This invention relates to a coin selecting mechanism for vending machines of all types, and more especially to an automatic coin selector which is adapted to pass to the vending machine only coins which are genuine and of a predetermined weight and value, and which is adapted to'reject all spurious coins and other articles which may be placed into the vending machine. I
An object of my invention is to provide a coin selecting mechanism which is adapted to be used in connection with any coin controlled or check controlled apparatus, said mechanism being so constructed as to select the checks or coins placedtherein and to pass to the vending machine only genuine coins or checks, and which is adapted to return to the operator any'spurious coins or any foreign articles which may be placed in the coin selecting mechanism.-
An object of my invention is to provide a coin selecting mechanism which is adapted to be operated in connection with check controlled apparatus and which is so arranged as to pass to the check controlled apparatus only genuine coins and to return to the operator any coin or other articles which are not genuine.
Another object of my invention is to provide a coin selecting mechanism with means for weighing the coin and if found of'pro-per weight to allow the mechanism to .assume one position to pas-st'he coin or check to'the vending machine, and which is adapted to assume another position when the coin or check is not genuine, and to return the nongenuine coin or check or other articles which are deposited in the coin selecting mechanism to the operator.
Another object of my invention is to provide a coin selecting mechanism having a lever with a coin pocket therein which coin pocket is adapted to receive a coin or check and to pass it on to a balancing mechanism,
said mechanism controlling a deflector so that if the coin or Check is genuine. the deflector will be permitted to assume one position'to direct the coin or check into the vending apparatus, and if the coin or check isinot of a given value and is not genuine the deflecting mechanism will assume a different position and return the non-genuine Coin or check to the operator.
This application is a continuation in part of the structure shown and described in my co-pending application, Serial Number 351, 566, filed April 1st, 1929.

Referring more specifically to the draw ings' the numeral 10 indicates the main block portion in which my device is niountedpsaid block portion being a parallelogram composed of theside portionsll, 12, 13 and 14 with the plate 15 mounted on one side thereof and the plate 16 mounted on the other side thereof thus making a complete casing, and in which my mechanism is enclosed.
The bearing pin 17 has one end thereof mounted in the plate and the other end thereof is mounted in the support 18 which is secured to the portion 13 by'means of the screw 19. and on this bearing pin a plurality of members are securely mounted, and also members which will be later described are pivotally mounted thereon.
Loosely mounted on the pin 17 is the coin receiving lever 20 which has the arm 21 extending backward therefrom with the weight 22 on the end of said arm. This lever 20 has the coin receiving pocket 23 (see Figure 9) which is composed of the side wall portions 24 and 25 which portions 24 and 25 are bound together at their ends by means of the projection 26 and the pin 27 pierces the right hand portion as seen in Figure 1, and on this pin the forked member 28 is pivotally mounted, which member 28 has the projection 29 projecting therefrom, and the pin 30 passes from one side of this member 28 to the other side and when in lowered position this pin prevents the coin from dropping from the pocket 23, but when in upward position permits the coin to drop from this pocket into the balancing mechanism which will belater described. The projection 26 limits the downward movement of the member 28.
Fixedly secured on the pin 17 is the friction wheel 32 and the lever 20 has the pin 33 on which is pivotally mounted the arm 34 which has the weight member 35, and the clutch member 36, which clutch member 36 is adapted to engage the wheel 32 after the arm 21 has been depressed and as it starts on its upward movement. This member 34 has the member 38 projecting downwardly and outwardly therefrom, and the lower end of this member 38 which is indicated by the reference character 39 is in the form of an arc of a circle described with the pin 17 as its center, and mounted in the plate 15 is the pin 40 which is adapted to slide along the portion 38 and to disengage the clutch member 36 from the wheel 32 after the lever 20 has traveled a portion of its upward swing.
Securely'mounted on the pin 17 is the gear wheel 42 which gear wheel is adapted to engage the pinion 43 of the pin 44 which pin 44 has one end thereof mounted in the plate 15 and the other end thereof is mounted in the bearing 45 of the support 46 which is secured to the portion 13 of the block by means of the screw 47.
