Description

W. TRACY.
DOOR-PLATES.
Patented March 6,1877.
"#515118, PNOTO-LITHOQRAPHEN. WASNINQTON. DJ:
WILLIAM TRACY, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE H. SWORDS, OF- FISHKILL ON HUDSON, NEVVYOR K,
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-PLATES.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No; 188,207, dated March 6,1877; application filed December 26, 1876. v I I To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that 1, WILLIAM TRACY, of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Door-Plate; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in door-plates and the invention consists in a name-plate. combined with a back plate by studs and slots, the nameplate being provided with a central guidefin and a stop-flange, the back-plate having an opening formed in it for the reception of letters and other mail matter.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention, showing name-plate raised. Fig. 2 is a cross section of same applied to a door; and Fig. 3 a rear view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
By this invention the ordinary door-plate is madetoserveadoublepurposethatis, besides acting as a name-plate. it covers a letter-drop formed into a plate immediately behind the nameplate. To effect this I construct a front or name plate, A, with studs 1) b, a stop-flange, 0, and also with a central guide-fin, d. The stop-flange, studs, and guide-fin are affixed to the rear surface of the name-plate. plate, B, with slots 0 e and opening f, for the A back reception of letters and other mail matter, and acentral guide-groove, 9, formed on its rear surface. is fitted to the front plate by placing the studs 1) b ofth'e front plate into the slots cent the back plate, and the central guide-fin d into the central guide-groove g of the back plate, the two' plates being held together by screws h h, which are inserted into the studs b b, with washers k is placed under their heads. These washers span the opening of the slots 6 e, and retain the two plates in place besides. The slots 6 e are surrounded with a raised lip, n, on which the Washers rest, and which slides against the under side of the washers as the back plate is moved up and down to cover or uncover the letter-opening f.
The back plate B may be attached to the door of the building in any desirable manner, a chute being formed in the door, through which the letters, &c., drop.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A name-plate, combined with, and secured to, a back plate by studs and slots, and provided with a guide tin, whereby the name-plate may slide upward and downward on the backplate, to close and unclose aletter-chute formed in the back plate, substantially as shown and described.
