PAT ENT OFFICE DUANE B. REAL, OF DAYTON,'OHIO, ASSI GNOB '1'0 FBIGIDAIBE CORPOBATION, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF DELAWABE BEFRIGERATING APPABATUS i This invention relates to refrigerating apparatus and es ecially to the condenser andits relation to t e other refrigerating apparatus. An object ofthe invention is to provide an eflicient condenser.
Another object of the invention is to provide eflicient cooling means for the refrigerant. a Further obj ects and advantages of the presentinvention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wheren a preferred form of the present invention is clearly shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a cross-section through the lower part of a refrigerator cabinet;
Fig. 2 is a frontvview of the compressor,
condenser and fan of Fi 1; y
Fig. 3 is a. top elevaton of the condenser disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
t has heretofore been the practice' generally to design a very high speed fan for cooling the condenser and compressor of refrigerating apparatus. It was thought necessary to provide a very powerful draft of air in order to efliciently cool the refrigerant.
' This invention contemplates designing and placing the condenser so that the cooling currents may be efliciently utilized in cooling the condenser and compressor. The utilization of such cooling eflicency will result not only in replacing a large bulky condenser with a smaller one but will also allow a slow speed,
. more quiet fan to be used in cooling the condenser and compressor. In Fig. 1 is disclosed a cross-section through the bottom of the cabinet 10 with its framework 11, outer side'panels 12 and 13, inner side ' panels 14 and 15, a front panel 16 and a ,lower door composed of the outer panel 17 inner panel 18 and frame members 19. Across the bottom of the cabinet are the base frame mem- 20, resiliently supporting a platform 21 on whichds preferably located the compres- '1925. Conduit 28 returns the refrigerant to sor 22 having the pipe or cond'uit 23 connected to the condenser 24 which will 'be more particularly described hereafter. A pipe 25 leads to the receiver 26. From the receiver a controlled type such as disclosed in the patent; i I
to R. G. Osborn 1,556,70 8, issued October 13;
the compressor. The motor429 runs the com pressor through the medium of the moto pulley 30, belt 31 and compressor pulley 3 on the compressor shaft 34. As disclosed i Fig. 2 the compressor pulley preferably has fan blades 33 either integrally therewith or attached thereto for providing a cooling draft of air over the compressor and condenser. A fan 35 may be provided on the motor so that the cooling draft of air after passing over the condenser and compressor will be drawn back over the motor.
As disclosed in Figs. 3, 4and 5 the condenser has a coupling member 36 connected at one of its ends. `This .coupling member has a passageway 37 leading to the entrance of two tubes or conduits 38 and 39 connected to the passageway 37. Fins 40 preferably surround these two tubes. Both the inner tube 39 and the outer 'tube 38 form a horizontal U-shaped section having the two arms 41 and 43 and the base 42 of'the U. At one end of the top of the U=these two tubes are bent downward at 44 to form the next layer similarly U-shaped of the condenser. Any number of these U-shaped horizontal sections or layers may be formed. For the apparatus disclosed, however, it is preferably at .the point 45 to drop the tubes a considerable space to avoid the shaft 34 of the compressor and fan. Supports 46 of any convenient form may be provided for the condenser. A cou`- pling member 47 similar to the coupling memthe condenser has a plane portion directly in the path of the breeze from the fan and that as this fan breeze passes through the condenser part of itwill strikethe compressor and from the compressor it will be reflected ofl to other portions of the condenser. That portion of the breeze which does not strike the compressor will continue to cool the other portions of the condenser. The apparatus is thus designed that the condenser has portions continually in the path of the breeze from the fan. It will be noted that the fins on the condenser will aid in directing the breeze through the front portion of the condenser' due to the fact that the plane of the fins is at right angles to the plane of the fan. After the breeze strikes the compressor and is deflected off the fins on the sides 41 or 43 being substantially parallel to the plane ofthe fan will aid in catching the deflected currents of air and conducting them across the tubes 39 and 38. The design of the condenser so eiiiciently utilizes the Currents that a small condenser of this type can be used in place of the large bulky condenser of the priorart. Furthermore as the Currents of air are efliciently utilized it will not be necessary to provide a high speed fan; A low speed fan is more quiet in operation than a high speed fan of the same' form is apt to be. The two tubes or conduits 38 and 39 are preferably connected in parallel from the coupling 36 to the coupling 47.
It is not desired to limit the invention to the specific form and arrangement of the apparatus as disclosed. For instance' the number and arrangement of U-shaped sections may be varied. Furthermore the fan 33 may not be formed integrally with the compressor pulley, but may be separate therefrom. Likewise the clearance at the point .45 for'the compressor shaft 34 may be varied. By U-shaped is meant an elementhaving' two portions at an angle or curvature to a third portion. The length of each portion and its angle or curvatre to the other portions is a matter of choice. It is not intending on opposite sides of the compressor.
3. A refrigerating apparatus comprising in combination, a compressor, a motor for operating said compressor, a fan carried by one of said elements, a substantially U-shaped condenser having a portion disposed on the same side of said element'as said fan and extending in a plane parallel to said fan, the other portions of said condenser being disposed in a plane transverse to said first mentionedportion and extending along the sides of said fan carrying element so as to be in the path of air moved by said'fan.
4. A refrige-rating apparatus comprising in combination, a 'compressor, a motor for Operating said compressor, a fan carried by one of said elements, a substantially U-shaped condenser having a portion disposed between the fan and said element and extending in a plane 'parallel to said fan, the other portions of said condenser being disposed in a plane transverse to said first mentioned portion and extending along the sides of said fan carrying element so as to be in the path of air moved by said fan.
5. A refrigerating apparatus comprising in combination, a compressor, a motor for Operating said compressor, a fan carried by the compressor, a substantially U-shaped condenser having a portion disposed on the same side of said compressor as said fan and extending in a plane parallel to said fan, the other portions of said condenser being disposed in a plane transverse to said first mentioned portion and extending along the sides 'of said compressor so as to be in the path of air moved by said fan.
6. In refrigerating apparatus, a compressor, a fan spaced from said compressor, a. substantially U-shaped condenser having one portion of the U located between said fan and said compressor.