. The gear wheel 48 is fixedly secured on the pin 44 and this gear wheel meshes with the pinion 49 on the pin 50, which pin 50 has one end thereof mounted in the plate 15 and the other end thereof mounted in the bearing 51 of the member 46 which has previous- 1y been described. This pin is adapted to rotate and has the governor member 52 fixedly secured thereon which governor member has the eccentrically mounted disks 53 and 54 pivotally mounted thereon by means of the pins 55 and 56, the purpose of the above arrangement being to slow down the rate of speed at which the lever arm 20 will come back to raised position.
The lever 20 has integral therewith the downwardly projecting arm which has the pin 61 therein, and this arm 60 and the pin 61 will be later described in connection'with other mechanism.
Pivotally mounted on the pin 17 is the bell crank lever 65 which has the weight 66 on one end thereof and the other portion thereof projects downwardly and has the enlarged portion 67 which has the cavity 63 therein, in which the pin 69 on the balancing lever is adapted to normally operate and coinciding with this cavity 68 is the slot 70, which is in the form of the arc of a circle with the pin 17 as the center. On either side of this slot 7 O are the arcuate cavities 71 and 72, in'which cavities the pin 69 is adapted to rest when the coin is too light'orwhen the coin is too heavy as the case may be.
The lever 65 has the pin 73 therein which projects inwardly and secured in the portion 13 is the arm 75 which has the downwardly projecting bend 76 therein, forming a cavity in which the pin 7 3 is adapted to IQESC normally. This arm .75 projects outwardly and has the forked portions 77 and 7 8 therei l on, and the C-shaped member 80 is pivotally mounted on the pin 81 in the portion 77, and the pin 82 is mounted in the end of the portion 78 and prevents the member 80 from falling too far downwardly, but causes it to assume the position shown in Figures 1 and 2. The lever 60 when the lever 20 is down as shown in Figure 2 swings downwardly between the coin weighing mechanism, and as the lever 20 swings upwardly this lever 60 also swings upwardly, and the pin 61 follows the contour. of the member 75 and when it reaches the C-shaped member 80 this causes the member 75 to be raised and allows the pin 73 and the lever 65 to swing forwardly.
Secured to the plate 15 by means of the screw 85 is the outwardly projecting support 86 which projects upwardly as at 87 and forms one end of a support for the pin 88, which pin has the bushing 89 thereon to fit against the plate 15 and against the portion 87, and this pin 88 forms a support for my balancing and weighing mechanism which is indicated by the reference characters 90 and 91, which indicates the side portions of this device, and in the left hand end of the device as shown in Figure 1 the pin 92 is mounted therein and on this pin 92 is mounted the pivoted member 93 which fits on both sides of the balancing mechanism, and
wardly it will raise the member 93 and allow the coin to drop from the balancing mechanism into the chute below which will be presently described. The other end of the balancing mechanism has mounted therein the weight block 97 and the adjusting screw 98 and the pin 99, said pin being adapted to operate with stabilizing mechanism, which stabilizing mechanism comprises the pins 100 and 101 which are mounted in the portion 13 and projects outwardly, the pin 100 having an upwardly directed hook in the end thereof and the pin 101 having a downwardly directed hook, and the stabilizing member 102 is adapted to normally rest in the hook on the pin 100, but when a check which is too heavy is dropped into the other end of the balancing mechanism this will cause the pin 99 to rise upwardly and hit the cross-portion 103 and thereby raise the stabilizer 102 ofl'of the hook 100. NVhen the check is too light the pin 99 will not rise high enough to hit the portion 103, and when the check is of the proper weight the pin 99 will press against the portion 103 but the check will not be heavy enough to raise stabilizer 102 Oil the hook 100, but portion 103 will stop the pin 99 and thus cause the pin 69 to register with the slot 70 and allow the lever 65 to swing and operate the deflecting means to deliver the check to the check controlled apparatus. The stabilizer 102 is an added weight member which is adapted to be automatically connected to the balancing lever when the coin is of proper weight or above proper weight. When the check or coin is of proper weight the portion 103 will stop the balancing mechanism and the stabilizer 102 will not be lifted off hook 100, but the balancing mechanism will be arrested when pin 99 strikes portion 103, but when check or coin is too heavy the stabilizer 102 will be lifted off hook 100.
