provide a blade having apertures or openings so arranged as to increase its flexibility for bending in a blade holder, as compared to known types of blades, and in which the blade will cooperate with the clamping mem bers in such a way that the blade will be retained in shaving relation to the guard member and will retain the backing member in proper relation to the cutting edges of the blade, the blade apertures being adapted to receive non-cylindrical or cylindrical studs.

My invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

Y i and at 2 is a backing member, between which members a -blade 3 is adapted to be clampedfor shaving. Suitable means may be provided for retaining the members 1 and 2 clamped against the blade. I have illustrated the backing member provided with a threaded stud. 4 adapted to pass through a substantially central hole 5 in the blade and through a hole 6 in the guard member for engagementwith a threaded recess 7 in a handle 8 for clamping the members 1 and 2 against the blade, in a well known way. On opposite sides of the hole 5 the blade is provided with spaced apertures 3a, 3a adapted to receive studs 9 that are carried by the member 1 in spaced relation, (Figs. 2 and 4) The blade-is provided with slots 10 that communicate with the apertures 3a and with the hole 5, said slots extending longitudinally andsubstantially centrally of the blade whereby flexibility of the blade is increase for bending in the holder. At 36 are transversely elongated portions of the apertures 3a inthe blade. which in eflect define an -en larged area of each aperture, some of said elongated portions communicating .with the longitudinal slotslO, (Figs. 3 and 4). .The apertures 3a have spaced oppositely disposed .edges 30, defining an area therebetween in which studs 9 or 9a are adapted to-be received. The projecting edge portions 30 have spaced oppositely extending portions 3d adjacent to the elongated portions3b of the apertures, the portions 3d being spaced apart to receive the studs. Studs 9 and the blade edges 30 are shown in non-cylindrical form. Said edges 80 are so arranged as also to receive and engage cylindrical studs therebetween. In Fig. 11 cylindrical studs 9a are shown on the guard member. The aforesaid studs serve to retain the blade on the guard member with the cutting edges in shaving relation to the guards 1a (Figs. 4

The backing member 2 is shown provided with projections 11, that are spaced apart, and are located on opposite sides of the stud 4, which projections are adapted to enter aperture portions 3?) of the blade. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the aperture portions 3?) of the blade and the projections 11 are of elongated shape and extend in their greater dimension in a direction transversely with respect to the cutting edges of the blade. In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 8 the projections 11 are so spaced as to enter the outermost portions 81) of the blade, but said projections may be placed nearer together so that they may enter the portions 3?) that are nearer to the centre of the blade, as indicated in Fig. 9. The non-cylindrical portion 4a of stud 4 may cooperate with the non-cylindrical hole 5 of the blade. to retain the member 2 in shaving relation to the blade edges, with or without the use of the projections 11, according to the backing shown in Fig. 4. By omitting the non-cylindrical .portion 4a of stud 4 the projections 11 will retain the member 2 in shaving relation to the blade edges.
In accordance with the construction described, the studs from the guard member, by engaging the edge portions of the blade apertures 3a, retain the blade cutting edges in proper relation longitudinal and alateral direction with respect to the blade, and the projections 11, that enter apertures of the blade, as well as the non-cylindrical portions 4?) of stud 4, that enters hole 5 of the blade, serve to retain the backing member in proper relation to the cutting edges of the blade. The aperture or slot-like portions 3?), that extend transverse ly of the blade, aid in increasing the flexi bility of the blade in a transverse direction while also being adapted to receive elongated projections 11. The baekin member 2 is shown grooved or hollow, at 2, whereby v the studs 9 or 9a may have suitable height without interfering with the backing member. The guard member 1 is shown provided with openings 12 to receive the projections 11.
My improvements operate to retain the blade in shaving relation .to the guards and to retain the backing in desired relation to the blade edges in a manner set forth in Letters Patent to me No. 1,633,739, issued June 28, 1927. The blade described is also adapted to receive non-cylindrical or cylindrical studs from a clamping member in a manner set forth in Letters Patent to me No. 1,658,435, issued February 7, 1928.
The studs 9, 9a and the projections 11 are adjacent within the area of the blade and are located symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the members 1 and 2, to enter the appropriate apertures of the blade,
to the guards, both in a. vent them from becoming thereof terminating in transverse whereby the blade may be fitted in various positions between the clamping members, and the cutting edges of the blade will be maintained in proper position with respect to the guards and the backing in either position of the blade.
The outermost transversely disposed aperture portions 36 of the blade are located adjacent to projecting end portions 3 of the blade that are beyond said portions 3?) and are shorter than the width of the blade between its cutting edges, the ends of the portions 3 of the blade being defined by reduced portions 3 of the blade at its ends. The width of the portions 3 of the blade at each end is substantially symmetrical between the extreme outer edge of said portion and the adjacent edge of the slot portion 3?), the uniformity in width of the portions 3 of the blade serving to permit the metal of said portions 3 to readily flex when clamped between the members 1 and 2. The backing member 2 is shown provided with lugs 14, near the corners of the blade, which project .from said member in position to enter the spaces at the reduced portions 3 of the blade. and oppose the ends of the blade portions 3, (Fig. 4). In case the blade should break at the end portions 8 when between the clamping members the lugs 14 willoppose the adjacent parts of the blade and predisplaced from be tween said members.
My improvements provide a safety razor and blade having advantageous features, since the apertures 3a, 3b, the slots 1( and the hole 5 all communicate and permit the blade to bend in a transverse direction with flexibility of such a character as to resist cracking or breaking of the end portions of the blade, at 3, when clamped between the members land 2. Since the studs locate and retain the blade with respect to the guards 1a and the blade also locates and retains the backing member 2, by means of the pro ections 11, in the proper position, the assembled parts always will be in the desired shaving relation.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. A safety razor blade of substantially oblong. contour provided with cutting edges along its longer sides, said blade having an elongated slot intermediate the cutting edges enlargeinents adjacent the ends of the blade, the end margins of the slot forming with the ends of the blade elongated flexing portions or hinges having at least the major portions thereof beyond the ends of thecutting edges of said blade. 7
2. In a safety razor blade according to claim' 1, said hinges being flexible and resil ient.
4. In a safety razor blade according to claim 1, said cutting edges being bounded at their ends by recesses in the blade corners which limit the cutting edges to a length not exceeding that of the slot.
5. A safety razor blade of substantially oblong contour provided with cutting edges along its longer sides, said blade having an elongated slot intermediate the cutting edges thereof terminating in transverse enlargements adjacent the ends, of the blade, said blade having projecting end portions narrower than the width of the blade between said cutting edges and the end margins of the slot forming with the blade-end portions elongated flexing portions or hin es having at least the major portions thereo beyond the ends of the cutting edges of said blade.
6. In a safety razor blade according to claim 5, said blade slot having a central transverse enlargement for receiving the clamping pin of a blade holder.
