I ANTIRATTLING DEVICE FOR A WINDOW REGULATOR CLUTCH Filed Feb. 1, 1929 IN VEN TOR.
Herbert C. 775M Patented Sept. 13, 1932 AN'IIRATTLING DEVICE FOR A wiixrnovz] v REGULATOR .cturciiw Application fil ed February 1,;[ 92e'I ara r assess;
This invention relates to an anti-rattling device for a'window regulator clutch. I
This invention relates more particularly to an anti-rattling device for a window regulator clutch of the eXpansioncoil-spring type.
This type of clutch is old in the art and consists of a brake drum in which is assembled a slotted driving drum which has circumfer entially' mounted thereon a coilsp'ring, and
of a driven spindle having a slot with a key therein. through the driving drum, the sides of the slot in the drum engage one or the other of the bent ends of the coil spring which causes the spring-to hug the drivingdrum closely and consequently permits rotation. of the driving drum in the brake drt m. But if the driving power comes through the driven spindle, the key will engage one or the other of the coil spring ends and cause the coil spring to expand into a braking relation with the braking drum. It is the ob ect of this invention. to present an anti-rattling device for such a window regulating clutch which will serve, not only as an anti-rattler, but also as a-means for keeping the key from behind the spring ends in assembly, and as a means for preventing the key from jumping over the inner-spring endafter assembly. A further object of this device is to stop back-lash or swinging of the regulator handle.
In the drawing? i r Fig. 1 is a section of a window regulator clutch showing the position of the anti-rattling device. i f
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the anti-rattling device.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the key.
Fig. 4 is a section on line l4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the window regulator clutch mechanism consists briefly of a braking drum 1 and a HERBERT o. r ELn, or wmnson, onrenro, cenena'nssienoa'ro TERNSEEDT m rm.

other of the sides of the slot 20 in the driv ing' drum engages one or the other of the spring ends 13 and-14 and causes the coil spring; 5 to contract. The driving drum next engages the key 8 whichproj ects into the slot 20 in the driving drumand thusthe driving force is applied to the driven spindle 6. When the driving force is applied through the driven spindle 6, the key 8 engages one or the other of the bent spring ends 18 and 14: and thus causes the coil'sprin'g 5 to expand into braking relation with the braking drum1. fl f It will be noted that spring 9 causes the key 8 to frictionally engage the driving drum 3' as at 12 and this prevents the key from a limited amount of lost 'motion between the driving and driven members handle back-lash. The light gagement between the driving drum and the which permits regulator handle. The axially exerted eX- pansive force of the spring 9 also prevents the key-from jumping behind the bent end 13 of the coil spring which would render the clutch inoperative and holds the driving and driven parts firmly in position to prevent rattling.
It is evident from the above description that I have produced an anti-rattling device y ends 1O'Wh1ch engage the shoulder llof the rattling. As shown in Fig. 4, there is a sub-' frictional'en- 9 0 key stops this swinging or backlash of the for the expanding coil spring type of regulator clutch which is eflective not only as an anti-rattler but also for the purposes above drum,
specified.
