As the sheets are carried forwardly by the felts they are subjected to the action of the squeeze rolls to free them of water in so far as is possible and finally they are delivered onto the apron of the drying apparatus. In order that the sheets will be carried by the upper felt across the gap between the lower felt and apron they are suctionally pulled against the upper felt b the suction box 84.
The drum formed by separate platens each of which is capable of forming separate sheets facilitates the production of separate and unjoined sheets. All edges of each of the sheets are of tapering thickness and more or less uneven to give the deckle effect desired and by continuous rotation of the drum the successive sheets are formed and delivered one after the other-to the continuously moving felts. In this way it is possible to obtain the production equal to that of continuous web making apparatus, while the sheets produced are equal to those made by the prior art hand method.
Various changes may be made in the form of the apparatus without departing from the s irit and scope of the invention and there ore we prefer to be limited by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description.
What we claim is:
1. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a drum having separate platens carried by a central rotatable hub, the said hub and platens having intercommunicating passage ways and a flange non-rotatable relative to said hub having a chamber. with which the passageways of the hub may register.
2. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a drum having separate platens removably carried by a central rotatable hub, a flange nonrotatable at one end of said hub provided with a chamber open at a side adjacent said hub, the said hub and platens having intercommunicating passageways which may register with said chamber as the hub rotates.
3. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a
central rotatable hub, a plurality of hollow platens dis osed radially of said hub havin curved sur aces which form the periphery o a drum, the surfaces comprising paper making screen cloth.
4. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a drum including separate platens having curved surfaces which are concentric with respect to the axis of rotation of the drum, an endless lower felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lower run thereof contacts with the curved surfaces of the platens as they are rotated by the hub, an endless upper felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lower run thereof co-operates with the upper run of the lower felt for receiving sheets from the platens therebetween.
8. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a drum including separate platens havin. curved surfaces which are concentric wit respect to the axis of rotation of the drum,
van endless lower felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lowerrrunthereof contacts with the curved surfaces of the platens as they are rotated by the hub, an endless upper felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lower run thereof co-operates with the upper run of the lower felt for receiving sheets from the laten therebetween and a suction box over t 1e lower run of the lower felt disposed to act on sheets on the platens to draw them towards said lower felt.

In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprisingy-a -drum including separate sheet forming platens, a lower endless felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that its lower run contacts with outer paper forming surfaces of said platens, an upper endless felt supported by a plurality of rolls with its lower run in contact with the upper run of said lower felt and extending beyond the said lower run, a third felt below the lower run of the upper felt and adjacent the lower felt and a suction box over the lower run of the upper felt extendingibeyond adjacent ends of said lower and third felt.
10. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of'deckle edge paper comprising, a
drum including separate platens having concentrically disposed sheet forming surfaces, a suction box above said drum having a suction side conforming to the contour of the surfaces of the platens, a lower endless felt 1 sheets rotatable supported by a plurality of rolls having its lower run extending between said suction box and said drum, an upper endless felt supported by a plurality of rolls having its lower run in contact with the upper run of the lower felt and at a point away from said drum extendin beyond the upper run of the lower'felt, a drier felt having a receiving end disposed below the extending part of the upper felt and adjacent the lower felt and a suction box above the lower run of the upper felt overlapping adjacent portions of the",
lower and drier felt.
11. In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a platen havingan open upper side, a paper forming surface thereover including a plurality of superposed members having openin of different areas therethrough.
12. 11 an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a platen having end and side walls, a perforated plate removably afiixed to the upper sides of the walls and a plurality of superposed'screen cloth members of different mesh over the perforations of said plate.

In an apparatus-for making separate of deckle edge paper comprising, a rotatable drum having separate platens provided with paper forming peripheral surfaces, a roll thereabove, a felt movable between said roll and surfaces,.the said roll being hollow and having a perforated wall and a suction box having a perforated side 7 against said belt adjacent said roll.

In an apparatus for making separate sheets of deckle edge paper comprising, a drum having separate platens provided with paper making surfaces, a suction roll thereabove, a felt movable between said roll and surfaces of said platens, and a suction box adjacent said roll having a perforated face disposed above said felt.

In paper making apparatus comprising in combination, a drum including separate platens having perforated paper forming surfaces and means associated with the surface of at least one platen closing the perforations of the surface thereof along an irregular strip to form separate paper forming surfaces.

In apparatus for making paper, comprising in combination, a rotatable drum including a plurality of separate platens each having curved paper making surfaces and an endless lower felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lower run contacts with the curved surfaces of the platens, one of said rolls being located at a side of said drum for guiding said felt into contact with said drum.

In apparatus for making paper comprising in combination, a rotatable drum including a plurality of separate platens each having curved aper making surfaces and an endless lower felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lower run contacts with the curved surfaces of the platens, one of said rolls being located at a side of said drum for guiding said felt into contact with said drum, and a nozzle adjacent the drum for directing a fluid onto the surface of said drum.

In an apparatus for making paper comprising in combination, a rotatable drum including separate platens having curved surfaces, upper and lower endless felts supported by rolls so that a lower run of the lower felt contacts with the surfaces of the platens and the upper and lower runs of the lower and upper felts are superposed to receive therebetween sheets from said platens and a pair of press rolls acting on said superposed runs.

In apparatus for making paper comprising in combination, a rotatable drum including separate paper forming platens, an endless felt supported by rolls so that a part thereof contacts with the surface of said platens and a run thereof extends away from said drum, a part of another felt adjacent the end of said run and a suction box above said end of the run and said part of said other felt.

In apparatus for making paper comprising in combination, a rotatable drum having paper making surfaces, :1 lower endless felt supported by a plurality of rolls so that a lower run thereof contac s with the surface of the drum,.an upper'endless felt supported by a plurality of rolls with its lower run in contact with the upper run 'ofthe lower felt, a part of a third felt adjacent the upper run of the lower felt and a suction box above adjacent portions of said lower felt and said part of the third felt.
21. In apparatus for making paper comprising in combination, a rotatable drum including a plurality of separate platens each having curved paper making surfaces and an endless felt supported that a lower run thereof contacts with the curved surfaces of the platens, and another felt having a portion disposed in superposed relation on the first-named felt whereby paper formed on the platen will be received by and between the superposed portion of the felt.
