Our invention relates to improvements in automobile sanding devices, and the object of the invention is to construct a device which will permit sand being sprinkled upon the road immediately in front of the rear wheels of the vehicle to prevent skidding thereof. With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description proceeds, our invention consists of a sanding device constructed and arranged all' as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying the gates 5 of each valve have levers 6 which.

A sand container 1 is preferably located immediately behind the front seat of the vehicle and referably has on its interior a double inclined deflector 2 for deflecting the sandtoward the outlet orifices 3 which are located in the bottom of the container 1 in the vicinity of its ends. located immediately below the orifices 3, and

The free ends of thelevers 6 are connected by rods 8 with depending levers 9 mounted on a cross shaft 10 journalled to the floor boards of the car or otherwise suitably mounted in similar manner on the chassis frame.
A third lever 11 also depends from the cross shaft 10, and this lever 11 is connected by a rod 12 with a swingable control lever 13 within reach of the driver of the vehicle.

A forearm l6 depends from the cross shaft 10 to which it is secured and the free end of said arm 16 is connected b a flexible connection 17 with a lower en 18 of a vertically movable plunger 19 within reach of the driver of the car, said plunger being preferably vertically movable in the tube 18 which may be secured so as to protrude down through the footboard of the car. The plunger 19 is provided with a spring 21 by means of which it is held in its uppermost position. Tlfe lower end 18 of the plunger 19 is hinged to the main portion of the plunger 19 and when in its uppermost position, as illustrated in Figure 2, such hin e extendsinto the tube 20 so as to make t e plunger rigid. A spring catch 22 is provided for holding the plunger 19 in its lowermost position. v
23 is a rod connected at its forward end to the foot brake 24 and slidably mounted intermediatel of its length in the bracket 25, said rod 23 aving a slot 26 extending therethrough and adapted to receive the lower end 18 of the plunger 19.
Springs 27 are provided for holding the gate valves 5 in their normal closed position, said sprin s 27 being preferably con- T nected at their orward ends to the levers 6 and at their rear ends to any suitable part applied it is only necessary for the driver of thecar to depress the plunger 19 so that the catch 22 holds it in its lowermost position when the lower end 18 of such plunger 19 will enter the slot 26 in the rod 23, and when the foot brake 24 is applied it will swing the lower end 18 of the plunger 19 forwardly, thus pulling on the flexible connection 17 to the arm 16 and turning the cross shaft 10, with the result that the levers 9 will be swung forwardly and through the medium of the connections or rods 8 the levers 6 will be swung in a like direction and the gate valves 5 opened, thus discharging sand through the pipes 14 onto the road in front of the rear wheels of the vehicle.
Where it is desired to apply the sand independently of the application of the foot brake the plunger 19 is not depressed but is in the position illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing wherein there is no connection between its lower end and the rod 23. Therefore the sand is applied by actuating the lever 13 by pulling it back, thus swinging forwardly the lever 11 and turning the shaft 10 which will swing the levers 9 forwardly and thus open the gate valves 5 as above described.
From the above description it will be ap parent that we have devised a simple and effective sanding device which will prevent the automobiles skidding and one in which the sand can .be applied automatically upon the application of the brake, as well as independently thereof.
What we claim as our invention is:
In an automobile sanding device in combination a brake pedal, a sand container having outlet orifices in the vicinity of its ends, a. sand controlling valve below each orifice, a pipe leading from each sand controlling valve into proximity with each rear wheel of the vehicle and in front thereof, a sand valve operating lever within reach of the driver of the vehicle for independent operation of the sand valves, connections between the operating lever and the sand valves, an orificed slide rod extending rearwardly from the brake pedal, a plunger having a hinged portion, said plunger normally spring held in the inoperative position, a flexible connection between the hinged portion of the plunger and the connections between the sand valve operating lever and the sand valves, said flexible connection establishing a connection between the brake pedal and the sand valves when the plunger is depressed into the orifice in the slide rod for automatically operating the sand valves upon the application of the brake.
