This invention relates to sheet winding apparat-us and particularly to paper winding machines of the kind commonly employed in the paper industry for rewinding paper in- In these machines the paper is rewound onto a winding shaft which is rotated by direct contact with the surface of the winding drum or with the paper passing over said surface. For reasons well known in the art it is important to the success of the rewinding operation that rotation of the winding shaft be initiated before the shaft is brought in contact with the winding drum and the object of the present invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for accomplishing this purpose.
According to the preferred embodiment of the invention rotation is imparted to the winding shaft through the medium of a pair of yieldingly mounted traction rings attached to the ends of the winding drum to rotate therewith. These rings are made large enough to project beyond the surface of the winding drum and to engage the winding shaft before the shaft is brought into direct contact with the drum. The traction rings are yieldingly supported from the drum by spring connections which permit the winding shaft to engage the drum after the desired initial rotation has been imparted to said shaft.
Proceeding now to a more detailed dis cussion of the invention reference will be had to theaccompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary side. view of a paper winding machine having the winding drum equipped with traction rings provided in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view showing the winding drum and the windingshaft in side elevation, a portion of the winding drum being broken away to illustrate the manner of attaching the traction rings thereto.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail attaching means shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing a slight modification.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 11 designates a winding drum of the usual type mounted in bearings 12 carried by the frame 13. The winding shaft 14 is carried in open bearings 15 provided at the upper ends of the arms 16. These arms 16 are mounted to swing about the pivoted connece tions 17 to carry the winding shaft to or from the drum 11. Any suitablemechanism may be employed for thus swinging the arms 16, but such mechanism is not shown herein since it forms no part of the present invention. The paper web appearing at 18 is threaded between the drum l1 and the shaft 14 and is attached to the latter in the usual manner.
The foregoing features of construction are well known in the art and form no part of the present invention which resides solely in the provision of means for imparting preliminary rotation to the winding shaft 14 before the shaft is brought in contact with the drum 11. This is accomplished by providing the drum with a pair of yieldingly mounted traction rings 19 which project beyond the surface of the drum for engagement with the shaft 14 as the latter is moved into winding relation with said drum. Each ring 19 is attached to an end of the winding drum by a plurality of springs 20. In the arrangement shown in Figures 2 and 3 the springs are substantially U-shaped and have their inner ends fastened to the winding drum by means of the studs 21 and nuts-22 which also serve to hold the drum heads 23 in place. The outer ends of these U-shaped springs are riveted or otherwise fastened as at 24 to the arms 25 of suitable L-shaped brackets 26 having their remaining arms 27 riveted or otherwise fastened to the inner surface of the rings 19.
In the modified arrangement shown in Figure 4 the springs 20a are bent into substantially circular form and have their outer ends attached .to the ring 19 by means of the Z- shaped brackets 28. In this arrangement the outer ends of the springs are substantially parallel with the inner surface of the ring and are attached to the arms 29 of the Z- shaped brackets 28 the remaining arms 30 of which are attached to the inner surface of the ring.
When the winding shaft is moved towards the winding drum by swinging movement of the supporting arms 16 the end portions of the shaft are initially engaged by the traction rings 19 which serve to initiate rotation of the shaft before the shaft, is permitted to have direct contact with the. winding drum. The supporting springs 20 or 20s connecting the traction rings to the drum permit the rings to be readily displaced to permit direct contact between the winding drum and the winding shaft following preliminary rotation of the shaft; 7
Having thus fully described whatI now conceive to be the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that various changes may be resorted to within the scope and spirit of-the appended claims.- 1 or example, the attachment of the traction rings to the winding drum is not'absolutely essen- I tial since the desired result-may also be obtained by attaching these rings to the ends of the winding shaft.
