His Attorney.
Patented Oct. 25, 1932 s 'il UNITED STATES CHARLES P. RANDOLPH, OP OAK PARK, ILI.INoIs, AssIGNoR'mO EDISON-ELECTRIC APPLIANOE COMPANY, OP CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OP NEW YORH Original application ilenIy June 21, 1927, Serial No. 200,478. Divided anti` this application filed January 20;
My invention relates to gaskets, more particularly to gaskets having application to door structure, and has for its kobject the provision of an improved gasket and gasket mounting.
My invention will be more fully set forth in the following description referring to the accompanying drawing, and the features of novelty which characterize my invention will be pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 200,478, filed June 21, 1927,
.15 for refrigerators.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a refrigerator to which my invention is applicable; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of a portion of a refrigerator and door embodying my invention; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the lrefrigerator door shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view ,in section of a gasket and mounting therefor embodying my invention.
By way of example and without limitation thereto, my invention is illustrated as applied to a refrigerator for maintaining a perfect seal when the refrigerator door is closed. In Figs. 1 and 2 the refrigerator 1 which may be of the usual construction is provided with a door 2 having a stepped edge wall or throat lining 3 for the purpose of increasing the thermal path for the conduction of heat. At and along the outer edge-of the door 2, as better illustrated in Fig. 3,' is mounted a gasket 4 arranged to provide a perfect seal between the door and the refrigerator proper when the door is in its normally closed position.
As indicated in Fig; 4, the compressible gasket 4 is made of rubber or other compres-- 50 cated by the reference numeral 7, onto a strip Serial No. 509,989.l
of spring metal 8, whereby the strip is secured between them. The outer edge of this strip forms a spring clip and is curved overl around the beaded edge 9 of the gasket so as to secure the gasket in place. The gasket, however, may be readily pulled out from-under the spring strip 8 for renewal, a curved edge being formed on the strip to facilitate the insertion and renewal of the gasket.
In construction, the gasket comprises an outer laye-r 10 of waterproof material, such as rubberized cloth enclosing a mass of loose hemp threads or wicking 11. The bead 9 of ythe gasket is formed with a hard cord or Wire 12. vIt will be understood that the outer layer of ywaterproof material 10 completely encloses the outer enlarged gasket portion as Well as the cord 12, and in fact secures the cord to the gasket portion in parallel relation v thereto. The gasket portion may also be made of rubber, either hollow or solid. The spring-like retainer 8 permits the gasket to beV readily slipped in place after thedoor has been completely finished. v y The bent over, extending edges of the Outer and inner door shells therefore provide not only a permanent mounting for the gasket but in addition a flange for the door coacting with the gasket for making the seal. There is little possibility of the spring Vclip becoming ldisengaged from its position, thereby rendering the gasket mounting a permanent part of the door so that the gasket may be replaced when desired.
It should be undertsood that my invention is not limited to specific details of construction and arrangement thereof herein illustrated, and that changes and modifications may occur to one skilled in the art without,... departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A door having outer and inner metallic shells, at least one of said shells projecting... around the edge of the door and being folded" upon itself, a spring clip secured in the fold of said projecting shell, and a gasket for said l door removably secured by said clip.
2. A door having outer and inner metallic.M shells, said inner shell forming a Wall about the edge of said door, atleast one of said shells projecting around the edferof said door and being folded upon itself; a spring clip secured in the fold of said projecting shell ad- 'acent the edve Wall of said door, and a gaset for said door removably secured by said clip, said gasket being disposed between the folded portion of said projecting shell and p-hefatmetuxe e lbe. sealed by Said Agesl-m@ in the closed .Position Qsad @QOL In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of January, 1931. CHARLES RANDOLPH.
