Description

Sept. 20," 1932. J, SHERRICK ,878,
DUPLICATOR Filed July 27, 1,931
INVENTOR- Patented Sept. 20, 1932 moon a. SHERRICK, or SCOTTDALE, ZPENNSYL ANLA' DUPLICATOR.
Application filed July 27, 1931. Serial No. 553,285.
The invention relates to duplicators or hectographs employing the so-called gelatin copying or hectographing surfaces, usually consisting of a gelatin glycerine composition, although the invention is not limited to the use of any particular composition. It has for its objects, the provision of a construction which is relatively cheap so that the units may be discarded after the surface is worn out; which is very compact so that a large number of surfaces are available for use in an apparatus which occupies a limited space and is relatively light and easily handled; and in which the copying surfaces are protected from dirt and dust when the device is not in use. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein: V
Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the units. Fig. 2 is a section on the line II1I of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 1IIIII of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 V is a section through one of the cover plates of the apparatus. Fig. 5 is a section on the line VV of Fig. 4. And Fig. 6 is a section through a complete set made up of five units like that of Figs. 1 to 3 and two cover plates like that of Fig. 4. 1
Referring to the unit shown in Figs. 1 to 4, 1 is'a plate preferably of fiber board, having 0 on each side around the edges the wood or sheet of paper 4, water proofed with a pyfiber board strips 2, 2 and 3, 3, secured to the fiber board by any suitable means, such as cement or screws. Secured to each side of the plate by an adhesive inside the strips is a sheet of hectographing material preferably a roxylin plastic varnish and carrying a coatmg of hectographing compositlon 5, such composition being ordinarily of glycerine and gelatin in the proportions of 8 to 1.
Extending through the edges of the plates are the pin and socket members 6, 6', 6, 6 each consisting of a socket portion 6 and a pin portion 7 These members serve as additional securing means for holding the strips 3, 3 to the edges of the fiber board 1. They also act as devices'for positioning the units and releasably securing them together when they are stacked to form a set as indicated in Fig. 6. The pins fit snugly enough in the sockets so .that the units are securely t0- gether'when not in use, but atthe same time are readily separable. Thepins are so arranged that the units fit togetherwhen turned end for. end or upsidedown', thus facilitating the assembly. Five units are shown in the s et,'but this may be Varied to meet requirements. H
' When in assembled position, as shown, eight of thecopying surfaces are Pl'Otected from dust and dirt by the assembly, leaving only the outer faces of the outer units unprotected. To protect these faces, the. cover plates 8, 8 of fiber. board are. employed (Figs.
4, 5 and6). Each plateis provided-with 'a border-strip 9 around the edges. The plates are provided with pin and socket members 6 similar to the members 6 heretofore described. These members 6 inter-fit with the .pin and socket members carried by the outer units of, the set, sothat the covers arere- .leasably attached. to the'units in the same manner that the units are attached together.
The set of'units is compact and easily assembled and disassembled. When not in use,
all of the hectographing surfaces are protected from dust and injury. In case thehec'tographing surfaces of .a unit become worn out, it can be removed and a new unit substituted at a low cost, thus keeping the set intact. T he device'presentsa maximum hectocupied and; the cost as compared with the flat type of 'hectographing apparatus as heretofore constructed, this being due in a large the border'portion and consisting of flexible material coated-with a laye'r'of hectographing composition, a cover plate for one'of the sides, and pin and socket connections between said border'portio'n and the cover for secur n the cover removably-in position. 1 I

In combination, a duplicator made up of a series of units of similar size and shape provided with interfitting pins and releasably secured together by the frictional engagement of the 'interfitting pins and sockets and removable cover plates for the other with their edges flush, means for re- I leasably locking each unit to the unit or units with which it contacts and holding them against relative movements edgewise, cover plates for two outer units, and means for securing the cover plates releasably in position,
