The non-rotative hollow shaft 17 extends longitudinally through and in concentric supporting engagement with the rotative ironing roll 14; and an axial rod 37 which is fixed to and adapted to form the rotative axle of the ironin roll, is rotatively mounted in concentric re ation to and extends lengthwise through the non-rotative hollow sh aft 17 from axial support n end to end thereof. Said axial rod 37 is connected at its outer end in fixed relation to the ironing roll 14 by suitable connecting means. For example, ametallic securing dog 17 having an axial opening through which the rod 37 extends, is fixed to said rod by meansof a securing screw 18' and. is fixed to the roll head 16 by a removable pin 19. The dog 17 has a concentric hollow hub 20' which projects into and isjournaled in a bronze end bearing 21' in the stationary hollow shaft. The hub 20' is fixed to and adapted to rotate with the axial rod or rotative axle 37 and the ironing roll is fixed to'said axle or axial rod.

The lever arms 67 and 75, thus connected with the opposite ends of the rock sheet 62, form an upper pair of rigidly connected rocking lever arms which with the rock shaft are operatively connected with and adapted to support and rock with the ironing shoe.
The lever arm 75, by preference, is formed of heavy stamped mctal bent into the form of a straight channel bar having a horizontal top web and upright parallel depending side flanges, and a strong perforated head or end through which the end of the rock shaft extends, as already described.
An intermediate individual actuating lever 78 is provided which is formed, by preference, of heavy metal and comprises a bottom web 79 which extends beneath and in movable relation to the lever arm 75, and integral parallel upright marginal side flanges 80 which extend upward on the outside of the opposite side margins of said lever arm 75 so as to enclose the latter between said upright side flanges. Said lever arm 78 has an integral perforated end head portion 81 through which the adjacent inner end of the ment with said lever. Sail bolt extends upward through an opening in the relatively short lever arm 75 and projects upward beyond the latter; and a helical compression spring 84, which encircles the bolt, is interposed between an annular end washer 85'on the upper end of the bolt and a washer 86 mountedon the bolt and held in yielding engagement with the top face of the lever arm 75 by said spring. The washer is held in operative. position and adapted to be adjusted upward or downward on the bolt by a nut 87 for-regulating and changing the tension of the spring as desired. The relatively long individual rocking lever 78 is thus adapted to actuate the lever arm'7 5 and thereby rock the rock shaft and ironing shoe toward 'and from the ironing roll; and the spring and rocking lever mechanism constructed as described is adapted to hold the ironing shoe in yielding operative position relatively to the ironing 'roll. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) 1

end in engagement with the bottom face of the relatively long individual rocking lever 78 and held in place by the bolt head 83 which is encircled by the spring, tends to press said lever 78 upward when the force employed for moving the ironing shoe toward the ironing roll and for holding the shoe against the ironing roll or the material operated upon is removed. (Sec Figs. 2 and 3.)
