This invention relates to a drill and particularly to improvements in the construction of the stock thereof and the means ..for supporting the disk cutter and gauge rollers in operative relation, as generally disclosed in the patent to I. C. Bell, No. 1,657,611, dated January 31, 1928.

tures in the stock 12. To permit release and removal of either cheek plate without releasing the opposite plate, these bolts are secured to the stock by nuts 26 threaded thereon and seated in recesses 27 at the opposite faces of the stock. The cone nuts when in holding position are within the outer face of the plates and are retained by a suitable locking device, such as the pin 28 extending through the nut and resting in the, groove 29 upon the face of the plate. These holding nuts perform the dual function of retaining the cheek plates in position and also holding the pins upon which the gauge rollers are journalled.
To prevent axial play due to slight differences in the length of the pin 23, the ends thereof are provided with set screws 30 which ma be adjusted to secure accurate contact wit the holding nuts 24,.s'oQthat the pin is held against both: rotativ'e and axial move ment.- It is also 'found desirable to increase the length of the operative face or teeth 31 of the reamer relative to the gauge face 32 thereof, and these teeth are therefore formed of greater length then the gauge face which provides an effective side balance for the stock and cutter disks to prevent the latter being thrown out of a vertical plane.
The head 10 of the bit is formed with any suitable water assage and in Figs. 3 and 4 the stock has a ongitudinal water passage 33 which is intersected at its base by a transverse bore 34 closed at its outer end by a plug 35 which permits access for cleaning the passages. From this transverse bore parallel passages 36 extend longitudinally of the stock at. each side of its axial center and are enlarged .at their discharge ends 37 to provide a proper flow of liquid at the disk cutters. These enlarged ends are interiorly threaded at 38 to receive a Wear sleeve 39 which may be replaced when worn. The disposition of the bores forming the water passages renders the production of the bit more economical and avoids mechanical difficulties in the drilling of the usual diagonally arranged passages through the thinner material of the stock and tongue, such as are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The operation of the invention will be ap parent from the foregoing description and it will be seen that the invention relates to improvements in the several elements of the drill bit developed in the practical manufacture thereof and effecting the improved functions as before explained.
While the specific construction of the sevei-al parts has been shown and described the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alteration may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as recited in the following claims.
What I claim, is:
1. In a drill bit, a-stock having seats at its sides and an extended tongue, vertical supports disposed in said seats, bolts retained in the stock against axial movement, means adjustable upon said bolts to clamp said supports in said seats', and rolling cutters journaled between the supports and tongue.
2. In a drill bit, a stock having seats at its sides and an extended tongue, vertical supports disposed in said seats, bolts retained in the stock against axial movement means adjustable upon said bolts to clamp said supports in said seats, rolling cutters journaled between the supports and tongue, and means at the outer face of said supports for preventing rotation of the clamping means upon said bolts.
3. In a drill bit, a stock having seats at its sides and an extended tongue, vertical supports disposed in said seats, bolts retained in the stock against axial movement and having means to clamp said supports in said seats, rolling cutters journaled between the supports and tongue, shafts for said rollers alined with the clamping means, and means upon said shafts for adjustably contacting with said clamping means.
4. In a drill bit, an apertured stock having longitudinal seats at its sides and a depending tongue, cheek plates having flanges disposed in said seats, cross bolts extended through the apertures of the stock and carrying retainin means engaging the opposite faces thereo holding nuts threaded upon the opposite ends of the bolts to clamp the cheek plates to the stock, and rolling cutters journaled intermediate the cheek plates and tongue.
5. In a drill bit, the combination of a bit stock, cheek plates fitted against the stock, a threaded fastening bolt passing through the stock, nuts upon said bolt engaging the opposite faces of the stock, means adjustable upon said bolt for clamping said plates in contact with the stock, and roller cutters journaled at the lower ends of said plates.
6. In a drill bit, the combination of a bit stock, a tongue depending from the stock, cheek plates fitted against the stock, a pair of fastening devices passing transversely through the stock, one of said fastening devices passing through the plates near their top and the other fastening device passing through the plates just above the tongue, and rolling cutters journaled between the lower ends of the plates and the tongue.
7. In a drill bit, the combination of a bit stock, a central tongue depending from the stock, the stock having vertical seats on each side and shoulders overhanging the seats, cheek plates having flanges engaging in said seats on each side of the stock and abutting the shoulders, an upper fastening bolt passing through the tops of the plates and the stock just under the shoulders, bottom fastening bolts passing through the plates and the stock just over the tongue, and cutter disks journaled between the tongue and the cheek plates.
8. In a drill bit, the combination of a bit stock, a ton ue depending from the stock, 5 cheek plates tted against the stock and hanging on each side of the tongue, a pair of fastening devices passing transversely through the stock and the chee plates at the top and bottom of said stock, axles mounted on opposite 10 sides of the tongue and supported by said tongue and the depending ends of the cheek plates, said axles being mounted in parallel and offset relation and held in the ton 0 against rotation, and disk cutters journa ed ou said afles.
