This invention relates to dispsQSfiIS f9! nails, tacks, etc.
An object of the invention is to provide a dispenser for nails, tacks, rivets, etc., hav- 5 ing an elongated receptacle for receiving the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, and fQl moving them individually and successively to a position in which their heads are exposed and in position to be engaged manually or by a tool and withdrawn for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type and character mentioned having an actuator controlled by a spring for pressing the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, to positionfor withdrawal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of .the type and character inenv tioned with a loader comprising a magazine arranged to receive and to contain the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, in rows, in combination with n eans'for controlling the discharge of the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, from said magazine into the dispenser. The magazine orloader comprises one or more tubes adapted to receive and contain the stems or shanks of nails, tacks, rivets, etC.;
each tube has a radial slot through which 7! the stems or shanks of the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, extend and through which the heads cannot pass. Accordingly, the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, may be moved along the tubes and along the slots, the heads being on the outer sides of the tubes and the stems or shanks extending through said slots and into the tubes. Means is provided in connection with the tube or tubes to guide the fasteners comprising the nails, tacks, rivets, etc, along the tubes toward the discharge end and to prevent these i fasteners from dropping out except as desired, and through the discharge end of the device. i i In the embodiment shown the magazine or V loader comprisesan elongated body 1 having longitudinally therein two tubes 2 designed and adapted to receive the stems or shanks of the fasteners. From each of the tubes 2 there is alongitudinal slot 3 through which theg stems of shanks of the fasteners extend so abut against the walls of the body 1 at the "sides .of the slots 3. The body 1 has a longitudinal raised portion 4 between the slots 3 "e and spaced therefrom a suflicient distance so that. said raised portion will not interfere with the heads of the fasteners nor'prevgnt free longitudinal movement of the fasteners we device from the loading end some discharge end. A plate 5 is fastened to the raised portion 4 by removable screws 6 which permit the plate to be removed and replaced as desired. The upper end of this magazine or loader is equipped with a removable closure for the ends of the tubes 2, the same comprising a plate 7 arranged to be seated across the ends of the tubes 2 and having its ends 8 bent downwardly to engage against the sides of the body 1. A screw 9 is mounted in the upper end of the body 1 and the plate 7 has therethrough a hole 10 of sufficient size to permit the head of the screw 9 to pass freely therethrough in order to attach and remove said plate. A radial slot from the hole 10 permits lateral sliding movements of said plate so that when the screw 9 is received in the radial slot the plate 7 will be held in position. On its outer edge the plate 7 has a handle or finger button 11 whereby the plate may be freely manipulated; and on its inner edge said plate is formed with a lip 12 constituting an abutment to engage against the inner side of the body 1 and limit extent of outward movement of the plate. The abutment 12 permits the plate to move outwardly to a. position in which the hole 10 is opposite the head of the screw 9 so that the plate may then be lifted from the end of the device to permit the device to be loaded or unloaded as desired.
For each tube 2 a holder or abutment for supporting the fasteners in said tubes is provided. Two of such tubes being shown, there are two levers 13 pivoted on brackets 14 attached to the sides of the body 1 by removable screws 15. The lower end of each of these levers '13 has attached thereto a pin 16 and these pins project into the space between the lateral edges of the plate 5 and the adjacent surface of the body 1. These 'pins project across the planes of the slots 3 in position to engage the heads of the lowermost fasteners contained in the device so as to support in said device the series of fasteners contained therein. A leaf spring 17 is provided for each of the levers 13, said springs being attached to the sides of the body 1 by removable screws 18 and having their free ends extending against the inner sides of the upper ends of the levers 13. Thus, the levers 13 are actuated to and yieldingly held by said springs 17 in position to support the fasteners in the magazine or loader. By pressing the upper ends of the levers 13 toward the sides of the body 1 in opposition to the springs 17, the pins 16 may be removed from the part of the heads of the fasteners so as to permit .the fasteners to move and discharge from the magazine or loader.

toward said notches in order to receive the rear side of the end portion of the dispenser.
A block 22 secured across the front of the lower end of the plate 5 by a removable screw 23 projects below the lower end of said plate and constitutes a part of the chuck or gage for locating the dispenser in position to be loaded. The block 22 has a beveled rear edge 24 to facilitate and expedite the insertion of the end of the dispenser in the chuck in position to receive a load of fasteners from the magazine or loader.
This magazine or loader may be carried by the user if desired, or may be mounted in any appropriate location. Where the device is to be carried by the user the body 1 may be formed with a pair of loops 25 near its upper end and a like pair of loops 26 near its lower end to receive belts 27 that may be fastened around the waist of the user so as to support the magazine or loader in convenient position for use to load the dispenser.
