JOHN MCOARTHY, OF SYRAOUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN REMOVABLE FACE-GLASSES FOR COFFINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lfb, dated March 13,1877;v application tiledv February 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCOAR'IHY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Removable Face-Glasses I of Oofns and Burial-Gaskets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain novel, simple, and etective devices connected with the coffin-lid, face-glass frame, and lid ot' the latter, whereby the tace'glass frame is pivoted or hinged to the cofnlid, so as to allow it to be readily opened and closed without danger of marring the coiin-lid, and rendered self-tightening when closed. v
The invention consists, principally, in the combination and arrangement of a bolt loosely connected with the coffin-lid, and carrying on its on ter end theface-glass frame, and having at its lower extremity a hook or shoulder, engaging, when the face-glass is opened, with a bridge on the under side ofthe coffin-lid, which raises the face-glass frame, so as to allow it to be swung on its pivot without marring the cof'- iin-lid, and, when closed, with awedge, which causes the face-glass frame to be drawn down tight upon the coindid, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner hereinafter fully described.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure lis a top view ot' my invention when closed; Fig. 2, the same when opened; Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section ot' Fig. l; Fig. 4, a top view ofthe face-glass cover detached; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are enlarged detail views,A showing more fully the construction and operation ot' the invention. p
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the coffin-lid; b, the face-glass,
set in an oval frame, which, at one end, is pivshoulder of the bolt that, in closing the faceglass, the shoulder ot' the bolt is brought under the wedge to draw the face-glass frame down upon the coin-lid, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, and in opening the face-glass the shoulder ot' the bolt c is brought on top of the bridge fu to raise the face-glass frame, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing, and allow the same to be swung on its pivot without danger ot' marring the coffin-lid.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe combination andarrangclnent, with the face-glass frame and the lid ofthe coftln, of the bolt c, fitted loosely in the lid A, and carry ing on its outer end the face-glass frame b, and provided with the hook or shoulder e at its lower extremity, and the wedge w and bridge fv, attached to the under side of the coiiin-lid, at opposite sides ot' the bolt c, construeted and combined to operate substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofl I have signed my name and aflixed my seal in the presence ot' two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county ol' Onondaga and State of New York, this 3d day of February, 1877.
