Patented, Nov. 1, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOUIS LEKFANT, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOB TO CARTIER, BOCIETE ANONYEE, OF PARIS, FRANCE, A COMPANY OF FRANCE MULTIPLE ASH TRAY OOMPOBED OF NEHTED nnmms Application filed June 12, 1030, Serial No. 480,711, and in France June 17, 1929.
The present invention has for its object a multiple ash tray, consisting of several elements which can be assembled so as to form a whole having the external appearance of a an elegant box, when they are not bein used, or can on the contrary be separated or use and then form as many distinct ash trays.
For this purpose different elements are provided on their periphery with notches o and teeth, fitting into one another for the assembling, the teeth of said elements preferably having the shape of an L, so that the assemblin is effected by giving to the elements a sight angular displacement, in or- .o der that the teeth of one element may fit into the notches of the next one. In an embodiment of the invention. the lid of the ash tray is provided with a dial with its clockwork, so as to constitute a combined ash tray and clock.
A referred embodiment of the invention will e described with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows the multiple ash tray, with its elements assembled, the lid element being not shown.
Fig. 2 shows the different elements of the ash tray separated.
Fig. 3 shows a combined ash tray and 2? clock.
Each of the elements a is provided on its periphery with notches b alternating with projections or teeth a. For the assembling, the elements are superposed, the teeth of each element engaging into the notches of the element located under it and its notches receiying the teeth of the element located over it. An element (1, forming the lid of the box constituted by the assembled elements, is pro vided only with teeth engaging into the notches of the element located under it, and another element, forming the bottom e, comprises only notches.
- The teeth of the elements other than the bottom and the lid are preferably given the shape of an L, as shown in the drawings.
. In this way, it is necessary to angularly displace two elements relatively to each other .20 in order to assemble them, andfurther more,
the lines of assembling give to the whole an ele ant and modern design.
t must be understood that the embodiment that has been described, has been given merely b way of example, and that it could so be mod' ed in its details without departing from the principle of the invention.
In the drawings, the elements have been supposed circular in shape, but'they could obviously be given any other shape, square, rectangular, or the like.
The ash tray can be made of'any suitable material, precious or non precious metals, galalith, wood, and so on, and be decorated in any suitable way.
The teeth can be either integralwith the body of the element, or added, and in the latter case they can be madeof a difl'erent material or metal.
Fi 3 shows a combined ash tray and clock in w ich the watchcase and its dial are inserted in a housing provided in the lid. It is obvious that any other disposition could be adopted; for instance the watchcase could be mounted on the lid in a fixed manner or 7 with an adjustable inclination, either in a housing of the lid, or on the upper face of said lid, and it would then be kept in sition by means. of any securing device. Las of all, instead of a dial, any other article could be provided on the lid, such as a jewel, a looking glgss, a cigaret holder, a match case, and the What I claim is:
1. A multiple ash tray comprising a 111- rality of cup-shaped elements adapte to serve as independent ash trays and provided with notches, and projections on said elements adapted to fit into. the notches of the adjacent element so as-to keep said elements spaced apart from one another, whereby the different elements can be assembled, so as to form a whole when not in use.
2. A multiple ash traycomprising a lurality of cup-shaped elements adapte to serve as independent ash trays and provided with notches, and L-shaped projections on said elements adapted to fit into the notches of the adjacent'element so as to keep said elements spaced apart from one another,
whereb the difierent elements can be assembl so as to form a whole, when not in use.
3. A multiple ash tray comprisinga plu- 5. rality of cup shaped elements adapted to serve as independent ash trays and provided 1 with notches, and L-shaped projections on I" .said elements adapted to fit into the notches I of the adjacent element so as to keep said elements spaced apart from one another,
whereby the different elements can be as- .sembled so as to form a whole, when not in use, a lid, projections on said lid adapted to fit into the notches of the higher element. L5 In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