The dispenser'shown comprises an elongated tube 28 designed, adapted and arranged to receive and contain the stems or shanks of the fasteners and having a long tudinal slot 29 through which said stems or shanks may extend. Like the slots 3, the slot 29 will not permit the passage of the heads of the fasteners. supports the fasteners in position in which the heads are on the outside of the tube 28 and in which the stems or shanks of the fasteners extend through the slot 29 and into said tube. A plate 30 is attached to the tube 28 by removable screws 31 and has its inner edge spaced outwardly beyond the opening from the slot 29 so that the heads of the fasteners are between the plate 30 and the tube 28. This prevents the fasteners from drop- 1 ping out of the device and guides them properly toward the discharge end. The lower end of the laterally extended portion of the plate 30 terminates short of the lower end of the tube 28 and has a beveled surface 32.
A bracket 33 is attached to the plate 30 by removable screws 34. An arm 35 is mounted on a pivot 36 in connection with the bracket 33 and has at its lower end a laterauy extended p n 37 designed and arranged to extend across the lower end of the tube 28 so as to close said tube 28 and preventthe fasteners from dropping from the end of said tube. has therein a notch 38 to receive the stems or shanks of the fasteners successively as the fasteners come into contact with said arm. This dispenser may also comprise actuator or impeller for the fasteners. :In the embodiment shown .a block .39 is mounted for sliding movements along a rail .40 ineconnection with one side of the tube .28.. energy of this spring 48 is utilized to rotate the drum or barrel 46 in a direction to move the block 39 along the rail 40 so as toactuate or impel the fasteners '49 toward the discharge end .of the dispenser. As shown, the
fasteners 49 are of that type comprising elongated stems having circumferential heads. The discharge end of the dispenser is the end across which the arm 37 extends. 'VVhen the block 39 is moved along the vrail :40 foward the drum or barrel 46 said barrel is rotated by the cord 43 and the spring 48 is thereby rewound and re-energized. It is necessary to move the block 39 toward the drum or barrel 46 when the dispenser is being loaded or is receiving a load from the magazine or loader. t'ion 50 which constitutes a finger hold or handle whereby said block may be moved toward the spring drum or barrel 46.
The spindle 47 is mounted in a bracket 51 which is attached to the end of the tube 28 This bracket constitutes an abutment to limit extent of movement of the block 39 toward :the drum or barrel 46 and stops said block "39 in position in which a spring latch =53 is engaged in a notch or seat 54 in the adjacent edge of said block 39. The device is fastened to the forearm in .a position and relationship in which the discharge end of the device is downward or toward the hand and in which the guide plate 30 and the discharge opening at the beveled end 32 thereof are toward the front. In such position-the head of one of the fasteners 49 is always exposed beyond the beveled end 32 of the plate 32 so that the fastener may be withdrawn laterally without any interference other than the frictional engagement of the nextadjacent fastener under pressure .of the block 39.
In use, the tubes 2 of the magazine or loader "are loaded with "fasteners in a rela tionship in which the downward edge of the head of each fastener extends over the upper edge of thenext adjacent fastener, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 8. The tubes 2 may be filled or loaded with fasteners having stems of less length than the diameter of the tubes-or of considerably greater diameter or of any intermediate lengths as desired. For, when the stems of the fasteners are of {greater length than the diameterof the tubes said stems will assume :tu'be 28-open. The end of the tube 28 is then 1 T placed in one of the notches -21 of the-chuck :or gage .19. In this relationship the slot 29 is in a-linement with and in continuation of the adjacent slot 3 and .the opening in the ttube28'ris in continuation of and in alinement with the adjacent tube 2. Then, the lever 13 is operated to withdraw the abutment 16, as shown in Fig. 8. WVhen the abutment 16 is thus withdrawn the fasteners 49 slide downwardly from the magazine or loader into the dispenser tube 28. During this loading operation the block 39 is latched in its retracted position by the spring 53. After the tube 28 is filled or loaded with fasteners the lever 13 is released, whereupon the spring 17 operates said lever 13 to move the abutment 16 below the fasteners in the magazine or loader. Then, the dispenser is removed from the chuck or gage 19 and the arm 35 is moved to position in which the part 17 is across and closes the end of the tube 28. Because of the relationship of the fasteners in the magazine or loader, these fasteners in the tube 28 are located in position so that the lower edge of the head of each fastener is under the upper edge of the head of the next lower fastener, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 1 1. Then, the spring 53 is disengaged from the notch 5 1 in the block 39, permitting the spring 48 to control the cord 43 and press the flange 4:2 against the uppermost fastener 49. Thus, one of the fasteners is always yieldingly held in the notch 38, and has its head below the beveled end 32 of the plate 30.
