It will be understood that the present invention may be applied in any form of refrigerating apparatus, but thus far the invention has found valuable application as a storage drawer for a counter which has an upper glassed-in refrigerating inspection compartment, and lower compartments, and drawers therein, for maintaining a surplus STORAGE DRAWER FOR REFBIGEBATING APPARATUS 1980. Numeral 1 generally indicates the walls of the refrigerating structure and 2 the refrigeration c amber proper. The df'awer is generally indicated at 3, and is composed of sheet metal. is provided with a pull of the recessed type, generally indicated at 5'. The drawer opening of the refrigerating chamber is indicated at 6. This opening is lined with upper and lower elements 7 and 8, whichprovide door jambs 9. Liner elements 1213 fit between the elements 7 and 8 to complete the lining or frame for the opening 6. The outer surfaces or edges of the elements 7, 8 and 13 also form a jamb for the flan e 11 of the door. Any suitable means may e provided for obtaining a sealed relation between the door and the opening leading to the refrigerating compartment.
The chamber 2 is provided with a suitable metal lining 16 here shown only at the bottom. Crosswise of the chamber is arranged an angle iron 17, one flange of which engages the bottom of the chamber 2 and the other flange of which engages the inner surface of the jamb-forming element 8. The inner vertical surface of the element 12 has attached thereto by suitable fastening devices,

The rear surface of the lower jamb-forming element 8 has attached thereto by suitable devices a horizontally arranged gasket 21, and this gasket passes beneath and sealingly contacts the gasket 20 as at 23, see Figure 3. The two gasket elements thus far described are permanently attached. A third gasket is vertically ar ranged and detachably secured in the following manner: The gasket 25, see Figure 4, has a pbrtion 26 clamped between two plates respectively indicated at 2728, the parts being secured. by suitable fastening devices indicated at 30, see Figure 3. The plate 26 is attached by screws 31 to the refrigerator wall, as best shown in Figure 4. The gasket 25 has its lower end in sealing engagement with the horizontal gasket 21. N0 gasket has been shown at the upper side of the opening, because no great refrigerating The front wall 4 of the drawer losses occur at that level. The gaskets 25 and track flanges 44 tend to prevent lateral motion of the drawer, but additional rollers 55 are provided adjacent the opening to engage opposite sides of the drawer and substantially eliminate binding action, and prevent lateral motion. This means is later referred to.
Features of the invention relate to the plate or roller mount and to the manner. of attach ing the plate 39 to the back of the drawer, the latter feature having to do with assembly. The drawer is mounted on, and is held in operative positions, by rollers, one set of rollers being arranged to secure the drawer against horizontal motion in a direction perpendicular to direction of withdrawal. Two of the rollers, by which the drawer is supported, are carried by the drawer, and
two are mounted upon the bottom flange of the angle iron 17. The drawer-supporting rollers which are carried by the drawer act as stops and engage with the vertical flange of the iron 17 to limit total withdrawal of the drawer. The mounting arrangement of the rollers separately and in combination,-are features of the invention. Rollers are journaled on a shaft 36, secured in a rolled portion 37 of the horizontal portion 38- of an attachment or mount plate, generally indicated 39. The face of this plate is flatly engaged with the rear face of the drawer as best shown in Figure 1. The plate extends above the top of the drawer and has a turned portion 40 securing a shaft 41. At opposite ends of this shaft are rollers 42 engaging with guide-tracks 43, secured to the top or adjacent the top of the chamber 2, said tracks having flanges 44 to prevent lateral motion of the rollers, see Figures 1 and 3. It will be noted that the rollers 35 are located at points forwardly of the back of the drawer, and that the rollers 42 are arranged substantially at the back of the drawer and above rollers 35. The rollers may be viewed as arranged at the extremities of the perpendicularly related sides of a right triangle, the hypotenuse of which faces in direction of withdrawal of the drawer. If shaft 36 .is considered a fulcrum point, it will be seen that downward motion of the forward end of the drawer is prevented, because of the engagement of the rollers 42 with the track. In Figure 2, the rollers 35 are shown engaged with the verti cal flange of the angle iron 17 to limit withdrawal of the drawer. The bottom and sides of the drawer are maintained in frictional engagement with the gaskets 20,21 and 25, which frictional engagement substantially prevents any motion-of the drawer (particularly when loaded) which would tend to move the rollers 35 rearwardly or inwardly from their position shown in Figure 2.
The opposite vertical edges of the plate 39 have flan es 39' which engage opposite side walls of the drawer to form a kind of socket to receive the end of the drawer.
'- In assembling, the frame 39 is introduced v part way so that it lies adjacent the chamber opening, see Figure 2. The fastening devices 45 are carried by the plate, and secured agai nst translating motion, and after the plate is introduced the drawer is introduced and manipulated so that these fasten- 1ng devices pass through openings 46 in the back wall of the drawer. The thumb nuts 47 are then engaged with the threads of the fastening devices 45 and tightened. The gasket 25 is then applied so that the vertical sides of the drawer sealingly engage the gaskets 20 and 25.
The forward end of the drawer, see Figure 1, rests upon rollers 50, which rollers are mounted upon a shaft '51 rotative in bearings 52 carried by the angle iron 17.
