llVl PROVEMENT IN FOLDING SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,186, dated March 6, 1877; application filed November 24, 1876..
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B.PULLINGER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description ofthe nature there of, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the seats embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line a; as, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the arms of the seat. Fig. 4 is a view of the inner face of one of the standards.

My invention relates to a foldingseat, in which the axial bolts will render long service,
and the seat will be easy to the occupant;
and it consists of the standards and side arms in combination with semi-spherical sockets, semi-spherical heads, bolts, and elastic pieces, as will be set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the standards, and B the side arms, of a folding seat. On the outer face of each side arm there is a swell, ball, or semi-spherical head, O, and on the inner face of the upper end of each standard A is a semi-spherical cavity or socket, D, which receives the head '0, thus forming the axis of the side arm.
In order to connect the side arm and standard there is passed centrally through them a bolt, E, which projects into the space aformed on the inner face of the side arm by the head 0. On the bolt E there is fitted a piece, F, of rubber or other elastic material, which bears against the side arm in the space a, and it is held in position by a nut, b, screwing on the bolt, a washer, 01, being preferably interposed between the elastic piece and nut. The openings 0 of the heads 0, and also, if desired, the openings f of the elastic pieces F, are made larger than the openings at of the sockets D, and of the diameter of the bodies of the screw-bolts E, so as to leave a space between each head 0 and bolt E.

It willalso be seen that when weight is on the seat the strain thereof to a certain extent is transmitted to the bolts E, and owing to the rubber or spring pieces F the seat will be elastic, and thus be easy. or comfortable to the occupant thereof. 1
On opposite sides of the heads (J there are formed stops G, which project outward, and on opposite sides of the sockets D there are formed stops H, which project inward, the
two sets of stops being arranged relatively to each other, so that when the seat is folded the stops of the head and socket at one side are in contact, and when the seat is opened the stops of the head and socket at the other side are in contact, whereby provision is made for limiting, respectively, the folding and opening of the seat.
It will also be noticed that the stops are concealed by the sockets of the standards, and thus there is no liability of engagement or catching of the dress of the occupant of the seat on said stops.

The combination of the standards A', having the semi-spherical sockets D, and openings at, the side arms B, having the semispherical heads 0, and enlarged openings 0, the bolts-E, and elastic pieces F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
