Fig. 3 is a fragmentarysection taken on;-
an axial line of a portion'of an assembled hub cap and hub, showing the method of latching employed.
Flg. 4 is a modification, it being anillusr' tration of the manner in which the invention is applied to tank filler caps.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a hub cap and 2 the integrally formed skirt thereo In Fig. 3 the cap is shown in place in the hub 3 of a wheel, the means for latching the cap in place being a plurality of formed tongues 4 which are integral parts of the skirt 2. To form these tongues, the metal of the skirt is cut away or eliminated at suitable intervals to provide elongated openings, that portion of the, skirt between each opening and the free edge of the skirt forming a bar 2', with a tongue 4 projecting from the inner edge thereof across the opening.
- In forming the tongue, attention is given to the thickness of the material in the hub, as it is desired that the cap shall remain in place firmly and not be a source of noise.
Therefore, referring to the character 8 as f being the base of the tongue, in Fig. 3, it is seen that an upward bend, to provide a hump 9, is given the tongue, while the'end 7 is given a downward bend at the proper distance from the annular flange 10 of the cap. The radial distance to the extremities of the humps is somewhat less than the diameter of the bore of the inturned flange 12 of the hub, so that in forcing the cap to its place, each of the tongues must be sprung inwardly sufiiciently to pass the edges of the flange 12, while the slope of the portions 1930. of the tongues between the end 7 and the hump 9 is such as to preclude anylloosening during operation.
During the act of inserting the cap: in place, the metal in the bars'2',

a closure for said member comprising an annular skirt thereon adapted to fit into said flange, said skirt at a plurality of places being cut away to form at each place an elongated open space bounded by a weakened bar at the free edge of the skirt, and a spring tongue integrally formed with an intermediate portion of said bar and projecting across the open space, said open space being of larger area than the tongue so as to extend beyond the sidesfthereof, each ton e being provided with a hum to yielda 1y engage said flange when sai closure is inserted.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of June, 1930. EDWARD H. WITTENBERG.
