lhis invention relatesto machines for extruding heavy plastics such as rubber. One purpose of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus of this type in which gxthe screw is more efiectively mounted to withstand the heavy loads thereon and the bearin s and driving instrumentalities are more e actively lubricated.
Other purposes are to provide means for vfacilitating withdrawal of the stock from the feeding hopper b the screw and improved means for contro ling the plasticity of the stock. Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a suitable sup ortin structure or base on which is mounts a jac et '11 for an expressing tubs i2 in which is operable an expressing so Jacket 11 is formed lie. with a. hopper for delivering the rubber to the enpressirw and a strainer 15 is se cured to said acket through which the rubber is espressed ifor said tube.
Jacket 11 is provided with chambers 16 and 17 extending about the same and adapted to is arranged in the receive fluid mediums such as steam or water for controlling the plasticity of the stock.
To control supplyof steam or water to each of chambers 16 and 17 a supply chest 18 is mounted on the upper side of jacket 11. Steam and water pipesare connected thereto respectively at 19 and 20 delivering the steam and water respectively to longitudinal asthe chest which is connected to chamber 17 by a duct 30. A further control upon the plasticit of-the stock may be had by chambering t e strainer 15 at 15 and 15" to which piping is connected as shown, whereby cool} ing or heating mediums may be supplied to the chambers.
An exhaust chest 31 is provided on the under side of jacket 11 having a chamber 32 for receiving the fluid medium from chamber 16 through a duct 33 and having a chamber 34 for receiving the fluid mediums from chamber 17 through a duct 35. Valves 36 and 37 respectively are arranged to control flow of the mediums from chambers 32 and 34 to a drain 38.
To eifectuate feeding of the material from the hopper 14 by the screw 13, the inner wall of the tube 12 at, and adjacent to, the hopper is formed with grooves 12' inclined toward the direction of extrusion to resist any tendency for the material to ride around on the screw, and cooperating with the screwto feed the stock forwardly.
The driving of screw 13 is accom lished by the use of wormgear 40 arrange to be driven by a. worm 41 both contained in ahousing t2 and the gears meshing in a lubricant 4:3 contained in said housing. Gear 40 is journaled upon a central sleeve- 46 fixed in the housing and is secured to. a flange ring 47 keyed upon a quill 48 journaled in sa d sleeve 46 on end bearings 49 and 50, a thrust bearing 51 being arranged between a shoulder 46 on sleeve 46 and a shoulder 48' on quill 48. What is claimed is 1. In an extruding machine, a screw, a driven quill holder keyed loosely thereto, a sleeve member in which the screw and the qlixull are journaled, said member supporting t erem bearings for the quill at each end thereof and also an intermediate thrust bearing between shoulders on the sleeve and quill, a worm gear journaled about said member and connected to the quill at the end thereof, a driving worm meshed with the worm gear at the bottom thereof, a casmg aboutthe gearing defining. a reservoir for lubricant about the gears and worms where they are meshed, a pump driven I for su by the worm, connection to the pump for suplying lubricant from the reservoir to said earings, a separator acting on the screw beyond the inner end bearing to keep the lubricant in the casing and to keep dirt out of the casing, and a connection between the se arator and the inner bearing for returning ubricant to the reservoir. v
2. In an extrudin machine, the combination with a screw, 0 a jacketed sleeve member in which the screw is 'ournaled, means for passing fluid through t e jackets of said sleeve members, said sleeve member supporting therein bearings for the screw at each end thereof and also an intermediate thrust bearing betw een. shoulders on the sleeve and screw, a gear journaled about said member and connc eted to the screw at the end thereof, a driving gear meshed with the ear at the bottom thereof, a casing about t e gearing defining a reservoir for lubricant about the gears where they are meshed, a pump driven y the driving gear, connectlon to the pump lying ubrlcant from the reservoir to sai arings, a separator acting on the screw beyond the inner end bearin to keep the lubricant in thecasing and to cap dirt out of the casing, a connection between the separator and the inner bearing for returning lubricant to the reservoir, and a passage on the opposite side of the separator ring from said connection to allow dirtor the like to escape from the machine.
3. In an extruding machine, the combinationwith a screw, of a sleeve member in which the screw is journaled, said member suplportingtherein bearings for the screw at eac end thereof and also an intermediate thrust bearing between shoulders on they sleeve and screw, -aworm gear journaled about said member and connected to the screw at the end thereof, adriving worm meshed withthe worm ear at the bottom thereof, a casing about t e earing defining a reservoir for lubricant a out the gears and worm where they are meshed, a pum driven by the worm, and connections to t e pum for supplying lubricant from the reservoir to said bearings.

In an extruding machine, the combination with a screw,of a sleeve member in which the screw is journaled, said member supporting therein bearings for the screw at each end thereof and also an intermediate thrust bearing between shoulders on the sleeve and screw, a gear journaled about said member and connected to the screw at the end thereof, a driving gear meshed with the. ear at the bottom thereof, a casing about t e gearing definin a reservoir for lubricant about the ears w ere they are meshed, a pump driven y the driving gear, and connections to the pump for supplying lubricant from the reservoir to said bearin 5. In an extruding apparatus, a sleeve, a driven quill journaled therein, an extruding passage, and ascrew therein, said screw being connected at one end in the quill to be driven thereby, said connection being loose to permit slight movement of the screw out of exact alignment with the'quill whereby considerable strain is relieved from the quill bearings.
7. In an extruding machine, a screw, a driven quill holder keyed loosely thereto, a sleeve member in which the screw andthe quill are journaled, said member supporting therein bearings for the quill at each end thereof and also an'intermediate thrust bearing between shoulders on the sleeve and quill, a worm gear journaled about said member and having driving connection with the quill at theend thereof, a driving worm meshed with the worm gear at the bottom thereof.
8. In an extruding machine, a housing and a sleeve having aligned axial bores, a quill, means radially journalling said quill at both said worm gear, a worm for driving the worm gear, means for lubricating said bearings, and a separator ring between said screw and said quill to keep the lubricant in the bearin s and the dirt out, said separator ring including a wedge-shaped element yieldingly urged against the quill.
- 11. In an extruding machine, a housing, a screw, means including a quill connected to the screw for journaling the screw, in the housing, a hopper on said housing, means for lubricating said journaling means, and a separator ring between said hopper and said journaling means to keep the lubricant in said journaling means and the dirt out, said separator ring including a wedge-shaped element yieldingly urged against the quill.
