Referring now more particularly to Fig. 1, there is illustrated at numeral l, a body portion of produce basket of the wooden-slat type provided with girth bands or hooks 3 and 5. The upper edge 7 of the upper .band 5 is approximately flush with the upper ends Vor edges of the slats 9 which form the bottom and side walls of the basket.

The result is that there is formed around the upper, inner angle of the closed basket a smooth contour without protruding angular portions which might damage theproduce or the like located within the basket were it permitted to remain as it was in the prior basket.

Fig. 1 shows how the upper mouth of the basket is provided at opposite sides with twok upwardly extending handles, 21 adapted toY receive therethrough a springing slat 23 for holding downsaid lid 17. It has been this type of springing holder which has heretofore permitted the lid to creep in transit when no yflanges were used, whereby damage was caused, as well as by the sharp corner at the inside rim of the basket.

In Figs. 4 and 5 is lshown an alternative form of the invention applied to a wire basket. In this form, thebasket comprises a net work ofV wires 25 interwoven and connected with suitable bands 2-7 for retaining or maintaining the shape ofthe basket.

In this modification, I prefer that the inner band 1l be double tapered, both up and down, and that it be'stopped flush with the upperedge 29 of the upper, outer band 27. Instead of aligning or telescoping thefcoveiI or lid, I prefer'to extend the wires 25 upwardly as shown vat numeral 31, either at every wire or at suitable intervals so that the Vouter depending flange of the cover 17 can be made to telescope with the resulting, up-

wardly extending'series of pins or fingers formed for guiding purposes.

It isv to be understood that instead of extending the wires 25, they-may be cut ofiY at the upper edges of the rims 27, 11, and separate pins may be d-rivenfintothe upper wooden edges, or between them, to vform a seriesV of telescoping fingers adapted to prevent side slip ofthe cover. j

Itis to be understood that other means may be used for effecting the telescoping guide for a flange formed on the outer periphery of the cover. However, lI deem the' above preferred method to be the -one mostV readily adapted to actual practice.

In view ofthe above, it will beseen that the several objectsV of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained. l

As many changes could be made in carrying out the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in alimiting sense.
