Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrron.
CHARLES I. WALLACE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE DROP-LIGHTS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [87,683, dated February 20, 1877 application filed January 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern v Be it known that 1, CHARLES I. WALLACE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Drop Lights, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to so combinea movable gas-stand and the flexible supplytube of the same with a clamp that it can be readily secured to a table or stand, a further object of my invention being to provide the lower end of the stem of a gasstand with a screw-thread or other equivalent fastening device, so that it can be readily attached eitherto a clamping device or to a movable base.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the clamp of the gas-stand Fig. 2, a viewof the gas-stand detached from the clamp; Fig. 3, a sectional view of a base for the stand; and Fig. 4, a view, drawn to a reduced scale, of the gasstand clamped .to the table of a sewing-machine.
A is a tubular stem, provided at the top with the usual burner a, the lower end b being threaded, or otherwise constructed for ready attachment either to the clamp, Fig. 1, or base, Fig. 3. A branch, c, near the lower end of the stem, is constructed for the reception of one end ofa flexible tube, B, the opposite end of which is provided with the usual attachment for connection to the burner of a gas-bracket or chandelier.
The bracket D has two projections, 11 d, the former for overlapping the edge of the table, and the latter having a thumb-screw, e, furnished with a swivel, f, to bearagainst the under side of the table.
On the projection 01 of the bracket is cast a socket, h, which is threaded internally for the reception of the lower end of the stem A.
This stem may be permanently secured to the bracket; but I prefer to make it detachable therefrom, either by forming a threaded projection, b, on the stem, adapted to a threaded socket on the bracket, as described, or by some other connection-a bayonet-joint, for instance-which will permit the real y attaching of the stem to, and its Withdrawal from, the clamp, the base H, Fig. 3, being made to accord with the lower end of the stem, for while it may be desirable, on some occasions, to secure the gasstand to a table or sewing machine stand, to insure stability and prevent accidents resulting from careless handling by children, it may be desirable, 011 other occasions, to have the stand on a base, so that it can be adjusted to different positions.
The stand bracket, base and tube can be packed into very small compass, so that the device is especially applicable for the use of travelers.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the tubular stem A, its burner a, and branch 0, for a flexible tube, with the clamp D, substantially as specified.
2. The stem A, having a burner and a branch, 0, and constructed at its lower end for ready attachment to, and detachment from, a clamp or base, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. I. WALLACE.
