.45 In the drawings a single-stage, double suction centrifugal pump is illustrated,.but it will be understood'that the invention isequally applicable to a multi-s'tage ormulti-pump.
The particular pump shown in the accompanying drawings and forming one em,-
bodiment of this invention, includes an inlet or suction duct or conduit A having at least a part of the housing B of the centrifugal, pump arranged within the suction duct and preferably formed integral therewith, this housing. including a discharge passage or duct C, which may also be formed integral with the housing and with the suction or inlet passage A. The pump housing shown extends substantially through the middle of 5 the inlet duct A, and in order to allow ample space between the sides of the suction duct and the pump housing and discharge duct, so that the liquid-in this suction duct may pass to either side of the discharge passage, 55 the intermediate portion of the duct may be enlarged or bulged out as shown at a, the
ends of the duct being of circular crosssection. In the particular constructlon shown,
the'pump housing is split horizontally, the lower portion D of the, housing being arranged'exterior to the suction duct A, and having afiange d which may be bolted or otherwise suitably secured to a flange b of thatportion of the housing which is formed integral with the suction duct A. A pump housing of other construction may be em;- ployed, if desired. V
In order to facilitate the mounting of the pump, the suction duct A may be supported on suitable beams or supports E, which may be frame members of a vehicle, or which may be a part of a fixed foundation. The suction ,duct A may either be elongated so as to rest upon the frame members or supports E, or, 35 as in the construction shown, extensions F and F of the suction duct A may be provided,
1 these extensions being in the form of tubes having'fianges suitably bolted to corresponding flanges at the ends of the suction duct A, or otherwise secured thereto. By means of the'stufiing box andbearing arrangementdescribed, the bearings are arrangedas' closely together as is possible, so, that the shortest possible distance between each of thebearings is obtainedandajcorrect and true operation ofthei'impeller shaft results. This construction also has the-advani tags thatthe-bearingscan bearranged in'the integral extensions 17 of the pumphousing or suction inlet so that theseflbearingsican be more readily kept in 'aline'ment with the'axis of rotation of'thepump shaft,andtby providinga stufling box arrangement which positively prevents the liquid being pumped froin passing to the bearings, this construction: is made possible, so thatthe use of bearings separated 'by a, space 'ordistance'from' the pumpf hou's'ingare not necessary. 2 This arrangement is particularly desirable in a portablepump whichiis subjected to much more jarring and shocks than is ast'ationary pump.

I claim:
The combination of a substantially straight duct having openings at opposite ends thereof to receive liquid at either or both of said ends of said duct, a centrifugal pump having 1 a portion of its housing arranged Within said a duct intermediate the ends thereof, to receive 'liquid from said duct at both sides of said housing, the other portion of said pump housing being secured to said duct at a peripheral portion thereof and extending toward one side thereof and including passages for liquid from said duct to said other portion of v the housing, and a discharge passage from said housing extending to the opposite side of said duct.