The pin 69 in the balancing mechanism which has previously been described projects through the cavity 68 in the lever 65 so that it is seen that when the coin or check is too heavy the pin 69 will rest in the cavity 71 and when the coin or check is too light the pin 69 will rest in the cavity 72 and will not coincide with the slot 70, but when of the proper weight the lever will be so balanced as to cause the pin 69 to coincide with the slot 7 0 and then when the pin 61 raises the memher 7 5 so that the pin 7 3 will be released and allow the lever 65 under pressure of the weight 66 to swing forwardly, and allow the coin deflecting mechanism to operate to directthe coin into the check controlled apparatus.
The coin directing mechanism mounted in the lower part of my device is best illustrated in Figures 7 and 8. We have the plate with the portions 111, 112, 113 and 114 secured thereto with the plate 115 secured on the other side thereof forming a space therebetween, and the pin 116 is mounted in the lower part of the plates 110 and 11 1, and on this pin 116 is mounted the Y-shaped member 117 which has the prong 118 and the prong 119, and on the outside of the casing formed by the members 110 and 115 is the arm 120 which is fixedly secured to the pin 116, and the connecting member 121 is pivotally secured to the upper end of the arm 120 and the lower end of the lever 65. The
chute 1 22 leads to the outside of the machine and the chute 123 leads to any check controlled apparatus, so that when the pin 69 and the slot 70 in the balancing mechanism and the lever 65 coincide to allow the parts to assume the position shown in Figure 7 and the coin when it is released from the balancing mechanism will fall downwardly and be deflected against the portion 119 and this will throw the parts into the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 and the coin will pass on downwardly through the slot 123 to the vending apparatus. l/Vhen the coin or check isnot of a predetermined value or weight the pin. 69 and the slot 70 will not coincide and when the coin is re-' leased by the upward movement of the lever 60 this will cause the lever 65 to fail to swing forwardly, and the deflecting member 118 will be in the position shown in Figure 1 and the coin will be deflected down through the chute 122 and will be returned to the operator.
The pin 125 is mounted in the portion 11 and limits the upward movement of the lever 20 while the pin 126 is mounted below the pin 125 at some distance therefrom, and this limits the downward swing of the lever 20 and serves'the purpose of tripping the member 28 and causing the member 28 to swing upwardly with relation to the coin receiving pocket 25 and this releases the coin from the pocket 25 and allows it to fall into the balancing mechanism where it is held by the pin 94 until the member 93 is raised upwardly by the swinging of the lever 60.
The balancing mechanism has the pin also piercing the member 90and 91 which assists the pin 95 in holding the coin in the balancing mechanism until it is released by means of the raising of the member 93.
It is evident that with the parts in the position shown in Figure 7, that is when the balancing mechanism has permitted the lever 65 to swing forwardly in order to fiect the-check or coin into the check-conlli -;. into the hole pocket trolled apparatus, that when the check of coin drops downwardly and is deflected into the passageway 123 that the coin will hit the portion 119 and force it to assume the position shown in Figure 2 in dotted lines, and I lie will return the lever 65 to normal position and will also return the member 118 to normal position as shown by the dotted line in Figure 2, and these parts will remain in this position until va genuine coin is dropped into the balancing mechanism to allow the pin 69 and the slot 70 to coincide in vhich instance the weight 66 will force the parts back to the position shown in Figure 7.
It is evident that in many coin or check controlled devices that'children and others will not only drop into the device spurious coins or checks but will also drop bits of steel and other objects and in order to prevent these objects from reaching my coin selecting mechanism 1 have de 'ised a peculiar arrangement through which the coin or check or other objects must before it reaches the coin selecting mechanism.

The pin 135 is pivotally mounted in the plates 136 and 132 and projecting upwardly from this pin is the member 136and on the outside of the casing as illustrated in Figure 2 is the weight member137 which is so arranged and adjusted that when a coin or check of a predetermined value is dropped 133 that the weight thereof will cause it to swing the member 136 on its pivot and will deliver the coin to the coin receiving 2 1, but when coin is not of sufiicient weight to entitle it to be tested by the weighapparatus the va -e 136 will not swing on pivot 135 but the minor other articles l be directed downwardly into the chat 13o be returned to the operator.-
The method of operation or" my device is as ollows: s
lVith a coin or check of a given value dropped into the mechanism through the hole let suppose that it is approximately of the proper weight and therefore it will swing the member 136 downwardly and the coin will go into the pocket 24 on lever 20 a. press it downwardly to the point where projection 29 will hit the pin 126 and so the member 28 upwardly and release in or check and dron it into the balancmechanism composed of members 90 and ,v 1 nd associated parts. During this downward movement the clutch member 36 has been sliding with relation to the wheel 32 but when the lever 20' starts its upward movement due to the force of the weight 22 the clutch member 36 will engage the wheel 32 and will turn the pin 17 and the wheel 12 which in turn will rotate the pinion 43 which in turn will rotate the wheel 48, which in turn will rotate the pinion 49 and the shaft 50 which will operate the governor mechaisms 52 and 53 and and this will cause the eccentrically mounted disks 53 and 54 to be swung outwardly and thereby slow down the motion of the wheels and other mechanism and cause the lever to return slowly to a certain point at which the pin will raise the clutch 36 from the wheel 32 and allow the remainder of the travel of the lever 20 upwardly to be accelerated. The purpose of slowing down the upward travel of lever 20 is to allow the balancing mechanism to vibrate up and down and assume a position of rest before the lever 20 reaches an upward travel sufficient to allow the pin 61 to raise themember 75 upwardly and release the pin 7 3 to free the lever 65, which in case the coin or check is of proper Weight will allow the lever 65 to swing forwardly and put the deflecting mechanisms 118 and 119 in proper position to deflect the coin into the vending apparatus or the check controlled apparatus as the case may be, and if the coin or check is not of proper value the pin 69 will not coincide with the slot 70 and when the lever 60 raisesthe member 93 the coin will be released and returned through the chute 122 to the operator.
It is evident that this device can be operated on any check controlled apparatus whether it be a vending machine, a pay station telephone or any other device which is operated by a check or coin. It is evident that my device is entirely automatic and requires the turning of no cranks nor the pushing of any button, nor anything except the mere depositina of the coin into the mechanism, the rest OI the operation being entirely automatic, thus rendering'this device capable of being operated with any coin or check controlled apparatus.
In the drawings and specification I have .set forth a preferred embodiment of my invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of my invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim: I
1. In afraud preventive device for coin controlled apparatus, a balancing mechanism, a pivoted coin receiving member, means for releasing the coin from the pivoted coin receiving member and delivering the same to the balancing mechanism, means controlled by the balancing mechanism for directing the coin into the'coin controlled apparatus, if genuine, and for returning the coin to the operator in case the same is defective. 7
2. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a movable coin'receiv ing member, a coin balancing mechanism, means for releasing the coin from, the movable member and delivering the same to the balancing member, means for deflecting the coin into a check controlled apparatus, said means being controlled by the balancing mechanism.
3. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a pivoted check receiv ing member, a balancing mechanism adapted to receive the check from the pivoted check receiving member, a deflecting member adapted to deflect a coin or check in one of two directions, means associated with said deflecting member and with the balancing mechanism adapted to control the position of the deflecting member by means of the weight of the check or coin in the balancing mechanism.
4. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a slot into which the check is adapted to be inserted, a pivoted check receiving member adapted to receive, the check inserted in the slot, a balancing mechanism, means for releasing the check from the pivoted member and delivering it into the balancing mechanism, two chutes below the balancing mechanism, a deflecting member being adapted to be operated to deflect the check into one of the two chutes, means associated with the balancing mechanism and with the deflecting mechanism for deflecting the check into one chute if of a given weight and to deflect the check into another chute to return it to the exterior of the machine when it is above or below a given weight.
5. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a balancing mechanism,
a pivoted check receiving member, said check receiving member being adapted to receive a coin, check, and the like and to deliver the same to the balancing mechanism, means con trolled by the pivoted check receiving member for releasing the check from the balancing:
mechanism, means for retarding the return of the pivoted check receiving member to normal raised position after having delivered the check or coin to the balancing mechanism,
deflecting means for deflecting the check in one of two directions after said check is released from the balancing mechanism, means associated with the deflecting mechanism and the balancing mechanism for operating the deflecting mechanism when a genuine C0111,
check and the like is placed in the balancing mechanism. I
6. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a pivoted member adapted to receive checks, a balancing mechanism' adapted to weigh said checks, means for transferring the checks from the pivoted memberto the balancing mechanism, deflecting mechanism controlled by said balancing mechanism adapted to deflect checks into or. out of the check controlled apparatus.
7.. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a pivoted check receiving member, a balancing mechanism, means for releasing the check from the pivoted member and delivering the same to the balancing mechanism, governing means associated with said pivoted member and being adapted to retard this return to normal position, deflecting mechanism pivotally mounted on the pivot point of the pivoted check receiving; mechanism, means controlled by the deflecting member and the balancing mechanism adapted to deflect a check in one of the two directions, and means controlled, by the piv-, oted check receiving member for. releasing the deflecting apparatus.
8. In a check controlled apparatus, means for deflecting checks in one direction if abovea given weight and for deflecting checks in another direction if below a given weight'comprising means for receiving checks above a given weight, a balancing mechanism adapt,
ed to receive said check, means fortransferjring the check from the receiving means tothe balancing mechanism, a deflecting mech-- anism controlled by said balancing mechanismoperable to deflect genuine-coins, checks and the like, into a check controlled apparatus, and being operable to return non-genuine coins, checks and the like to the machine.
9. In a fraud preventive means for check,
controlled apparatus, a pivoted check receiving member, a balancing mechanism for'said check, said coin or check receiving member being adapted to receivethe check and to au-; tomatically deliver the same to the balancing mechanism, a stabilizing mechanism associated with the balancing mechanism and being adapted to cause the balancing mechanism to quickly assume a balanced position after receiving the check, a. deflecting mechanismadapted to receive and deflectthe check after it is released from the balancing mechanism, and means associated with the balancing mechanism for controlling the deflecting mechanism. 1 v
10. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a check entrance,a piv oted check receiving member for receiving: checks vfrom said check entrance, a balancing mechanism adapted to receive said checks from said pivoted member, means for releasing the checks from said pivoted member when said check approaches the balancing mechanism, means for retarding the-movement of the pivoted member as it returns to normal position, deflecting means below the balancing mechanism,means operable by-the balancing mechanism and said pivoted member for determining which of two directions a check will travel after being'releasedfrom the balancing mechanism, and means associ:
the exterior of ated with said pivoted member for releasing a check from the balancing mechanism.
- 11. In a check handling device, a balancing mechanism, a deflector mechanism, a stabilizing mechanism associated with the balancing mechanism, means for receiving a check and conveying it to the balancing mechanism, means for locking the deflector mechanism in one position, means for releasing the deflector mechanism after said balancing mechanism has assumed aposition of rest, said balancing mechanism having means to pre vent moving ofthe deflector mechanism unless a check of proper weight is in the balancing mechanism.
12. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a balancing mechanism having means in one end thereof for receiving and holding a check, a conveyor mechanism for conveying the check to the said end of the balancing'mechanism and releasing the same to cause it to fall into the balancing mechanism, a deflector mechanism adapted to deflect checks out of and into the machine depending upon the weight of the check after it is released from the balancing mechanism, means associated with the conveying means for releasing said deflector mechanism, a stabilizing mechanism adapted to be operated when the check is deposited into the balancing mechanism to quickly stabilize the balancing mechanism, means associated with the conveying mechanism for releasing said deflector mechanism, cooperating elements as sociated with said balancing mechanism and said deflector mechanism to cause the deflector mechanism to operate only when a check of a given weight is present inthebalancing mechanism.
13. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a balancing mechanism, a pivoted conveying member adapted to convey a check to said balancing mechanism after the same is disposed in the device, a stabilizer mechanism associated with the opposite end of said balancing mechanism from the point where the check is received into the balancing'mechanism, a. deflector mechanism associated with the stabilizing end of the balancing mechanism, means associated with the conveying member for releasing the check from the balancing mechanism, and means associated with the conveying means for re leasing the deflector mechanism to cause the same to cooperate with the balancing mechanism, cooperating means between the balanc ing mechanism and the deflector mechanism for permitting the deflector mechanism to operate to deflect a check into the check controlled apparatus only when the balancing mechanism is in proper position. 7
14. In a fraud preventivedevice for check controlled apparatus, a check entrance, means for receiving the check after it is dropped into the check entrance, a balancing mechanism, said check receiving means being adapted to' convey the check from the check entrance to the balancing mechanism, a de flector mechanism associated with said bal ancing mechanism, means for normally locking the deflector mechanism to cause checks to be deflected to the exterior of the machine, means associated with the means for conveying the check from the check entra'nceto the balancing mechanism for unlocking the deflector mechanism to cause the deflector mechanism to'deflect the check into the check controlled apparatus when the check is of such a weight as to properly balance the balancing mechanism to allow the deflector to operate, and means associated with the check conveying apparatus for releasing the check from the balancing mechanism.
15; In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a balancing mechanism pivoted intermediate its ends and having in one end thereof a receptacle for a check, and having in the other end thereof means for adjusting the balance of said balancing mechanism, means for conveying a check to one end of said balancing mechanism, said conveying means having means associated therewith for releasing said check for said balancing mechanism, a deflector mechanism means for locking the deflector, means operable by the conveying means for unlocking the deflector mechanism, and means cooperating with the balancing mechanism and the deflector mechanism adapted to permit operation of the deflector mechanism when released to deflect the check into the check controlled apparatus if the balancing mechanism is properly balanced by the check therein.
16. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a balancing mechanism, a deflector mechanism, a pivoted check conveying device, a stabilizer mechanism associated with one end of said balancing mechanism, the other end of said balancing mechanism having means for receiving and holding a check after it is released from the conveying mechanism, means associatedwith said conveying means adapted to hold the conveying means in elevated position for reception of the check when inserted into the device, means for allowing free movement of said conveying member on its downward movement, retarding means adapted to become operative to retard the return of the conveying mechanism a to normal position, means associated with said conveying means for releasing the check from said balancing mechanism, means for locking the deflector mechanism in inoperative position, means associated with the conveyingmechanism for unlocking said deflector mechanism, a slot in said deflector mechanism, a pin in said balancing mechanism, said slot and said pin be-' ing adapted to coincide when a check of proper weight is held within the balancing mechanism to allow the deflector mechanism to operate to deflect a check into the check controlled apparatus.
17. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a balancing device pivoted intermediate its ends and having means in one end thereof for receiving and holding a check, a movable member supported adja cent the other end of said balancing device,
means on the balancing device for engaging said movable member, and raising it at least partially off its support when a check is received in the other end of said balancing de vice.
18. In a fraud preventive device for check controlled apparatus, a pivoted member, means for holding a check in one end of the pivoted member, means for releasing said holding means to discharge the check from the pivoted member, a stabilizer operatively associated with the other end of the pivoted member, means for normally supporting said stabilizer out of contact with the pivoted member and means in the pivoted member for contacting said member and raising it off its support when a check 1s recelved 1ntosaid pivoted member.
19. In a check testing apparatus, a pivoted member, means for holding a check in one end of the pivoted member, means for conveying a check to the pivoted member, a deflector disposed below the pivoted member for guiding the check after it is discharged from the pivoted member, deflector operating means, means operable by the conveying means for moving the deflector and deflector operating means to one position, cooperating means on the deflector, operating means and said pivoted member for controlling the movement of the deflector, a stabilizer supported independently of the pivoted member, means on the pivoted member for engaging the stabilizer when a check is received into said pivoted member, and means for retarding the movement of said deflector operating means.
