Description
Sept. 20, 1932. s, ROTBERG DRINKING CUP FOR BIRDS Filed Jan/12, 1931 Samzei R0166)" HI 5 ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 20, 1932 UNITED STAT SAMUEL ROTBERG, F GHIGAGO ILLINOIS DRINKING our son mans Application filed January 12, 1931 Serial No. 508,203.
This invention relates to certain novel im provements in drinking cups for birds, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture. 7
Among the several objects of this invention is the provision of an improved drinking cup for birds which is highly sanitary in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved construction which permits a bird to drink therefrom without poliuting the water in the cup, thereby preventing the spread of numerous infections and contagious diseases which has been a common and serious defect in the drinking ap- I pliances for birds known and used hereto fore in the art.
A further object of the invention. is the provision of an improved drinking cup for birds which is so arranged that it is impossible for the bird to splash his feathers or feet in the cup while drinking from the same.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of an improved construction of the character described herein which is so arranged that the interior of the cup and the level or height of the water therein may be seen from the exterior.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in thenovel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. 7
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View depicting a preferred form of construction of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view substantially on the line 22 in Fig. 1.; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional View substantially on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing wherein a pre'- ferred embodiment of the invention is depicted, indicated at 10 is a housing which may be of any suitable material and of any suitable shape so as to define a front wall 11. An opening 12 is provided in the front wall 11,
and disposed over the opening 12 is atransparentplate 13 which-may be of any desired shape so as to be secured to the front wall 11 by suitable means, such, forexample, as an adhesive.
There is provided on the fro-ntwall- 11,and' unitary therewith, a frame generically indicated at 28. The frame 28 includes an upper wall 14 which depends angularly from the wall 11 and the side walls of the frame 28 are provided by diverging flanges 15 and 16 which project outwardly from and are integral with the front wall 11, while these walls 15 and 16 arelikewise integral with the top walllt of the frame 28. '05
Projecting angularly outward and upward from the front wall '11 is a lip 17 at the outer end of which is an upstanding portion 18. It is manifest, therefore, that the walls 14, 15, 16,'and 18' define an opening 19 in'the front wall of the housing 10. 5
The present invention includes acup, gener- "ical ly indicated at 20. The cup 20 includes a lower wall 21 which is mounted on and supported by the wall 18, this bottom wall 21 being secured in position by means of suitable adhesive as indicated at 22. The cup 21, in the present instance, is arcuate in cross section so as to define a vertical wall 23 which includes a portion 2 1 that is adhesively secured to the side wall 15. The vertical wall 28 of the cup includes a portion 25, similar to the portion 24:, and this portion 25 isadhesively secured to the side wall 16.
No vent opening is provided in the housing 10 and obviously, therefore, when the housing 10 is inverted and filled with water, which is inserted through the open upper side 26 of the cup 21, the water will remain therein since the air pressure on the open upper side 26 of 90 the cup'will support the water in the housing 10 whileallowing the water to feed down into the cup 21 through the open rear side 27 of I the cup. Manifes'tlyflherefore, a. bird may drink from the cup 21 since the upper side 5 26 thereof is open whileit is impossible for the bird'to stand in the cup or to shake its feathers therein.
It will be seen, therefore, from the foregoing description of my invention that I have V o and a transparent plate. over the second named opening wherebythe level-of the liquid provided an improved drinkingcup for birds which, while being economical in construction is highlysanitary in use and therefore a decided improvement over the heretofore existing art.
WhileI have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effectfthis is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit'of the invention; I, therefore, do not wish to be limited'to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
, Having thus describedlny invention, what I claim as new and desire toprotect by Letter Patent is: Y
A drinking-appliance for birds comprising a liquid containing housing including a "front Wall, having an opening therein, and
said wall being provided with another opening above the firstnamed opening, diverging flanges integral with said front-wall and projecting outwardly therefrom to define side walls about said first named opening, a depending flange integral with said front wall and defining a top wall over said opening, an outstandlng flange integral With said front Wall and including an upstanding portion providing a supporting base a cup mounted on said base, having an open upper side and including a vertical wall, said vertical wall including ear portions adapted to be secured to said sidewalls, said cup having an open inner side communicating with said housing,
in the housing-may be seen. i
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature. V SAMUEL ROTBERG.
