Thisinvention relates to traflic stanchions, and has fortan object to providean'improved stanchion adapted to replace stanchion's of the type which are now'or'dinarily'set in theroadway during the day and moved to the side of the roadway at night.
It has been Afound that removable stanchions of the kind referred to above are often tampered with by mischievous 'boys who set them in a manner to misdirect motorists or who remove. 4them to a distance for the purpose of inconveniencing the person charged with the duty of replacing them in the roadway. `Such stanchions, moreover, ,usually comprise a heavy, solid, concrete base, so that the act of moving4 them to and fromthe roadway involves considerable labor and consumes a considerable amount of time.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a stanchion comprising a base, a standard, and an indicator, the standard and indicator being separable into sections,'and the base being in the form of a receptacle sunk in the roadway and adapted 'to receive the standard and indicator parts for storage. The top of the receptacle is desirably arranged to be substantially flush with the surface of the road, and the receptacle 'is sealed in order to prevent the collection ofdirt and water, the rusting of stanchion parts, and the damaging of electrical connections whichare `desirably provided in the base.
Other objectsand advantages will hereinafter appear.

The base is in the form of a receptacle comprising a metalibox7 and fa removable cover 8. The box 7 is desirably yprovided with one or more peripherally extending ribs or .flanges I9 embedded in `the concrete. The box, atthe upper end thereof, is vpro-l vided -with' -`inner and outery .upstanding flanges l0 and ll v,defining a channel between them, and provision is made of a rabbet l2 at the inner side of the inner flange l0. The 90 channel ,and the rabbet receive, respectively, continuous downwardlyV lextending .flanges land 14 formedonthe `cover for the lpurpose of'assuring a waterftight, seal.` The standard 5 is composed of a plurality 95 of sections l5, 16 iand 17. The lower end oi the standard section 15 whichextends .into the receptacle is received in a socket 22 formed in a cross bar 23. This cross bar is supported in U-shaped bearings on brackets 24 iixed on the end walls'ofgthe box 7. The cross bar 23 is provided with a pin 25 that Aextends into the socket V22 :toria .I
Y short distance, and that lits into a slot 26 formed in the lower end of the'fstandardsection 15 for iixing theposition of orientation of lthe standard section.
An electric lamp 27 is mounted just below thev standard'andy in lline therewith, being supported in atube 28 lthat is sealed in a water-tight manner toan annular lange29 formed on the bottom of the box. 'The `lamp is connected through suitable'conductors 30 t'oa'source'oi electrical" energy. i The standard sectionl 16 includes a lower 'end portion 3l 'adapted to lit snugly into the upper end of standard section 15 and a skirt portion 82 adapted to cover and surround the upper end or' the standard section 15 so as to preclude any possibility of water entering the standard at the joint.' The upper or exposed end ofthe standardv section 16 is provided with a plurality of'window tion 17.
. portion 32 oi standard section 16 is provided with a tooth 39 which interlits with a notch formed 'in theupper end or' standard section '15 for iixing the position of orientation of the standard section 16.
' Standard section 17 comprises a lower end portion 40 adapted yto lit snugly withinthe upper end of standard section 16, a skirt portion 41 adapted to coverV and surround the upper' end of section 16, and an upper end portion 42 for supporting the'indicator 4.
The skirt portion 41 is provided with a tooth 43 adapted tointerfit ,with a notch in the upper end of standard section 16 for fixing the position of orientation of the standard secf -The indicator 4 may be of any `suitable form, but has been illustrated asa direction arrowy such fas is frequently employed. The indicator yhas aixed thereto a cap 44 which isV adapted to fit o ver and surround the upper end of standard section 42. The indicator 4 includes a finger or blade 45 that extends downwardly through the cap, and that has a flattened portion oi acylindrical stem 46 alixed to'k it. The cylindrical stem is adapted" to fit snugly within the standard-section 17. The finger 45 isgnot symmetrically Vdisposed with reference to the cap, but extends into engagement with the skirt portion of the cap at one sidegwhil'eleaving space enough for reception O the wall of standard section-17 at the opposite side. Standard section 17`is providedwith a plurality of slots v47 into anyone ofwhich the nger 45 may be litted so as to fix the indicator in any one ofa plurality of predetermined positions of orientation. f l i With a stanchion construction such as that described, it is not necessary to move the stanchion bodily lto the side lof the street at the end of theday, but the same may be disassembled into convenientunits or sections and placedlfwithin the stanchion base which is sunk inthe'roadway. This, of
course, involves removal of the lowermost standard section from vthe cover of the base.
lProvision isaccordingly madeof a sealing been described, however, since `the other is a duplicate of it.. Thel numberof standards and indicators employed in connection with a given lbasenmight, ofcourse, be increased, if desired, the construction and mode of operation being obvious from the embodiment of the invention already described. i
In Figures to 10 disclosure is made of another construction embodying features of the invention. This. embodiment lis gener-` ally like that of Figures 1 to 6 and will, theretore, be described relatively briefly, care be-v ing taken, however, to point out the features in which 'it differsfrom the embodiment of Figures 1 to 6. Y L
The stanchionY comprises a base 51 sunk in the roadway and comprises a `box 52 and a cover v53 pivotallyconnected to the box by 59 connected to it which is adapted to be let down through the other standardV sections and into the receptacle, and which is provided at the lower end thereof with a plug 59a adapted to be inserted in a socket 60 mounted in the receptacle and connected in any suitable manner with a source of electrical energy.
The top faces of the walls of the box 52 are provided with channels 6l, and passages 62 extend vertically downward 'from these channels through the box walls to conduct any water which reaches the channels to the ground without permitting access of 'the' same to the interior of the receptacle.
The uppermost sectionv63 of standard 55 carries indicators 64, the indicators being placed against opposite sides of the standard section 63 and clamped iirmly to it by means of bolts 65 and nuts 66. In this instance the standard section 67 next to the top section may be provided with a plurality of notches 68 in the upper end thereof adapted to cooperate selectively with a tooth 69 formed adjacent the skirt portion of the uppermost section for determining various selected positions of orientation of the uppermost section, and hence of the indicator or indicators 64 carried by it.
At the upper end of the standard section 63 above the lamp 57 provision is made of a cap 7 0 which extends well beyond the lateral bounds of the window openings58 and is adapted to protect them against ingress of water.
I have described what I believe to be the best embodiments of my invention. I do not wish, however, to be confined to the embodiment shown, but what I desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claim. Y
I claim:
In a traiiic stanchion, in combination, a standard and a base, the standard being composed of separable sections adapted to be stored in the base, and the base comprising a box and fixed and hinged cover sections therefor, said ixed cover section being constructed to receive and operatively support the standard.
In testimony whereof I have afIixed my signature to this specification.
MICHAEL J. MoCAUGI-ILEY.