It w1ll be noted (see Figure 3) thatthe bearings 52 are spaced from the vertical wall of the chamber so that the rollers 35 may pass between the bearings and the wall of the chamber, as shown in Figure 2.
In order to prevent substantial horizontal motion of the drawer in direction perpendicular to the direction of withdrawal, one vertical wall of the chamber is provided with a roller 55. This roller is placed above the level of the top of the rollers 35, and adjacent the opening of the chamber, as best shown in Figures 1 and 3. Referring to Figure 4: A second roller is mounted on a suitable support 56 attached to the front wall of the case and engages the other lateral wall of the drawer. The rollers and 57 lie in the same horizontal plane, and act to prevent lateral motion of the drawer adjacent the opening, in the manner above referred to. Lateral motion at the rear is prevented by the flanges 44 of the tracks 43. The drawer is thus provided with roller supports which make it easy of withdrawal, and with guides which substantially prevent lateral motions in direction perpendicular to line of withdrawal. I claim as my invention". 1. In combination with a structure providing a chamber having a drawer opening, a drawer arranged within the chamber and movable within the opening, rollers carried by the draw-er and arranged adjacent the inner end of the drawer to support it, and additional rollers arranged rearwardly of III Ill
and above said first mentioned rollers and v adapted to co-act with the chamber to resist rocking motion of the drawer about said first mentioned rollers and downward motion of the forward portion of the drawer for any withdrawal position, said rollers being arranged on a single mount, and means detachably securing the mount to the rear face of the rear wall of the drawer, said means being accessible from within the drawer.
2. In combination with a structure providing a chamber having a drawer opening, a drawer arranged within the chamber and movable within the opening, rollers carried by and arranged. adjacent the inner end of the drawer to support it, and additional rollers carried by the drawer and arranged rearwardly of and above said first mentioned rollers and adapted to co-act with the chamber to resist rocking motion about said first mentioned roller and downward motion of the forward portion of the drawer for an withdrawal position, said last mentioned rol ers lying substantially in a vertical plane lying in the rear wall of the drawer.
3. In combination with a structure providing a chamber having a drawer opening, a drawer arranged within the chamber and movable in the opening, a plate detachably secured to the rear of the drawer and having rollers supporting the drawer at a point between its front and rear walls, and further having rollers engaged with the chamber wall at a point rearwardly of and above said first mentioned roller to prevent downward tipping of the forward portion of the drawer for all withdrawal positions.
4. In combination with a structure providing a refrigeration chamber having a drawer opening, sealing means arranged at the opening including elements which project inwardly beyond the sides of the opening, a drawer adapted when arranged in the chamber to have its sides frictionally and sealingly engaged with corresponding portions of the sealing means, rollers carried by the drawer and arranged adjacent the inner end to support it, and additional rollers carried by the drawer and arranged rearwardly of the above and the first mentioned rollers and adapted to cooperate with the chamber I wall and with the first rollers to prevent rocking motion of the drawer in a vertical plane and therefore to substantially avoid breaking of the frictional seal between the sealing means and the drawer for all positions of the drawer.
5. In combination with a structure providing a refrigeration chamber havin a drawer opening, sealing means arrange at the opening including elements which project inwardly beyond the sides of the opening, a drawer adapted when arranged in the chamber to have its sides frictionally and sealingly engaged with correspondin portions of the sealing means, rollers carried by the drawer and arranged adjacent the inner end to support it, and additional rollers carried by the drawer and arranged rearwardly of and above the first mentioned rollers and adapted to cooperate with the chamber wall and with the first rollers to prevent rockin motion of the drawer in a vertical plane and therefore to substantially avoid breaking of the frictional seal between the sealing means and the drawer for all positions of the drawer, and rollers arranged adjacent the sealing means to prevent lateral motions of the drawer. i
6. In combination with a structure providing a refrigeration chamber having a drawer openin sealing means arranged at the opening inc uding detachable elements which project inwardly beyond the sides of the 0 ening, a drawer adapted when arran e m the chamber to have its sides and ottom frietionally and sealingly engaged with corresponding portions of the sealing means. rollers carried by the drawer and arranged adjacent the inner end to support it and additional rollers carried by the drawer and arranged rearwardly of and above the firstmentioned rollers and adapted to cooperate with the chamber wall and with the first rollers to prevent rocking motion of the drawer in a vertical plane and therefore to substantially avoid breaking of he frictional seal between the sealin means and the drawer for all positions 0 the drawer and rollers arranged adjacent the sealing means to prevent lateral motions of the drawer.
7. In combination with a structure providing a chamber, a drawer in the chamber, a support at the back of the drawer, drawer supporting and/or anti-tipping means carried by the su port, and means for detachablysecuring t lie support to the drawer and accessible from within the drawer for detachment, said support havin an extension which engages the bottom of the drawer and to which the drawer-supporting means is attached.
8. In combination with a structure roviding a chamber, a drawer in the cham er, a plate at the rear of the drawer having rollers thereon for supporting and preventing tipping of the drawer, and means detachably securing the plate to the drawer, said means being accessible from within the drawer, said plate being bent to provide an extension WhlCh engages the bottom of the drawer and to which the drawer-supporting rollers are attached.
