' ron'rnmn sum1 rum? Application. led Augult 22, 1827. Serial N0.- 214,519.
' An object of this invention is to provide an exceedingly compact sump pumping device to economize floor space by disposing the pump, the strainer, the control float, and' i the driving motor in vertical alignment.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sump pumping device having a vertical tube or shaft casing supported by -a spider bracket on a pump so that the casing may serve as a guide for the float and the motor control means operated by the float, and to support the driving motor and house the driving shaft extending between the motor and the pump.
An important object of this invention is to provide in a sump pumping device of the class described means whereby the driving shaft enters the pump casing through the suction side of the pump without requiring a packed joint between theshaft and the pump.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in thespecification and the accompanying drawing. y
This invention (in a. preferred form) isillustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the assembled pump.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section view of the pump of Figure 1, looking from the left, and with parts in elevation.
As shown on the drawing: The reference numeral 10 indicates a sump pump base upon which is detachably mounted a centrifugal sump pump casing 11. Within the casing is an impeller 12 which is driven by a vertical shaft 13 housed in a tube 14. Integral with the pump casing 11 is a tube supporting member or spider 17 comprising upwardly extending fins carrying an 1ntegrally formed annular cup-like ring 18 havmg a right angled inwardly projecting portion 19 and downwardly depending therefrom a collar member 20 carrying a guiding sleeve bearing 21 in which the shaft 13 is journaled. The inner face of the wall of the rlng 18 is threaded to engage with threads on the outer face of the tube 14 while the lower end of the tube bears on an abutment formed by the projection 19. A set screw 22 locks the tube in place in the ring 18.
A strainer 16 is detachably secured on top of the pump casing 11 and forms a housing protecting the tube supporting means 17.
The upper wall of the pump casing 11 has al central opening through which the shaft 13 projects and through which the liquid to be pumped passes to the impeller 22 for discharge through the outlet 39 and its conf nections.
It is important to note that because the shaft 13 is housed in the tube 14 seated in the tube support 17 and is guided through the sleeve 2l therein it passes through the suction opening of the pump without requiring a packedA joint.
The tube 14 guides a metal float 23 and the float alternately engages with ioat travel limit stops 24 and 25. The limit stops consist of rings 24 and 25 fitting loosely around the tube 14 and having suitable means for detachably connecting them with a switch operating rod 26. The switch operating rod engages a switch lever 27 of a switch 28 mountedon a casing 36 to control a motor 29.
The upper portion of the Atube 14 threadedly engages a sleeve coupling 30 and abuts an inwardly projecting annular shoulder 31 near the lower end of the coupling 30. A set screw 32 locks the tube in the coupling 30. An apertured partition 33 on the upper end of the coupling carries a guiding sleeve 34 in which the shaft 13 is journaled.l
The shaft 13 and its attached impeller 12 is held suspended by suitable bearing means 35 housed in the casing 36 as shown. The casing 36 threadedly engages with the upper end of the sleeve coupling 30 and the set screw 37 locks it in position.
The motor 29 is suitably mounted on the upper end of the casing 36 and the motor shaft is cou led to the pump shaft 13 by means of a exible coupling 38 housed4 within the casing.
The stop rings 24 and 25 are adjustable along the tube 14. The fioat 2.3, when the pump is inserted in a sump or like place for pumping purposes, and the stops 24 and 25` are adjusted to the height of the water to be pumped. The fioat 23 will bemoved upwardly against the upper stop 25, thereby actuating the switch 28 to operate the motor. The motor will continue until the float 23 drops, engaging the lower stop 24, whereupon the switch is actuated to stop the motor.
The device is a portable sump pump and may be readily carried from place to place.
The outlet 39 has connected to it hose or other connections for delivering the fluid pumped to any place of disposal.
The strainer 16 prevents the`entry into the pump casing of -dirt and the like, thus permitting an operation of the pump under usual conditions of service.
I aim aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this. invention, and I therefore do not purpose'limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise tha necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A portable electricbsump pump comprising a base, a centrifugal pump casing on said base, an impeller in said pump casing, a spider on said-pump casing terminating in a cup, a shaft tube extending upwardly from the cup, a motor on the upper end of said tube, 'and a shaft within said tube carrying said impeller, said shaft being mainly supported by bearings adjacent the upper end of said tube, a iioat guided on said tube, and a motor switch arranged to be actuated by said float.
