To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN H. ARNEY, of Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hand Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to hand corn-planters; and it consists in the construction, cont bination, and arrangement of the devices hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a standard, forming the rear of the casing of the planter, and provided near its upper end with an ordinary handle, A, and B B designate side pieces, which are secured at or near their rear edges to said standard, and which receive between their front portions a vertically-sliding bar, 0, which curves outwardly and downwardly below said pieces B, and terminates in a block, 0'. Said sliding bar is confined to said side pieces by cross-plates D D. (Shown in cross-section in Fig. 1.) Said cross-plates are not attached to said sliding bar, but only to side pieces B B. The sliding bar 0 is provided with a slot, a, (see Fig. 1,) for the reception of a screw, 1), which passes through a block, 8, fitting in the pockety of the plate G, and sliding vertically in said pocket. 0 is a nut on the outer end of the screw 1). By the above-described arrangement of parts the amount of grain fed into the pocket can be varied at pleasure, the capacity of the pocket being changed, or enlarged and diminished, by sliding up or down the block .9 in the pocket, and clamping it in position by the nut c. Said standard side pieces and slide inclose a hopper, E, which is supplied with grain through a removable metal top, .E, and also a lower compartment or seedbox, F, which is separated therefrom by an inclined partition, F. cessed atfon the side nearest to the sliding bar 0, to allow the passage of the corn to a pocket, g, on the inner side of pocketplate G, which is secured to the inner side of sliding bar 0.
To the under side of said partition F is secured a brush, H, which operates to free said pocket from any grain of corn which may remain lodged therein when the said slide or sliding bar and pocket-plate are raised, as hereinafter described.
The bottom of said compartment F is formed by an inclined piece, I, which communicates, through a perforation, i, with seed-tube J, of ordinary construction, secured to standard A. To the bottom of said standard and tube is also attached the fixed jaw lc of an ordinary wedge-shaped planting-point or shoe K. jaw in the usual manner, and its upper end is connected by a metal rod, L, to the lower part of said sliding bar (3, which thus becomes also the means of opening said shoe and depositing the corn. 7
M designates a strong spring, secured to the upper part of standard A, and operating to force downward said slide or sliding bar O. N designates a'catch for holding in place the removable top E of hopper E.
This hand corn-planter isjoperated by forcing it into the ground, which opens shoe K, and causes pocket g to rise sufficiently to receive a charge from hopper E, and then raising the said planter, when the spring M forces down said pocket, so as to deliver another charge to said seed-tube I and point or shoe K. Y
The next time said planter is pressed into the ground said charge is deposited, and when said planter is raised another charge takes its place.
The seed is prevented from escaping from hopper E by a fixed shield, P, which is secured between side pieces B B; at the front parts thereof. Said shield covers the space left open at the upper part of the front of saidhopper by the downward movement of slide or sliding bar 0, when pressed upon by spring M.
