improvements in' railway trucks of the type including'a side frame and bolster, and has for lts principal object to provide an improved construction of trucks of the character described, wherein room is provided for a relatively large number of springs between the bolster and the spring plank, with means on said spring plank providing maximum strength and support for the springs, but permitting ready access thereto for removal.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement for strengthening the side frame adjacent the spring plank.
Other objects of the invention will appear from time to time as the description proceeds.
The invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view of a side frame and bolster constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a detail section taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail section tak-en on line 3 3 of Figure 1, with parts broken away.
Referring to details of the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing, a truck side frame is indicated generally at 10 and comprises a compression member 11tension member 12 and vertical columns 13, 13. A bolster is indicated generally at 14, the end of which extends between the columns 13, 13.
The portions of the tension member 12 between the columns 13, 13 are flanged laterally at 16, 16 to form a widened base for the spring plank 15 and the springs mounted thereon. The frame is strengthened by reinforcing angle ribs 17, 17 formed at the inner and outer meeting corners of the columns 13 and the flanged extensions 16, as clearly shown in the several figures.
The spring plank 15 is made wider at the longitudinal center line of the side frameso as to accommodate three springs 21, 21, 21 arranged in alignment between the upright columns 13, 13. Two pairs of springs 22, 22 and 23, 23 are arranged on the inside and outside of the center springs 21 on the nar- Y rowed portions 'of -the spring plank, Said spring plank is provided with upstanding flanges 24,24 along the main'body thereof, said ianges extending continuouslyy at a'funiform heighty to the point where the spring plank .enters the columns 13,v 13 betweenthe inner angle ribs 17, 17 and fromthence said iianges are decreased in height to a point at the sidesof thel center springs 21, 21, 21, as indicated at-21a. This permits the spring plank and its flanges to be formed from al sheet of metal of uniform width;k Beyond said v center springs the side viianges are omitted andthe margins of theplank are cut away as indicated at 25, so as to lighten the spring plank and increase the convenience of removing the nest of springs,'andjparticu larly the center Asprings V21. A' 'i i 01110 STEEL FoUNDnycoM- Although I have illustrated and described Y l one particular embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I ydo not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, but that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a truck, a side frame including compressionandtension members and a pair of upright columns, said tension member having laterally extending flanges Vforming an extended support, a spring plank resting on said support, said spring plank having laterally projecting portions between j said columns adapted to accommodate a plurality of coil springs, and upright flanges formed along the opposite sides of said spring plank, said flanges being of reduced height along the sides of said widened portions of saidV spring plank and terminating immediately in front of said widened portions to permit the adjacent springs .to be withdrawn forwardly therefrom.V
2. In a truck, a side frame including compression and tension members and a pair of upright columns, said tension member havingv laterally extending flanges forming an extended support, a spring plank resting on said support, said spring plank having laterally projecting portions between said columns adapted to accommodate a plurality of coil springs, and upright flanges formed along the opposite sides of said spring plank, said flanges being of reduced height along the sides of said widened portions of said spring plank and terminating immediately in front of said widened portions to permit the adjacent springs to be withdrawn forwardly thereform, and the side margins of said springv plank being cut away forwardly of said side flanges.
3. In a truck, a side frame including comv l pression and tension members and a pair of upright columns, said tension member having laterally extending flanges forming an extended support, reinforcing 4corner ribsl formed between the outerl margins of said flanges and said upright columns, a spring plank resting on'said support between said corner ribs, said spring plank having laterally projecting portions between said columns adapted to accommodate a plurality of coil springs, and upright flanges formed along the `opposite sides of said spring plank, said flanges being of reduced height along the sides of said widened portions of said spring plank and terminating immediately in front of said widened portions to permit the adjacent springs to be withdrawn forwardly therefrom.
