This invention relates to a device 1 for spreading and enlarging motor pistons.
An object of my invention is the provision of simple and. efficient means for en- .5 larging or spreading a worn or used piston,
so that its utility or efliciency will be restored completely. 1 Another object of the invention is the provision of means in the slot of the sleeve of a piston for spreading or enlarging a worn or used piston, whereby its original utility or efliciency is completely restored.
A still further object of the invention is the construction of a novel. and eflicient spreading or wedging device for use in the slot of a worn piston for causing such piston to again have one hundred per cent efliclency.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully I described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawing, and rflore particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The slot 3 has an enlarged portion 4 formed by preferably semi-circular -notches 5, 5. The slot 3 contiguous to notches 5, 5 (Fig. 2) is slightly bevelled on its outer ed e, as at 6, for the purpose hereinafter speci ed.

It is to be understood that when the face of the piston wears, it becomes too small for the cylinder. Heretofore such a situation has 5 required the use ofa new piston. By using my invention, the old piston can be used again with the same elficiency' as an entirely new piston.
The aperture 10 in the device 7 is to per- 7 mit the insertion of a punch. The device is inserted intothe slot 3' from the bottom or g inside of the piston with the flanges 11 touching the inner part of the piston, while the enlarged central portion 9 fits the semi-circular notches 5, 5 of slot ,3. is then held in place from'the bottom while the operator hammers a punch in the aperture 10 causing the enlarged or rounded part r 9 to'spread out against the notches 5. The so device 7 is of such size that approximately one eighth of an inch protrudes above the outer surface of the piston. After the center of device 7 has beenpounded andspread into place with a hammer and punch, the balance'of the device is then pounded down so that the entire surface is even with the outer surface of the iston (see Fig. 5) and being thereby firmly 'tted into the slot of the sleeve 2. This hammering pf the device 7 causes part to be forced against thebevelled edges 6, 6 (Figs. 2 and 5), wherebythe device-is securely locked in place. The enlarged portion 4 of slot 3 and the enlarged portion 9 of device 7 efliciently prevents any creeping 5 or longitudinal movement of the wedging device when in position. As a rule, the wear on an old piston reduces its outer dimension by only a small fraction of an inch, and by theuse of my invention, the piston can he spread and enlarged to the size desired, so that it will fit the cylinder like a new piston. Obviously, the device 7 can be of any size .required; Its texture should be substantially the same as that of the piston itself.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufac ture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising an elongated substantially rectangular body provided at its center with a substantially cylinder-like'portion hollow at its center, and said body providedwith outwardly extending flanges its full length and at the same side edges, substantially as shown and described.
2. A single-piece spreading device, comprising a body, said body provided With a punch-receiving aperture at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said body, and said body provided with integral flanges its entire length and extending therefrom in opposite directions.
3. A single-piece spreading device, comprising an elongated body, said body provided at its center only with an aperture formed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said body, said body provided with integral flanges its entire length, and said flanges projecting in opposite directions from the same edge of said body.
4. single-piece spreading device, comprising an oblong body provided with out- Wardly extending flanges along one edge, ard with a transverse punch-receiving aperture between its ends.
