ALFRED n. DAHLBERG, or CHICAGO, rumors CUTTING COMPOUND 03 LUBRICANT No Drawing.
4 An object of this invention is to provide an improved cutting oil or lubricant.
This and other objects, as will hereinafter appear, are accomplished by this invention 5 which is fully set forth in the following specification:
Broadly, the invention consists in adding ammonium oleate (NILC to the cutting oil or other compound in amounts of one fifteen percent, depending on the kind of work to be cut, and the oil with which it is mixed. For average Work I find that a V mixture of two percent of ammonium oleate is very satisfactory. While larger amounts of the ammonium oleate are sometimes desir-' able, the result is not enough better to warrant the increased cost.
The cutting oil with which it-is mixed may be any of the mineral, fish, animal, vegetable,
or saponifiable oils, or combinations of these used for this purpose with screw machines,
turret lathes, and other machine tools where cutting metal can be done much faster and better by keeping the cutting tool flooded with a suitable cutting compound or oil. By
- the addition of ammonium oleate the cutting can be done better, much more rapidly, and
.with the generation of much less heat than where the same lubricant is used, but without the ammonium oleate. As a result the work,
the tool and the cutting oil, or compound, re-
mains much cooler. With these oils is in-- cluded also the so-called soluble oils or water compounds now used for cutting, grindin drawing, tapping, threading, etc. The
so uble oils include'sulphonated orphenolated cotton-seedoil, soya-bean oil,'rape-seed oil, olive oil, cocoanut oil, corn oil, etc.
40 The compounds described above, of which ammomum oleate forms a part, are particularly valuable for use in cutting tough metals or alloys, such as Monel metal, aluminum alloys, bronzes, brasses, etc. For light screw machine work, as low as one percent of ammonium oleate may be used with good results.
K The petroleum oils comprising crude oil,. and its derivatives, with which this substance is mixed may include such oils havin a viscosity of to 300 at F. The lubricating Application filed December 9, 1931. Serial No. 579,986.
term
PATENT: orrics qualities of these oils fongeneral lubricating purposes are also increased by the addition of ammonium oleate in the proportions mentioned. Also the lubricating qualities of greases having a viscosity of 300 to solids at 100 F. are increased by adding like amounts of ammonium oleate.
While I have shown and described buta few embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
I claim: 1. A cutting compound consisting of a mixture ofoil and ammonium oleate.
' 2. A cutting compound consisting of a mixture of oil and one to fifteen percent of ammonium oleate.
3. A cutting compound consisting ofa mixture of soluble oil and ammonium oleate. ALFRED E. DAHLBERG. 75
