Description

p 1932. v. COOLEY 1,875,705
DISPENSING DEVICE Filed Oct. 19. 1927 i J fi 1 j/ 5 Patented Sept. 6, 1932 I u -E sr TEs PATENT oFFmE voLmER cooLmr, or ROOSEVELT, wasnme'ron nrsrnxsme DEVICE Application mm mm s, 1927. Serial No. 227,204.
The'invention relates to gasoline dispensing devices, and has for its object to provide in combination with said device and a cash register means controlled by the operation of the dispensing device, whereby upon the dispensing of gasoline the cash register drawer will be automatically stopped from operation and a signal given, both of which will be reminders to the operator that the last sale has'not beenreeorded on the cash reg ister or entered, thereby obviating overlooking entering sales.
A further object is to provide a relay controlled switch for the cash register operating circuit and which switch is operated by a circuit maker "and breaker controlled bythe operating arm of the dispensing device, whereby upon dispensing liquid said circuit maker and breaker will close a circuit for energizing the relay, consequently breaking the cash register circuit. Also to provide said relay with a latching device which will lock the cashregister drawer against being opened, and which may be used without the cash register circuit where the cash register is not an electrically operated one. I
A further object is to dispose the circuit maker and breaker a substantial distance from the dispensing device whereby danger of sparking and consequent ignition of gasoline being dispensed is obviated. Also to provide a rod connection between the dispensing device lever and the circuit maker and breaker for operating said circuit maker and breaker.
With the aboveand other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise. embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the device showing a portion of the cash register and the dispensing device. I
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sec- "oilice, consequently inaccurate records are tiona-l view through the breaker box and operating mechanism. 2 a
b Figure 3 is a view looking into the breaker Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a dispensing device particularly the type used for dispensin gasoline and from which the premeasure liquid is discharged upon the pivotal movement of the lever 2 in the direction of the arrow a. It has been found at gasoline stations'that the operator when making a sale often neglects to record the same, for instance on a cash register 3, which is generally located inside the kept. To obviate this difliculty the operating lever 2 has connected thereto an upwardly extending rod 3, which rod has its upper end pivotally connected at 4 to the arm 5 of a weighted rock lever 6, and which lever is carried by a horizontally disposed rock shaft 7, which is rockably mounted in the sleeve 8 clamped by means of a clamp 9 to a support 10; The outer end of the shaft 7 is'provided with a cam member 11, formed member, upon rockingof the shaft 9 during a discharging operation from the dispensing device, moves downwardly thereby allowing the spring contact arm 12 to form a contact at 13 for closing a circuit from the battery 14 through the electric lamp 15, wire 16,
which leads to the contact 13 and also to the primary winding 17 of the relay 18, and which primary winding is connected at 19 toa contact member 20. The other side of the circuit "is over the wire 21 to the secondary winding 22, and which secondary winding is in circuit with the battery 14 over the wire 23, therefore it will be seen'that the relay 18 will be energized upon the closing of the circuit at 13, thereby pulling downwardly the arm 24 of the rocklever 25, which action will close a circuit from the winding 17 through the contact 20, arm 24 and wire 26 to the battery 14, and which will remain in this position until the circuit is again broken at 13, and during which period thelight will be lighted as an additional signal to the operator that he has not made the entry of the W from insulating" material, and which cam I last sale. Contacts 13 do not control light 15 after it is lighted. Light 15 will remain burning indefinitely until circuit at 20 is manually operated as the current consumed by the light holds the points together at 20. The other end of the lever has a link connection 2'7 with a knife switch 28, which switch will be moved to open position upon rocking of he arn Q5 and will break a cir cuit 29, whi ii o '01s the motor for operating calla register 3, therefore it will be seen tl'at the cash register will be rendered inoperative and when the operator attempts to enter the next sale, he will be immediately notified that the previous sale l as not been entered, and at whirl time he can manually press the rock lever 20 downwardl at its inner end for closing the switch 21', and then he can emci the aegietlu bale ane tnc -ast sal v lVhere the cash recs one, the lever 25 is pro which will latch the therefore it will be of various condrawers, and if desired, the latching device may be used in combination with the current breaking switch 28 applicable to cash res strnction or to mono if desired. will be noted that the c sh drawer can be operated independently of the devices for sale of oth r goods besides gasoline 7 From the above itwill be seen that means is provided in combination with a gasoline dispensing device and a cash register whereby not only a visual signal is given to the operator, warning him he has not made th entry in the cash register but also renders the cash register inoperative whereby when the operator attempts to enter the next sale, he will be reminded of the previous sale, which has not been entered by the inoperativeness of the cash register.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A controlling device for a cash register drawer, said controlling device being remotely actuated by a lever of a dispensing machine, said device comprising an electric circuit for controlling said cash register drawer, means for breaking said cash register drawer circuit and rendering the same inoperative, said means comprising a pivoted lever, a switch in the cash register circuit and opened upon rocking of the lever, a relay for rocking said lever, a circuit maker and breaker remote to the gasoline dispensing device, a rod connection between said circuit maker and breaker and the operating lever of the dispensing device whereby upon movement of the operating lever said circuit maker and breaker will be closed, said circuit maker and breaker being in circuit with the relay, a contact carried by the relay and with which the pivoted rocker arm cooperates, said rocker arm closing a circuit upon energizing of the relay through a battery and a signalling light.
2. A controlling device for a cash register drawer, said controlling device being remotely actuated by a lever of a dispensing machine, said device comprising an electric circuit for rendering said cash register inoperative, an operating lever carried by the dispensing device, a circuit maker and breaker for controlling said circuit, said circuit maker and breaker comprising a fixed contact, a spring arm contact, cam means for maintaining said contacts out of engagement, said cam means being carried by a rock shaft, an arm carried by said rock shaft, a rod connection between said last named arm and the operating lover of the dispensing device, a rockable latching arm adjacent the register drawer, a relay in said circuit for rocking the latching arm, said circuit maker and breaker forming means whereby said rockable latching arm will be held in operative position in relation to the cash register drawer and means whereby upon breaking of the circuit at the circuit maker and breaker said latching arm will be held in operative position in relation to the cash register drawer until restored to inoperative position by the operator.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