' Mounted in the hollow pedestal or frame 4 below the upper set of rocking levers above described is a second pair or set of manuallyoperable actuating levers, for actuating the upper set of levers and the ironing shoe, con-- structed and adapted to operate as follows:
Rockingly mountedin suitable bearings in a rigid stationary supporting bracket 'or frame member 90 on the machine frame is a horizontal rockingstub shaft 91, one end of which projects outward through the housing or frame, as shown in Fig. 4. To the outer projecting end of said shaft is fixed a removable actuating lever 92 which is, by prefer/- ence, in the form of a hand lever intended and adapted to be manually operated, but which is capable of being operated either by pedal and foot power or by the hand of the operator, or bypower-driven actuating means. Fixed to the opposite inner end of the rock shaft 91 is a lever 93 which. by preference, extends downward from the shaft to which it is-fixedzand at an angle relatively to the hand lever 92 which is provided with a handle 94 on its outer end in position to be conveniently opera-ted. The lower or outer swinging end of a the lever 93 is operatively connected. with the outer swinging end of the intermediate actuating lever 78 above described, by suitable flexible connecting means comprising, by preference, an upright connecting rod'95 to the 1 1pper end of which is fixed a circular disc or head 96 having preferably on both sides thereof flat side surfaces encircled by integral annular peripheral flanges 97, which project somewhat beyond the flat side surfaces and form shallow flangeencircled recesses, in each of which is mounted a friction disc or washer 98 formed of commercial fiber or other suitable form of somewhat compressible or elastic material adapted to aflord the required friction for retarding the upward releasing movements of the lever mechanism. These friction discs are inter posed between the recessed ;disc or head 96 and the adjacent flat perforated ends ofthe upright side flanges 80 on the outer swinging end of the lever 79; and a transverse screwthreaded pin or bolt 99 extends through aligned axial openings in the head 96, friction discs or washers 98 and flanged end .portions 80 of the lever 79, with its threaded end in threaded engagement with one of the flanges 80, and its head 100 in engagement I with the other flange 80. The pin or bolt 99 serves to rod 95 with said lever 78 and to clamp the pivotally connect the connecting friction-producing discs or washers 98 between the opposed friction surfaces of the head 96 and said perforated ends of the side flanges 80 on said lever 78, and the friction can be increased or'decreased and controlled by turning the bolt in the required direction for its proper adjustment. An adjustable locking plate 101 having an angular opening therethrough adapted to fit around and in fixed relation 'to the angular bolt head 100, and having a segmental slot 102 through which extends a headed securing screw 103,
in threaded engagement with a suitable threaded opening in the adjacent upright side flange of the lever 78, affords a very simple and eflicient means for securing and locking the headed clamping bolt 99 against rotation in any adjusted position in which it is set.
The lower end of the connecting rod 95 is connected with the lower swinging end of the lever arm 93by means of 104;, the lower end of which is connected with said lever arm by ahtransverse connecting pivot pin 105, and the upper end of which is connected with the connecting rod by a trans-, verse connecting pivot pin 106 which extends through the perforated ends of the integral side flanges 107. on said link and through a suitable transverse opening in the bottom end a connecting link head 108 fixed to the bottom end of said connecting rod and adapted to-extend between said perforated side flanges 107. See Figs. 2 and 4.)
A locking link 109 is pivotally connected at its lower end with the perforated bottom headed end 108 of the connecting rod 95 and the upper end of the link 104 by the transverse pivot pin 106, already described, as best shown in Fig. 4. The locking link 109 is supported at its upper end by a supporting arm 110 which, by preference, is stationary'and connected with the bracket in which the rock shaft 91 is rockingly supported. The front'end of said supporting arm 110 is provided with suitable perforated .forked arm portions 111 between which the upper end of the link extends; and a transverse connecting pivot pin 112 extends through the perforations in said forked arms and through a suitable perforation in the upper end of said locking link. The clutch-actuating link 55, above described, is connected at its lower end with the intermediate rocking lever 7 8 loosely supported on the rock shaft 62 by means of a transverse pivot pin 116 which is anchored in and projects transversely beyond the side of the said lever and extends through a suitable opening in the lower end of said link. Means is thus afforded for automatically actuating the clutch for connecting the ironing roll with the driving mechanism by and concurrently with the operation of the ironing shoe forward into operative engagement with the ironing shoe or the material tobe operated upon, and for automatically actuating said clutch for releasing the connection between the ironing roll and the driving mechanism to stop the roll and permit it to remain stationary concurrently with the releasing of the ironing shoe, and its movement away from the ironing roll.
