WINDOW CONSTRUCTION Filed July 14, 1930 Patented Oct. 11, 1932 UNITED STATES ERNEST J. nrnnn'rmiu, oFNILns, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE .KAWNEER COMPANY,
PATENT OFFICE or NILES, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION on MICHIGAN wrNnow CONSTRUCTION Application filed m 14,
The present invention relates to window constructions, and more in particular to a novel window construction provided with a drop sash adapted to be lowered to its open positions.
Among the objects ofthe present invention :is to provide acnovel metallic sash construc- 'tion adapted to be slidingly positioned 1n a window frame andto form therewith a weather-tight closure whenever the sash is. in
' closed position. a
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel metallic frame construction adapted to receive a sash member and permit sliding movement of the same. The invention comprehends the use of catch means or mechanism mounted on the interior of the window sash adjacent the top thereof, such catch mechanism being provided with plungers adapted to seat in openings in the stiles of theprovision of a unitary frame construction in which the sash may be mounted at the factory, and the entire assembly of the window frame unit completed thereat, so that the unit may be shipped to its destination,
' position.
, the lower part of the frame.
and readily-applied to a building opening or the hull of a ship. I p
A further object of the invention is the provision of weather-tight sealingmeans for providing a weather-tight seal between the sash and frame when the sashis in closed Provision is further'made for the drainage of any liquid or other foreign matter which may enter the well or pocket in embodiment in which the window construction is shown as applied to a ship, drainage means are provided from'the lower portion of the pocket or well to the exterior of the hull of the ship so that any foreign matter which may collect in the pocket or well may,
. readily drain or be removed therefrom.
Further objects of the invention are to- In the present 1930. Serial No. 467,772.
provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efiiciency, economy and ease of assembly, I maintenance and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear, and are inherently possessed thereby.
The invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangements of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understoodthat I the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing: a
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the exterior of the window sash and frame construction.
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical cross section taken in the plane represented by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1..
Figs. 3 and 4: are horizontal cross sections taken in planes represented by the lines 33 and 4- respectively, of Fig. "1. i
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the upper corner of the sash construction.
Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the hull or metal plate of a ship'structure' provided with an opening in which is mounted a wmdowframe designated generally as I 2 and provided with a slidable sash 3.
The frame 2 comprises a sill consisting of an interior section or plate 4 and an exterior section 5, a head jamb 6, and stiles 7 and 8. Connected to the head jamb 6 and the section 5 of the sill, as by means of rivets, bolts or the like 9, are provided an upper metal trim 10'and a lower metal trim 11, which are suitably connected to the hull or metal plate of the ship. Likewise, the metal trim 12 is connected on the interior to the stiles? and 8 by means of a channel or groove portion,
these sections 12 of metal structure being disclosedas connected to the frame or metal plate 1 of the ship, as by means of bolts, screws or the like 14. The interior portion 4 of the sill is mounted upon a stool and may be connected thereto by any suitable means. 1
being provided with a-U-shaped-grooveor- Y- rib 2O seating within and slidingly engagingin-the U shapedgrooves or channels18. The
' head amb 6 is provided with'a horizontally" The head jamb 6 contactingly engages a head piece 16 ofv the interior wood trim and may be connected thereto as by means of screws or. the like. The stiles 7 and 8 are shown as being connected to the side j ambs 16 of the wood trim by means 'ofthescrews or the like 17.
The lower portion of the window frame .2V is shown as provided with a well or pocket 17 "adapted to receive'the sash 3whe'n' the same is in open 'position. 'As' disclosed in Figs. 2 and f, the stiles 7 and 8 extend to the bottom of this pocket or well 17, the stiles channel 18 adapted to receive the side rails 19 of the 'sash construction. These side rails are; provided with an outwardly extending doubled-over portion vto provide a. tongue or (extending*Ushaped groove'or channel 21 *si-mi'l ar'to the channels 18 in'the stiles, the
struction to the bottom rail 24, withthe exception that this bottom rail-isnot provideda ,"With adoubled-oversportion or-rib adapted toseatwithin aigroove for permitting-sliding engagement or for permitting a weathentight clos-ure, Each of-the rails is :provided'iwith a reinforcing bar 25-extending throughout the length of the rails and fitting conformably therein,
'Ghannel shaped"sections of felt or thelike 26 are provided' inrthe rails -adj'acentthere- :inforc'ing bars, so as to apermit expansion of.
.. the; glass along'with slight yielding-movement thereof. g In orderto provideaweathertight closure adjacent the bottom "rail when the-sash isin closed position, such rail istprovid'ed witha-strip 'ofrubber orthelike 27 havingan inclined-face 28 adapted to-seat 'against'aninclined face'onthe exterior member -5of the sill. This strip :may beattached-to the rail by means of 'boltiscrews or"the-like 29, or by. means of clips. :Latc'hmechanism 30 is provided oneach of theside rails adjacentthe top of the sash.- Each of the catch or latch mechanisms are .zpro-vided with 'a plunger adapted to seat in'openings suitably spaced in the stiles 7 and, 8 "so as to maintain the window inclosed position, or in various open positions.
. of-thesash. As disclosed, the side rails 19 and the top rail '23 are cut on a'bias at 31,
as likewise are the reinforcing bars 25 inserted therein. 'Boltsor the-like 83 are passedwindow.
elements whenever the sash is in lowered position, drain members 32 are provided adjacentthe bottom of the wall orpocket 17 and draining therefrom to the exterior of the hullof th'e'ship. 'Thus any liquid or any foreign matter collecting therein will drain from the pocket or well.
-.-Fromthe above disclosure and the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, it will be readilyseen 'that I have provided a 1 novel constructionof drop window and frame therefor, which "can'be "readily constructed "as annitandeasily assembled within a building opening and maintained. Althoughl have disclosed the invention as particularly applicable to a ship construction, it will be readily seen-'and understood that the same is 'admirably adapte'd for other uses and constructions. T i L Having thus disclosed my invention, 1
claim:
