REMOTE CONTROL MECHANISM FOR DOOR L ATCHES Filed Jan. 25, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Oct. 4, 1932 UNITED sures WILLIAM C. DEVEREAUX, 015 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIG-NOR TO FERRO STAMPING :&
MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MIGHIGAI\T, A CORPORATION OF MICH- IGAN nnivro'rn oon'rnon ivincnnmsiu ron noon LATGHES Application filed January 23, 1928". Seria1 No. "2v48',7v52.
This invention relates generally to vehicle door latches and consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims;
Inthe accompanying drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a latch mechanism embodying my invention showing the parts in V ogging position and dotted in neutral position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 and showing the parts inbolt retracting position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3- 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44: of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1; t
Figure 7 is a rear elevation of a portion of the case plate, showing the key-hole slot;
Figure 8 is a perspective view.
Referring now to the drawings 1 is a case plate adapted to be secured to the inner side of a door and having a lateral flange 2 at its forward edge adapted to be secured to the free edge of the door, 3 is a reciprocating bolt that is movable through an opening 4 in the lateral flange 2 for engagement with a suitable keeper (not shown), 5 isa substantially flat yoke rigidly secured to the bolt 3 and adapted to slide on the case plate 1 between struck out lugs 6, 7 is a helical spring anchored on the case plate and having a'depending arm 8 abutting a shoulder 9 of the yoke 5 and normally retaining the bolt 3 in projected position, and 10 is a rotatably mounted rollback that is operable from the outside of the door by the shank ll'of a suitable handle (not shown) to engage an arm 12 of the yoke 5 to effect a retraction of the bolt 3 against the tension'of the spring 7; i
V In the present instance the yoke 5 is retained on the case plate 1 between the guide lugs 6 by means of a headed stud 13 that projects laterally from the body of the yoke and engages a key hole slot '14 in the case plate 1. Preferably this slot 14: is spaced from the lateral flange 2 so thatvthe shank 15 of the stud 13 on the yoke will normally be in the narrow elongated portion 16 of the slot when the parts are assembled and in operative position, but may be received the circiilar' portion. 1? of said slot either before the roll back 10' is mounted in place or after it has been removed from the case plate;
For retracting the bolt 3 from the inner side of the door I have provided a lever'18 thatis swingingly mounted on the inner side of the door at a point remote from the case plate 1 and that, isv operatively connected to theyoke 5. by suitable links 19 and 20. As shown, the; lever is non-rotatably secured to a stub shaft 21 j ournaled in an auxiliary case I plate 22 and cover plate 23, and is adapted to be: actuated from the inner side of the door by means of a suitable handle 24 that is secu-redto the stub shaft 21 at: the inner end thereof. The upperv end of this lever 18 is pivotally connected to the rear end of the link'19 and the forward'end of the latter is detachably connected tothe rear end of the link 20 which in turn is slidably mounted on and has; lost motion connections-with the yoke 5. Preferably the link 19 has an elongated slot 25 at its forward end receiving a laterally projecting substantially T-shaped tongue 26 at the rear end of the link 20. A lug 27'projects laterally from the link 20 at the proper distance from the tongue 26 to constitute a stop for the forward end of the link 19, and a tongue 28 projects laterally inwardly and forwardly from the rearend of the slot 25 and overlaps the outer free edge of the T-shaped tongue 26 so as to yieldably retain the tongue in' the slot 25.
The link 20 has two aligned longitudinally spaced elongated slots 29 and 30 respectively that receive the shanks 31 and 32 of headed studs 33 and 34 projecting laterally-from the 29 and 30 when the link 20 is moved rearwardly from neutral position by thelink 19 and lever 18 to retract the bolt, but will permit the link 20 to slide forwardly past neutral position to cause the projection to operatively engage the shoulder 36, of the roll back 10 when the link 19 and lever 18 are swung forwardly to dog the roll back. Thus the link 20 constitutes .a po rtioneof the inside bolt retracting means andhas a portion that constitutes a dog for -th'eroll back 10. Any suitable means. such as the coil spring 40 and washer 41 sleeved -on the stud shank 31, and the spring metal spider, .42
surrounding the stub shaft 21 between the lever 18"and auxiliary case plate22may be used to detachablyhold the links 19 and20 in theseveral adjustedpositions just mentioned. V ilVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantage of my invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood thatI do not limit myself towhat is herein shown'and described and thatsuch changes may be resorted to when desired as fall with-in the scope-of what is claimed. r V i 7 What I- claimias' my invention is: 1'. In a latch, the combination with a case latehaving 'a key hole slot therein, and a latch bolt carried by said icase plate, of a yoke connected tothe latch boltand'slidable over one face of said case plate, and'connections between said yoke and case plate including an element projecting from said yoke and engaging said key hole slot, thearrangement being such that the said member is in the narrow elongated portion of said slot. 2. In a door latch,-the combination with a latch bolt, and avyoke connected thereto, of means for retracting said boltincluding a pair of-links, studs projecting from said yoke and having a slotted connectionwith one of said links, and a tongue projecting from one ofsaid links and havinga slotted connection with the other of said links. I
3. In a door latch, the combination with a latch bolt, and a'yoke' connected-thereto, of means for retracting said bolt in'c'ludinga link'connected to said yoke, having a tongue projecting laterally therefrom, and a lug proj ecting laterally therefrom in spac-edrelation to said tongue, and :a second link'having a slot receiving said tongue and having an end abutting said lug.
: 4. In a latch, the combination with a case plate, a springpressed latch bolt 'yokemow back is in advanceof the yoke to'retain' the. latter on the case-plate and operable when the rollback is removed to permit the yoke .to
v be disconnected from the case plate. 7 I
5. In a latch, the combination witha case plate having a lateral flange at its forward edge, a latch bolt movable through the flange,
be disconnected from the case plate when the rollback is removedfr'om-between the flange and yoke.
6L Ina door latch, a base plate, a latch bolt associated with the case plate,- and a yoke movable over the cas'eplate and operable to actuate the bolt,- of a connection between the yoke and caseplate operable while the yoke is in certain positions relative to-the c'ase plate to prevent displacement of the yoke fromthe case plate but operable when the yokeis in a predetermined position relative to the case I plate to .permitdisplacement of the yoke from thecase plate. o
' 7. In a door latch, a case plate,-alatch bolt associated with thesc'ase plate, andla yoke movable over the case plate and operable to actuate the'bolt, of a slotted connection between the yoke and case plate operableto Y guide the yoke a predetermined distance when moved over the caseplate to prevent displacement of the yoke from the case plate while being so moved, but operable when the yoke is moved-beyondthe predetermined dis- 7 tanceaforesaid to permit displacement ofthe yoke from the case plate.
, i 3 8.: In a door latch, the combinationwith'a latch bolt and a yoke connected to and constituting a rearward extension of said bolt, a
of means for actuating-the bolt including overlapping links constituting a rearward extension of the yoke, one of said links being connected to the yoke and provided at'spaced projections, and the other link havinga slot receiving oneand having a portion abutting the other-of-said projections. T
