This invention relates to an unusual and apparently novel device for clamping and holding a gardening hoe in a convenient and steady position while sharpening the cutting edge of the hoe blade with a suitable file.

Otherwise stated, the invention is in the nature of a hoe filing clamp such as may be conveniently herein referred to as a portable vise, the same being constructed for place- 1 ment on the ground or other support to hold the blade of the hoe in a steady inverted position while filing the blade thereof.

The particular structural details selected for manufacture and construction of the improved appliance will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings. In the accompanying illustrative drawings:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device as constructed strictly in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The base is in the nature of a suitably shaped and balanced frame and is generally designated by the numeral 8. The connection at this point between the leverand supporting member 19 is made through the medium of a cotter key 23 as seen in Figure 2. The lever is provided as -a clamping member andhas a hook 24 to engage over the shank of the hoe 16 as seen in Figure 3 when the hoe is placed in the vise for filing. r

The free end portion of the lever extends through a guard 25 of the type represented in Figure 4. This guard is made up of a pair of metal strap members 26 and 27 joined together in spaced relation as seen in Figure 4,

vided with a U-shaped seat 28 to receive the hoe handle. Moreover, the member 27 carries a toothed rack bar 29 with which a retaining detent or pawl 30 on the lever is selectively engageable.

As before stated, the device is relatively small and of such weight and form as to make it readily portable so that it can be carried from place to place in the field while the hoe is being used. Whenever the hoe blade becomes needlessly dull, the hoe is placed in the clamp or vise as shown in Figure 3. In other words, the hoe is inverted, the blade is en gagedin the seat or groove 14 and the handle 18 is placed in the hanger 28. Then the hook 95 24 on the retaining lever 22 is engaged over the shank of the hoe and the free end portion of the lever is pulled down to the required position so as to permit the pawland rack mechanism to come into play for holding the lever in this set position. Consequently the hoe is clamped firmly in the vise in such a manner as to permit the hoeto be held steady while resharpening the dulled edge of the 5 blade.

I claim:

1. A portable garden hoe holding vise of the class described comprising a frame having a right angularly positioned rack at one end thereof, handle seating means on the frame disposed parallel to said rack and spaced longitudinally therefrom, a lever pivotally and detachably connected at one end to the rack and provided intermediate its ends with a hook to engage over the shank of the hoe, a relatively stationary rack bar mounted on the frame, and a detent carried by the lever and engageable with the teeth of the rack bar. e v i 2. A garden hoe holding device of the class described comprising a portable support including a framehaving laterally directed end portions,spaced parallel members attached to said end portions, an intervening plate between said members defining a groove for reception of the edge of the hoe blade, a cross piece attached to the aforesaid end portion, a lever pivotally connected thereto, a. guard on said frame, the free end portion of the lever so extending through and beyond the guard, a toothed rack bar mounted within the confines of the guard, said lever being provided with a detent engageable with the teeth of said rack bar, one of the members of said guard '25 being formed withaU-shaped seat for reception of the adjacent portion of the hoe handle, and said lever being provided with a hook engageable with the shank of the hoe.