Means is provided for causing the ironing roll to stop or remain stationary during the continued and uninterrupted operation of the driving mechanism, and independently of the position of the ironing shoe and its actuating mechanism and comprises, by preference, a small clutch-releasing rock shaft 116 which is rockingly supported in a suitable bearing 117 in the front upper portion of the machine frame or housing in position to extend under and closely adjacent to the lever arm 54 on the clutch-actuating yoke 50. Fixed to said rocking shaft 116 directly beneath the said leve'r arm 54 is an eccentric 118 which is adapted to engage and raise the said lever and operate and hold the clutch-actuating yoke in clutch-releasing position when the eccentricis rotated to its raised position by the partial rotation of said clutch-releasing rock shaft. To lower and release the lever arm 54 and permit the clutch to be engaged it is only necessary to lower the eccentric out of engagement with said clutch-actuating lever and yoke by the partial rotation of the rock shaft 116'on which the eccentric is fixed.
A small clutch-releasing hand lever 119 is fixed to the outer end of the clutch-releasing rock shaft 116 for operating it for releasing or permitting the engagement of the clutch. Stationary stops 120 and 121 on the outside of the housing are adapted to engage and limit the movements of the clutch-releasing lever 119 in either direction.
The usual electric switch mechanism 123 is enclosed within an inner housing or switch box 124 within the hollow pedestal or frame housing.
In operation, the driving mechanism is started by operating the electric switch 123 to close the electric circuit with which the then operated by pressing it downward to the position shown in Fig. 3 which causes the ironing shoe to be moved forward into operative engagement with the ironing roll and the material to be operated upon, and causes 1 the ironing roll to be releasably connected with the driving mechanism by the clutch mechanism concurrently with. the forward movement of the ironing shoe by the shoe-actuating lever mechanism and the clutch-actuating mechanism connected therewith. To disconnect the ironing roll from the driving mechanism it is only necessary to raise the hand lever 94 sufliciently to release and permit the return of the ironing shoeand shoeactuating mechanism and connected clutch mechanism to initial position.
The upward movement of the released hand lever is retarded by the friction producing means interposed between the upper end of the connecting rod and the shoeactuating lever arm with which said rod is connected thereby preventing unnecessary shocks and strains to the mechanism and danger of injury to the operator or others. The rotation of the ironing roll may be stopped without stopping the operation of the driving mechanism by operating the small hand lever 119 and the eccentric opera-ted thereby which is raised to hold the clutch disengaged and lowered to permit the clutch to engage and operatively connect the driving mechanism with the ironing roll.
We claim:
1. In an ironing machine, a rotative'ironing roll, an ironing shoe located adjacent to and movable toward and from said ironing roll, a pair of connected lever arms supported and adapted to rock upon a common axis, means for connecting one of said pair of connected lever arms with the ironing shoe, an intermediate individual actuating lever connected with the other one of said pair of connected lever arms and rockingly mounted in movable relation to and adapted to rock upon the same axis with said pair of connected lever arms, a connecting rod pivotally connected with said intermediate individual rocking lever, a second pair of connected rocking lever arms supported independently of said first-mentioned pair of connected lever arms, and means associated with and adapted to be operated by said last-mentioned pair of connected lever arms and connected with and adapted to operate said connecting rod, for actuating and locking and releasing the shoe-actuating lever mechanism and ironing shoe.
2. In an ironing machine, a rotative ironing roll, driving mechanism for rotating said roll, an ironing shoe located adjacent to and movable toward and from said ironing roll, a set of connected shoe-actuating rocking lever arms adapted to rock upon a common axis, means for connecting one of said connected lever arms in supporting engagement with the ironing shoe, a connecting rod pivotally attached to another one of said connected lever arms, a second set of connected rocking lever arms roekingly supported independently of said first-mentioned set of connected levers, means operatively conne'cted with said connecting rod and connected with and adapted to be actuated by' said sec end-mentioned set of connected lever arms for actuating and locking and releasing said first-mentioned shoe-actuating lever mechanism and ironing shoe, and clutch mechanism connected with and adapted to be actuated by said first-mentioned set of connected shoe-actuating lever arms and operatively connected with said ironing roll and said driving mechanism for connecting the ironing roll with said and disconnecting the same to start and stop the ironing roll concurrently with the operations of the ironing shoe.
