The object of our invention is to provide a window or door frame with provision for mounting each jamb on the sill without the necessity of nailing as the parts of the frame are being assembled.
A further object is to provide a means for j oini-ngthe sill and the ambs together, which will not only holdthern firmly in their proper relative-position, but will provide means for '10 conductingrain or the-water of melting snow or ice outwardly on the sill and away from the Window frame and the wall of the building.
Afurther object is to provide a means for joining the sill and jambs together, which will be comparatively simple and not add materially to the expense of the frame while presenting asubstanti-al appearance'thereto.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally of various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and'particu l-arly pointed out in the claims. 7 r

' Figure 16 is an end view of the sill and the outer face of the jamb; and
Figure 17 is a sectional view on the line l717 of Figure 16.
In the drawings; 2 represents a window sill having preferably the usual end notches 8 and the raised upper portion 4 and the horns-5 at each end of the sill. 6 is a shoulder at the inner edge of the sill and 7 represents notches formed in the inner edge of the sill from which transverse dados 8 extend through the raised portion 4 to a point adjacent the outer edge of the sill. A continuation 9 of the shoulder 6 is formed on the raised-sections 10 provided on the upper surfaceof the sill between-its vertical end faces and the dados 8. These dados are of suitable width and preferably correspond in depth to the raised portion 4 of the sill so that the floor orrbottom of each dado is on a line and forms a continuation of the upper surface of the sill between the raised portion 4: and the outer edge. The sill when set in. the frame will be downwardly and outwardly inclined as usual in window and 7 end of the sill. As here shown, particularly 7 in Figure 7; the lower end of the iamb is adapted to enter and slide in the sill dado ceive the edge of the sill when the jamb and sill are assembled. The formation of this recess in the tongue '13 provides a neck 15 which preferably corresponds in thickness to the depth of the notch 7 in the sill so that when the jambs and sill are assembled with the lower end of each jamb fitting snugly into its dado in the sill, the inner edge of the jamb will be flush substantially with the corresponding edge of the sill as shown plainly in the assembled view, Figure 5. The usual parting head 16 is provided in the inner face of each jamb and a blind stop 17 having a notch 18 at its lower end is provided at the outer edge of each jamband is adapted, when the parts are assembled, to assume the position shown in Figure 5. The outer face of the blind stop will then be substantially flush with the corresponding edge of the raised portion 4 of the sill.
The recess 14 formed in the depending tongue 13 of each jamb will allow the lower portion of this tongue to extend in under the edge of the sill as plainly shown in Figure 6so that when the parts are assembled, the sill and jamb will be firmly locked together and may be further secured by nailing through the neck portion 15 of each jamb into the sill or in any other suitable way. In Figure 8 a deeper recess 7* is provided in the inner edge of the sill at each end and the shoulder 6 has gains 19 adjacent the dado 8 The jamb 20 has a tongue 21 formed on the lower end adapted to enter and slide in the dado 8 while the shoulder 22 formed by the tongue passes through the gain 19 and slides on the upper surface of the raised portion of the sill. At the inner edge of the jamb a liner strip 23 may be provided instead of forming a tongue on the inner edge of the jamb and the lower end 2 1 of this liner strip depends below the edge of the jamb and is adapted to enter the notch 7 and be seated snugly against the inner edge of the sill as, clearly illustrated in Figure 11. The inner liner strip as shown in Figure 10, forms a continuation of the jamb and is used to build up this inner edge and avoid the necessity of using a wider piece of lumber for the jamb' itself.
The usual blind stop 17 is provided at the outer edge of the jamb with a recess in its lower end to provide a continuation of the tongue 21 and adapt the jamb for sliding into the dado and fitting snugly on the surface of the sill.
In Figure 13, notches 7 and 7 are provided in the inner edge of the sill at each end and the amb 2O has the tongue 21 at its lower of the sill and interlock therewith so that i the jamb and sill will be held firmly together, the liner strip 23 being 'of suitable thickness so that when the sill is inserted into the recess in the strip, the inner face of the strip'will preferably be flush substantially with the edge of the sill as shown plainly in Figure 15. The usual blind stop 17 c is provided at the outer edge of the jamb and the parting bead 16 is also provided intermediate to the inner and outer edges of the j amb.
These modifications in the manner of mounting the window and door frame ambs on the sill, provide extremely convenient means for easily and quickly assemblingthe elements of the frame, all without adding materially to the expense of manufacture. A joint such as we haveshown and described between the jambs and the sill, not only aids in holding the parts firmly together, but tends to exclude moisture from passing through these joints into the wall of the building and any accumulation of moisture in or around the joints and entering the dados will be conducted thereby to the outer side of the sill. We have described one jamb and one end of a sill but the other end of the sill and the other jamb will be a substantial duplication and while we have shown and described a window frame it will be understood that the invention is equally applicable to and may be readily incorporated in the construction of a door frame.
We claim as our invention 1. A sill having a transverse dado in its upper surface and a notch intersecting the inner end of the said dado,- a jamb having a lower end corresponding substantially in thickness to the width of said dadoand fitting therein, said jamb having a depending part to enter the notch in said sill and said depending part being provided with a recess, the lower end of the jamb forming the upper wall of the recess and adapted to enter said dado and the lower wall of said recess being seated against the under surface of the sill when the sill and jamb are assembled, the rear lower portion of the jamb back of the recess forming a neck adapted to receive a nail to hold the jamb and sill together.
2. A sill having a transverse dado in its upper surface and a notch in the longitudinal edge of said sill intersecting the inner end of said dado, a jamb having a lower end corresponding substantially in thickness to the width of said dado and fitting therein, said jamb having a depending part at one edge provided with a transverse recess, the inner vertical wall of which is seated against the corresponding wall of said notch when the sill and jamb are assembled, the lower face of said recess abutting the inner wall of said notch on the under side whereby said sill and jamb will be locked in their assembled relation.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 21st day of December, 1929. FRED C. ANDERSEN. EARL C. SWANSON.
