This invention relates to' certain new and useful'iinprovements in windows, and has more particular reference to a window frame andsash therefor, A "primary object of this invention is to provide a windows construction"including a sash and'frame especially, but not essentially adapted for use in railway car constructions V and more particularly for useon'the vestibule ""10 of street railwaycars.
A still further'objeet of the invention is to provide a structure of the above mentioned character which "will be stormproof, and which'will further serve the'purpose ofkeep- 1'6 ing out dust and the like.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a window frame, and sash therefor which willvbe strong, durable, will present a neat and attractive appearance and which will bewell adapted for the purpose designed. Each of the frame members 20 is provided with a suitable notch 21 for accommodatingan edge portion of a transparent pane 22. Cooperating with the members 20, for retaining the ane 22 in position, are the members of a su stantially rectangular frame 24. The members of the frame 24 are preferabl of hollow construction, and the frame is pre erably' formed of metal. The members of the frame 23 are secured to the frame members 20 through suitable bolts or other fastening elements 25. l
Carried by each vertical member of the frame 2%, adjacent the lower end of the window sash, is a suitable spring actuated lock bolt structure designated generally by the reference character 25. The inwardly directed flanges 8 of the respective plates 5 are each provided with a vertical series of spaced.
openings 26 adapted to be selectively engaged by the bolts of the lock bolt structures 25 for retaining the window in either a'fully closed or fully opened position, or in a predetermined partially opened or closed condition as is apparent.
Preferably, in actual practice, the plates 1 of the respective members A and B of the frame, are arranged eXteriorly of the car, and the plate 5 of the respective members A and B, are arranged interiorly of the car.
Completing the frame F are upper and lower channel members 28 and 29 respectively. The upper and lower members 28 and 29, connect the vertical side members A and B of the frame and suitably close the space between the plates 1 and the pairs of plates 5 of the respective frame members A and B. The said members 28 and 29, being of channel shape in cross section, snugly receives between the sides thereof the horizontal edges of the plate '1, and plates 5, thus preventing the entrance of dirt, rain, sleet or the like into the space between the plates 1, and the pairs of plates. 5.
As is apparent, the window when in closed position will close only substantially half of the window opening O, that is the space between the side members A and B of the frame. The window opening 0 at the upper half thereof is normally closed, through the medium of a suitable plate 30 that extends between the sides A and B. Thus, when the window is closed, the opening 0 will also be entirely closed.
It is thought that from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyin drawings, that a clear understanding 0 the operation, structure, utility and advantages of a window frame and sash as comprehended by the present invention will be had by those skilled in the art without a more detailed description.
, Even though Ihave herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is tobe understood that the same is susceptible to changes, modifications and improvements coining within the scope of the appended claims. I Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew is:
1. A window construction comprising in combination a frame including a pair of vertical side members respectively comprising a plate, a rib integral with the plate, a pair of upper and lower half plates secured to said rib in spaced parallel relation to said 'first' mentioned plate, said first mentioned plate and said half platesrespectively provided ad- M jacent their vertical edges with'inwardly directed flanges, whereby to provide between the flange on the first mentioned plates, and the flanges of said half plates, guide channels, and a window sash operable between said side frame members, said sash provided with lateral oppositely extending plates operable within said guide channels.
2. window construction comprising in combination a frame including a pair of spaced apart vertical side members respectively comprising a pair of spaced parallel plates, a rib extending'parallel to said plates in the space between said plates, a window sash operable within said frame between said side members, said sash provided on opposite sides thereof with lateral plates adapted to extend inwardly of the space between the said plates of the respective'side frame members, said ribs, and the said plates carried by said window sash provided with cooperable means for guiding said sash during the raising and lowering of the latter. i I
3. In a window construction of the character described, a frame including a pair of vertical side members respectivelycompris ing a pair of spaced parallel plates, a rib extending verticallyv between said plates, said rib provided with a lateral vertically extending guide post, a window sash operable in said frame between said side members, oppositely extending flanges projecting laterally from said sash and operable'in the space between the plates of the respective side members of said frame, said flanges respectively provided with a pair of opposed jaws adapted to receive therebetween one of said guide posts.

A window construction comprising in combination a frame including a side member comprising a pair of spaced parallel plates, a rib extending parallel to said plates inthe space between said plates, said plates respectively provided adjacent one edge thereof with an inwardly directed flange, said flanges at their inner vertical edges terminating in spaced parallel relation to provide therebetween a guide slot, a window sash operable in said frame and provided with a laterally directed flange. operable within said guide slot, said rib, and the said flange of said sash provided with cooperating means for guiding the sash during sliding movement of the latter within said frame, the flange of one of said plates of said side member provided with a vertical series of spaced apertures, and a spring pressed lock bolt carried by said sash for selective engagement with said apertures for retaining said sash in a predetermined raised or lowered position.
6. In a window construction of the charac-, ter described, a window frame, a pair of parallel guide posts arranged in said frame, a window sash operable in said frame between said post, said sash provided with oppositely extending flanges projecting laterally therefrom, a pair of plates secured'to each of said flanges, the plates of said pair respectively provided with a clamping jaw and said guide posts adapted to be received between the jaws of the respective pairs of plates.
7. In window construction, the combination of a guide post, a sash having a side member provided with a flange projectinglateral- 1y therefrom, a pair of plates secured to said flange, said plate being provided with opposed cooperating jaws adapted to receive therebetween said guide post.
8. A metal window frame comprising a vertical side member having a vertical slot,
a vertical guide post arranged in said side member, a sliding sash in said frame and having a flange projecting laterally therefrom and passing through said slot, and opposed ]aws provided on said flange and having sliding contact with said guide post.
