Description
Nov. l, 1932. N. POND APPARATUS FOR ROLLING GLASS SHEETS Filed May 23, V1951 INVENToR.
*ql @a L M A TTORNEYS.
IIIII SYM Patented Nov. 1, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LEANDER N. POND, OF KINGSPORT, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR T0 BLUE RIDGE GLASS (IOR- PORATION, OF KINGSPORT, TEN NESSEE APPARATUS FOR ROLLING GLASS SHEETS Application led May 23,
heating of the roll by glass initially contacting therewith. As shown in that application, the initial distortion is due to the natural heating of a stationary roll by the accunulation of steam at the upper portion thereo According to' the present invention I provide for chilling the lower portion of the roll by directing a jet of water thereon, such being in addition to the cooling liquid generally employed with sheet forming rolls.
For these purposes my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and oombination of the several parts of which it is composed, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.-
Referring to the accompanying drawing, in which corresponding parts are designated by corresponding marks of reference,-
F1g..1 is a vertical section through a sheet i forming pass having my invention applied ofthe roll A.
thereto Fig, 2 is a lateral view of a roll embodying the invention and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the roll shown in Fig; 2.
The structure shown in Fig. 1 is generally of the type illustrated in my aforesaid prior ap lication and embodies an upper forming rolll) A, a lower forming roll B wlth a form-.- ing ass C between them, and a table D on whic glass may be deposited. An indicator K may be provided to show the warpage Contained within the upper roll A. is a water induction-pipe E having its end Vdirected'to one side. This pipe extends 'from approximately the medial p ane of the roll through one end of the roll and has a swivel Vconnection F with a supply G of warping water, the construction bein such that the pi turns with the roll. addition, the roe is provided with means for circulating lthe rotation .of the roll for locally 1981. Serial No. 539,589.
water for general cooling through the hollow interior thereof, this beingaccomplished by thev water induction-pipe H and the water eduction-pipe J.
With this device one side of the roll will be cooled lby the water directed thereon from the pipe E, causing a distortion of the roll. When the desired degree of distortion is obtained, the pouring is timed so that the cold portion of the roll will be the irst portion of the roll tok contact with the glass delivered to themachine.
In carrying out my invention the amount A and temperature of the general cooling wa-.
ter, the casting s eed, the temperature of the glass, and the vo be so adjusted that the pre-warpage obtained is compensated for by the heat brought in during the casting operation.
If desired, the pipe E may not rotate with the roll but in lieu thereof may be xed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow forming roll, means for producing a general circulation of water through the roll, and su plemental mms for locally chilling one side of the ro 2. In a device ofthe character described the combination witha continuously rotating hollow forming roll, means for producing a general circulation of water through the roll and supplemental means fixed in relation to chilling one side of the roll.'
