Our present invention which relates to improvements in signaling devices for automobiles is an improvement over the apparatus disclosed in our co-pending application, Se-
rial Number 243,499, filed December 30, 1927,
for signaling devices for automobiles.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved receptacle plug to be attached to the radiator cap of an automoblle for use in connection with a signaling device of the type indicated in the above referred to co-pending application.
Other objects and advantages of the method and construction herein employed will appear more fully in the hereinafter specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is an enlarged side elevation, partly in section, of the lamp casing and attaching 29 means therefor.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the T1118 6-6 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, 12 designates the radiator cap of an automobile to which is secured, by nuts 13, 14, the threaded stem 15 of the housing 16, in the interior of which is an insu- 35 lating plate 17 whereon is mounted a pair of spring contact members 18, 19 co-acting with the headed pins 20, 21 which work through holes in said plate 17 and are projected through alined larger holes 22, 23 in the housing 16 so as to register with embossments 24, 25 on a pair of strips 26, 27 fastened to a plate of dielectric material 28 secured to the detachable shell or cap 29, the latter having a flange 30 received by a pocket formed between the strip 31 and the adjacent Wall of the housing 16, the cap 29 being swung about the strip 31 as a pivot until the overlying resilient plate 32 is engaged by the top of the cap, as
shown in Fig. 2. The plate 32 has a bend 33 which acts as a stop to hold the cap in position. A stud 34of insulation material which is threaded to the plate 28 has a hole'35 which admits the wires 36, 37, which are respectively connected to electrical controlling devices or switches (not shown).
Secured to the top of the housing 16 by bolts and nuts 39 is an illuminable casing A divided bya central horizontal partition 40v intoupper and lower compartments 41, 42, respectively. An electric bulb 43, mounted in the upper compartment 41' is connected by a Wire 43 to one of the spring contact members 18, while a second electric bulb 44 in the lower compartment is connected by wire 44 to the other spring contact member 19. The casing A is provided with a green colored glass inscribedwith the WOICl Go on each side and at the front of the compartment 41, and a red colored glass inscribed with the word Wait at each side and on the front ofthe compartment 42. Differently colored glass or stencilled plates may be employed, as desired.
We have found the present combination to afford more practical advantages by reason of the simplified structure herein disclosed. I It will be noted that the parts directly associated with the housing 16 afford all the conveniences to be derived from an instantly attachable and detachable plug.
It will be apparent that the construction described and disclosed is susceptible of modification and change; hence the structure is not to be limited to the precise details as set forth except insofar as they are circumscribed within the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:
1. In an attachment plug of the character described, a housing one wall of which constitutes a support, an insulating plate within said housing adjacent to the inner face of said supporting wall thereof, a pair of resilient strips mounted on said insulating plate, a pair of pins slidable through said insulating plate and being normally yieldably pressed in projected position through openings provided therefor in the wall of said housing, a cap member attachable to said wall of the housing on the outside thereof, a dielectric plate within said cap member, a pair of metal plates mounted on said dielectric plate and being engageable respectively with said pair of pins on said housing when said cap member is attached to the housng, and resilient means for releasably holding said cap member in position on said housing.
2. In an attachment plug of the character described, a housing one wall of which comprises a support, a pair of pins slidable through openings provided therefor in said supporting wall of said housing without electrical contact therewith, resilient means within said housing and electrically insulated therefrom, said resilient means normally pressing said pins in yieldably projected condition and having provision for electrical connection with electrical elements to be energized, a cap member having a marginal flange at one side, receivable detachably by a retaining strip on the outside of the wall of said housing, an overhanging resilient plate on said housing engageable with said cap member whereby to release the latter in engagement with said housing, a dielectric plate in said cap member, a pair of metal strips on said dielectric plate engageable respectively with said pair of pins in the attached condition of said cap member to said housing, and means whereby wires maybe passed through said cap member for attachment to said metallic strips.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
FRANK J. JAROS. EDWARD r. JAROS.
