One of the most efiecti've types of packers employed in wells is collapsed longitudinal ly and thus forced'to fill the spac'e between the screen or liner and the interior of the easing' by being forced downwardly by the use of the settingtool employed in lowering the strainer and packer into position. The principaldifiiculty with devices of this'character heretofore has been that the arrangement for releasing the setting tool so that it may be used as a hammer in collapsing the packer has been unreliable. There is a gland member 29 connected w1th theouter upper end of the extension by means of abuttress, thread, which allows the move ment downwardly of the gland but prevents movement upwardly. Below the flange 30 at the upperend of the gland is a packing member 31, which may be'of rubber orother compressible. material, and which may be compressed outwardly against-the wal of the casing in the usual' manner.

2. A device of the character described including a stem, a housing sleeve thereon, a mandrel slidable in said housing, a packer on said mandrel below said housing,
ineans connecting said mandrel to said housing releasable in response to fluid pressure, means operative on a slight relative downward movement of said housingto indicate that said releasable means has been withdrawn from said housing, said housing when released being adapted to compress said packer.
3. In a device of the character described,

In a device of the character described, the combination including a stem, a tubular housing thereon, a mandrel telescoping within the lower end of said housing, a radially extending latching means connecting said mandrel and housing rigidly together, means engaging said latching means responsive to fluid pressure to withdraw said latchand release said housing, and a packer below said housing adapted to be engaged and set by the relative downward movement of said hous- 7 ing, and means to prevent relative of said mandrel and housing.

9. A drill stem, a housing thereon. a mandrelin said housing projecting belowthe same, a packer on said mandrel below said housing, latching dogs projecting through idly together, and a piston engaging said dogs, responslve to flu1d pressure to move downwardly and withdraw said dogs from said housing whereby said housing may be moved downwarly to set said packer, said piston having a longitudinal fluid passage adapted to be closed by a ball valve.
10. A drill stem, a housing thereon,a mandrel in said housing projecting below the same, a vpacker on said mandrel below said housing, latching dogs projecting through said housing and mandrel to hold them rigidly together, and a piston engaging said dogs, responslve to fluid pressure to move downwardly and withdraw said dogs from said housing whereby said housing may be moved downwardly to set said packer, said mandrel and houslng belng releasable from .said packer by rotation of said mandrel.
