Description

Nov. 8, 1932. G. SCAGLIA IM ACT IGNITION DEVICE AND BOMB OR THE LIKE Filed May 2, 1932 iii ?atented Nov. 8, 1932 GBEGOBIO SCAGLIA, OF TUBIN, ITALY, ASSIGNOE TO SOCIETA ITALIANA ERNESTO IBBEDA PER COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHE, F MILAN, ITALY IMPACT IGNITION DEVICE AND BOMB OR THE LIKE Application filed May 2, 1982, Serial No.
of the whole of said member within said jacket, said parts carrying cooperating striker and primer which are brought into operation to fire the charge on the impact on an obstacle and consequent movement of said parts with respect to each other.
The present invention relates to the organization of said floating member and of parts intended to drive the striker and the primer against each other at the time of impact on an obstacle.
The device of this invention may be embodied in explosive devices of any kind, as projectiles, bombs and the like and it is hereinafter described in connection with a bomb intended to be thrown by hand or by a bomb thrower.
On the annexed drawing a construction of this invention is shown by way of example, in central longitudinal section.
In the illustrated embodiment the device of this invention comprises a jacket consisting of two sections 1 and 2 interconnected by cooperating screwthreaded portions 1" and 2" and providing concave surfaces 1' and 2' at their inwardly facing ends.
Within said jacket 1, 2 is located a floating member which comprises an elongated body 3 and an enlarged head 12 mounted to telescope axially of said body.
In the illustrated embodiment said body consists of a casing which contains an exlosive charge 4 and a bottom weight 5 and t provides a central bore 6 in which extends a concentric tube 7 containing a detonator 8-8' anda primer 9.
A perforated tube 10 connected with head 12 extends in the annular space thus provided in the casing 3 and the end of said tube bears on a spring 11 which loosely encircles the tube 7 and abuts on the wall'confining the bottom of the annular space within bore 6 of body 3.
The top end of tube 10 has an enlarged and rounded head 12 fast thereon, which .is
608,821, and in Germany may 18, 1981.
located in section 2 of the bomb jacket. The head 12 provides a seat 13 concentric with tube 10 in which is located a plunger 14 having the striker 15 fast therein and a spring 16 is located intermediate plunger 14 and the bottom of seat 13.
The top end of plunger 14 provides a curve surface 14 which is forced by spring 16 against the internal surface 17' of a heavy cup member 17 whose fiat surface 17" abuts freely on the head 12 while its outer surface 17" engages the internal surface of the concave end of jacket section 2'.
Said cup member 17 consists with advantage of two sheet metal sections suitably shaped and engaged with each other to provide a space which is filled with a heavy material as lead, to impact a proper weight to said cup.
The radius of the internal surface 17 of cup 17 is materially larger than that of the head of plunger 14 entering it, but is shorter than the radius of outer surface of said cup.
The safety device for the described ignition device consists of a transverse channel member 18 extending through perforations of jacket section 2 and tube 10 intermediate the primer 9 and striker 15; the outer end of-said transverse member 18 is articulated by a hook 19 with an outer cap 20 which is p0- 'sitioned on jacket section 2 and is locked being 'eld in such position by springs 11 and 1 16. Spring 11 holds the end of body 3 in contact with end 1 of jacket section 1 and tube 10 withdrawn from body 3 with. the striker 15 spaced from primer 9 and the top surface 17" of cup 17 in contact with concave portion 1' of jacket section 1; on the .other hand, spring 16 holds the striker 15 with the plunger 14 forced on the internal surface 17' of cup 17.
On impact, if the bomb strikes the obstacle by end portion 1 of its jacket, the cup 17 moves down by its momentum and causes head 12 and plunger 14 with strikerfiring pin 15 to move down said striker thus striking the primer 9 to ignite detonator 8 and main explosive charge 4. I
Should impact take place at end 2 the body 3 with charge 4 and primer 9 are driven towards striker 15.
Finally, when the impact takes place along a line transverse to the bomb axis (that is to axis of tube 10), the internal member comprising the body 3 and head 12 telescoping within the tube 10 is caused to float around the rim 13 of head 12 which bears on the internal surface of jacket section 2; 2. In this floating motion the body 3 is caused by its end sliding on concave bottom 1 of jacket 1 to telescope along tube 10 and drive the primer 9 towards striker 15, this latter being supported by plunger 14 which rests against effect a floating the striker -15 fast on said cup 17 and therefore against jacket end 2.
At the same time also cup 17 is caused to motion or to move trans versely to axis of jacket 1, 2, and owing to concave shape of jacket end portion 2 and of surface 17 of cup 17'which engages the plunger'14 said cup 17 cooperates to drive plunger against the primer 9.
In the described constructipn the motion of the floating member has at any time the character of an oscillation around a centre lying at its lighter head that is on rim 13 and therefore the movements of the same are always well defined. D
Further in the event of an impact on a line transverse to the bomb a is, the striker 15 is moved towards the tion of cup 17 on concavebottom 2' of the jacket and of the striker-carrying plunger 14 on the internal concave surface of said cup 17.
f course the present invention may he embodied in a number of constructions lying within the spirit of appended claims; by way of example the location of striker and primer may be reversed and the explosive chargemay be separate from the body 3 or equivalent member of the device.