If the workman is using a magnetized tool the fasteners may be successively and rapidly withdrawn longitudinally in the direction of their heads by placing the end or head of the magnetized tool against the head of the .XPOSQfl fastener 4-9 below the beveled end of the plate 30 and then withdrawing the tool. Or, the workman may readily remove the fasteners longitudinally in the direction of their heads by use of his fingers. In either case the workman is supplied with individual fasteners at much greater speed than he can be supplied otherwise.
From the foregoing it is now apparent that 3 my invention is a highly useful and simplified device comprising a dispenser and a loader therefor whereby the workman is supplied with these fasteners at much greater speed and convenience than in cases where the workman carries the fasteners in a pocket or other receptacle, for instance. The construction, arrangement and relationship of the parts comprising the invention may be widely varied without departure from the nature and principle thereof. I do not restrict myself unessentially in any particular, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a slotted tube, means for supporting headed fasteners in connection with said tube in a relationship in which the stems of the fasteners are enclosed in the tube and the heads are on the outside of the tube, an elea wall across the end of said slot in position to be engaged by and support the heads of said fasteners, a guide for said actuator, a connection for moving said actuator, and a device for operating said connection.
2. A device of the character described com prising a slotted tube, means for supporting fasteners in said tube, an element preventing the fasteners from dropping out of the tube and terminiating short of the end of the tube to expose the fasteners at the end of the tube, an actuator for moving the fasteners along the tube, a wall across the end of said slot in position to be engaged by and support the heads of said fasteners, a guide for said actuator, a connection for moving said actuator, means for operating said connection to move said actuator in one direction, and an engageable portion in connection with said actuator for moving said actuator in the opposite direction.
3. A device of the character described comprising a slotted tube for supporting fasteners, a device for preventing the fasteners from dropping out of the tube laterally, and
an element pivotally supported by said tube and movable to position to extend across the end of the tube to support the fasteners in the tube and being spaced from said device a distance sufficient to permit withdrawal of the fasteners laterally from said tubes.
4. A device of the character described comprising a tube having a longitudinal slot permitting the stems of fasteners to extend into the tube and the heads of the fasteners to remain on the outside of the tube, a device for holding the fasteners from dropping laterally from the tube, and an elementpivotally supported by the tube and extending across the end of the tube to prevent the fasteners from dropping longitudinally from the tube and being spaced from said device a distance sufficient to permit lateral withdrawal of the fasteners from said tube.
5. A device of the character described comprising a tube having a longitudinal slot permitting the stems of fasteners'to extend into the tube and the heads of the fasteners to remain on the outside of the tube, a device for holding the fasteners from dropping laterally from the tube, an element pivotally supported by the tube and extending across the end of the tube to prevent the fasteners from dropping longitudinally from the tube and being spaced from said device a distance suflicient to permit lateral withdrawal of the fasteners from said tube, and an actuator for moving the fasteners along the tube toward said element.

A device of the character described comprising a slotted tube for supporting fasteni iii ers and having an open end, a device preventing the fasteners from dropping laterally from said tube, an element plvotally supported by said tube for closing said open. end and being movable from said open end to open the end of the tube and being spaced from said device a suflicient distance to permit lateral withdrawal of the fasteners that are against said element, and means for moving the fasteners along the tube toward said element.
7 A device of the character described comprising a tube having a slot for supporting fasteners, a device preventing the fasteners from dropping laterally from said tube through said slot, an element for closing the end of said slot and supporting the fasteners in said slot, and means pivotally supporting said element for movement from said slot to open the end of the slot through said tube.
8. A device of the character described comprising a tube having a slot for supporting fasteners, a plate attached to and spaced from said tube opposite said slot preventing the 5' fasteners from dropping laterally from said tube through said slot, an element for closing the end of said slot and being movable from said slot to open the end of the slot through said tube, means forming a space through 30 which the fasteners may be withdrawn between the end of said plate and said element, an actuator extending between said plate and said tube and into said slot, and means for operating said actuator to move the fasteners along said slot toward said element.

A device of the character described comprising a tube having a slot for supporting fasteners, a plate attached to said tube at one side of said slot and having a portion extending across the plane of and spaced from the opening from said slot, a rail supported at one side of said tube, a block mounted for sliding movements along said rail and extending into the space between said plate and said tube and into said slot, a flexible connection attached to said block, a support for said connection near one end of said tube,
and means near the opposite end of said tube I for operating said connection to move said block along said rail.
10. A device of the character described comprising a tube having a slot for supporting fasteners, a rail along one side of said tube, a block mounted for sliding movements along said rail and extending into said slot,
a plate detachably secured to said tube holding said block in the position aforesaid and preventing the fasteners from dropping laterally from said tube, means supported by said tube for moving said block along said tube, and a handle attached to said block whereby said block may be moved in the opposite direction in opposition to said means.
