GREENE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF 'RHOl'JE ISLAND i mnenn nine.
Application filed February My invention relates to finger rings em bodying a setting for a jewel, stone, or other ornament.
The essential objects of my invention are to enable in this type of ring a saving in the thickness of the stock in the ring head without the fact becoming apparent; to obviate the employment of an interior supporting shelf or annual bearing shoulder in the bezel portion of the head thus diminishing the excessive expense and labor of such construc tion, and rendering less laborious and expensive the' accommodation of the ornaments of different thicknesses; and to reduce the number of ring. parts exclusive of the orna- 5' ment to two; and to insurea rigid and un yielding support for the ornament at all tunes. Other objects and advantages Wlll behereinafter apparent to one skilled in the art.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combina-. Itions of parts as fall wlthln the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing which form a part of this specification,
. Figure 1 is a top plan view of a ring embodying my invention,
Figure 2,a section on l1ne2-2 of F gure 1, Figure 3, a fragmentary section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4, a perspective View of the ring prior to the application of the housing.
Like reference charactersindicatelike parts throughout the views. V As herein shown 6 is a band or annulus includin g the usual shank 7 and a laterally tapering and expanded head base 8 provided with a central orifice 9 and in this instance of reduced thickness to form resultant shoul- 5 ders 10 adjacent the end of theshank, but
The orificev the shoulders are not essential. maybe of any preferred d1mens10n or contour and is formed by centrally piercing and striking up the material of the base 8 to form a.
non-resilient vertical flange 11 provided upon its top edge with rigid vertically disposed substantially rectangular interspaced bearing lugs 12. In this case the lugs are four in number, disposed eachupon one of the edges of a quadrilateral orifice.

intermediate portion of the housing is of -Ie duced diameterhaving inwardly directed peripheral shoulder 16' integral with which is a-vertical tubular portion or rim l8'whose free edge 1 9 is adapted to be engaged with the upper face of the stone, gem, or other ornament 21 by a knurling topl; bending, or other;

This is obviously, effected be fore the operation ofpermanently applying the housing to the band "structure? 7 shown 111 Figure 4:. This construction "also makslthe formation of internal peripheral supporting shouldersunnecessary and avoidsthe r prohibitive expense of a'ccoinrnodating them 7 to differing widths of ornaments supported/ a a as It will be noted that the annulus member thereby.

assemblage.
It isimportant that the lugs 12be perfectly vertical and rigid at all times,- and aside from the ornamentr2l necessary fora contributingfelement to this result is the 7 presence of the flange 11. Without this flange the lugs might under strain bend toan inclined positiomthus loosening the stone dirt to the setting or causing and admitting the ornament to escape.
I'claim: i
1. In a finger ring of the character described, a band comprising a shank and a the upper edgeof the flange and spaced from base continuous therewith provided with a central orifice, a peripheral vertical flange upon the base around the orifice, a housing upon the base exterior of the flange and concentric therewith, uprightlugs integral with said housing, and an ornament supported by I the housing resting upon the lugs.
