This invention relates to sin improvement in reels and is particularly directed to the construction of "the stop motion mechanism whereby the machine is stopped after a predetermined amount of thread has been skeined thereon, means also being provided whereby the machine will stop automatically upon the breaking of thread. This-pointer 35 is made adjustable so as to vary the timeat which the same will strike the pin 34 on the lever L, thereby enabling the amount of thread to the skein which is controlled by the pointer, as will be pointed out, to be varied as desired. The lever L is provided for preventing the operator from stopping the machine before the full yardage for which the machine has beenset has been reeled.
The drive for the count gear 36 is through a worm 37 mounted on'apivoted shaft'38 mounted above the gear and carrying at its other end, that is to say, on the opposite side of the pivot for the shaft from the worm 37 a worm gear 39 meshing with a worm 40 on the fly shaft 2.
The shaft 38 is held in position to maintain the worm 37 in mesh with the teeth of the count gear 36 and the worm gear 39 in mesh with the worm 4O by a latch 41. I
Pivoted to the righthand end frame of the -machine is a bell crank lever 42 pivoted at 43, one arm of this lever having a slot and pin connection44 with the end of a connector 45 the other end of which is pivotally attached to the weight 32. The arm 46 of bell crank lever 42 is adapted to engage thelatching finger 41 as will be presently described and also is provided with a lug 47 which is adaptedto engage alug 48. on the shaft 38 so that when the bell crank is rocked about its pivot 43 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 it will first unlatch or release the finger 41 and thereafter by engagement with the lug 48 raise the left hand end of the shaft 38 to disengage the worm 37 from count gear 36 and worm gear 39 from worm 40.
In normal operation, that is to say, when the stop motion mechanism is to operate merely to stop the machine after a predetermined length of thread has been skeined, the count gear 36 driven from the'fly shaft 2 will move 7 in the direction of the'arrow thereon until the pointer 35 which previously has been set engages the pin 34 on the weighted bell crank lever L. This will cause the lever to be rocked to disengage itsarm from nose N on the weight 32, and the latter thus being unlatched will rock to the right as viewed in Fig. 2 about its pivot 32, dropping to the dotted line position of Fig. 2. In moving to this position the weight 32'will pull the connector 45 downwardly and thereby through the bell crank lever 42 move the worm 37 upwardly out of engagement with the count gear and simultaneously the worm wheel 39 out of engagementwith the worm 40 on fly shaft 2. v r

Movement or resetting of the rod 30 will also permit the counterweight 29 to drop to its original position, which will rock the stop motion shaft 16 clockwise as viewed in Fig. 4, to impart a corresponding movement to latchingmember 17, to permit the control member 11 again to be raised into the position of Fig. 3, this return movement being prevented until the rod 30 is reset by the lug 20 on the-latching member 17 which as shown in Fig. 4 moves into thepath of the pin 19 on control member 11 when the machine trips.
It-is now merely necessary to depress the foot pedal 15 to raise the control member 11 to latched position, this same operation removing the brake 8 and permitting friction giso 5 to drop upon the periphery of drive isc 6. i
The, description thus far given of the stop motion mechanism is normal. I will now give a description of operation when a thread breaks in the machine, at which time it is desired to stop the machine automatically and as the thread may break at anytime during the operation of the machine it is to be understood of course that the pointer 35 'on the count gear 36 cannot be relied upon for this purpose. As previously described, the threads 26 are threaded through eyes 25 on faller wires 24. In a stopmotion for reeling machines comprising a measuring device, the combination of a control lever for establishing a driving connection for the machine, latching mechanism for holding said lever in operative position, and a cam carried thereby said cam being so positioned with respect to the latching mechanism as to prevent resetting of the control lever to establish a driving connection to the machine unless the measuring device has been reset.

In a stopmotion the combination of a driven disc, a, drive disc therefor, control mechanism for'moving the driven disc out of operative position relatively to thedrive disc and to apply a brake to the driven disc, a latch member for holding the control mechanism in inoperativeposition, a stop motion shaft carrying said latching member, a weight lever on said shaft, and a Weight operatively connected to said weight lever and adapted upon actuation to move the weight .lever and stop motion shaft thereby to carry the latching member outof latching position relatively to the control mechanism.
18. In a stop motion the combination of a driven disc, a drive disc therefor, control mechanism for moving the driven disc out of operative position relatively to the drive disc, a latch member for preventing actuation of the control mechanism, a foot pedal for restoring thecontrol mechanism to initial position after release of the latch member, a weight for releasing said latch member,
manually operable means for restoring said weight to operative position, and means for preventing movement under predetermined conditions of the control mechanism to latched position by operation of the foot pedal. v
19. In a stop motion the combination of a driven disc, a drive disc, control mechanism adapted when actuated to move the driven disc out of driving position relatively to the a latch member for latching said control mechanism out of operating position, a foot pedal for restoring the control mechanism to latched position, and means carried by the latch member and cooperable with the control mechanism for preventing restoration of the latter to latched position under the action of the foot pedal under predetermined conditions.
20. In a stop motion the combination of a control member, a latch member therefor, mechanism for effecting movement of the latch member to inoperative position, a foot pedal. for restoring said control member to latched position, and alugcarried by the latch memberand cooperable with the control member to prevent foot-pedal-restoration of the control member under prede termined conditions.
21. In a stop motion the combination of a control member, a latch member therefor, a stop motion shaft carrying said latch memher, a Weight lever carried by said shaft, a faller Wire operatively attached to said shaft, and means operable upon the breaking of a thread connected to said faller Wire to rock said shaft against the resistance of said Weight to release the latch member.
