My invention relates to -railway rollingA stock and consists ina novel construction and arrangement of a locomotivesmoke-box,live

In my co-pendng application, Serial'NO.' 533,325, filed April 27, 1931, I utilize a single pipe for conducting live steam. from the superheater header in the top of the smoke box downwardly to a'connectionin the cylinder saddle. A forked live steam pipe, formedV integrally with the saddle, conducts the steam from the lower end of this pipe outwardly to the valve chambers. The throttle valveis mounted either within the saddle or in the lower part of the steam pipe in the smoke box. VIn this manner, the throttle valve is accessible from the outside of the lower p0r-y tion of the locomotive andspace is conserved within the smoke box to accommodate various appliances usually located therein and the' usual openings inthe smoke box wall -for steam pipes leading outwardly to the'valve chambers are eliminated." The main object of the present invention is to retain many of the -advantages secured by the structure illustrated in the above mentioned application and at the same time to make the throttle valve housing and a part of the live steampipe integral with the smoke 3d box structure. 1

shownintegral with the main frame, although any suitable construction of these `parts may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention. Integral with the saddle 6 are exhaust steam passages 7' extending from` each valve chamber 5 inwardly throughthe saddle and upwardly into the smoke box 8. Live steam passages 9 also extend from the upright passage 10, which projects up into the smoke box at fone side of thesaddle, to each valve chamber. f-
The smoke box, indicated in general by the Figure 8, includes a cylindrical outer wall 11 .adapted to besecured to the front end of the boiler shell (not shown) and having anopening 17 in the top for the smoke stack `and another opening 18 in its bottom portion for exhaust and live steam connections; A live steam pipe 12 is formed integrally with the wall 11 of the .smoke box and connects at its bottom end with the upright passage 10 projecting through the saddle and at its top end with the super-heater header 13. A throttle valve housing 14 is formed in the pipe 12 and an opening L15 is provided in the smoke' box wall for `insertion of the valve mechanism and to permit access thereto. A partition 18 extends across steam pipe 12 adjacent' opening 15 and is provided with a renewable valve seat 18a. Steam pipe 12 corresponds in general with the curvature of the smoke box wall 11 and a portion 19 of the pipe also serves as a depressed portion of the wall, as shown infFigures 4 and 5. This portion 19 is indented from the remainino portions of the wall 11 to prevent the throttle mechanism from proj ecting too far out from the side of the smoke box .and also to permit the application of laggingor heat insulation to the pipe 12., A plate (not shown) may be secured 'over this indented portion of the casting to retainthe lagging in place and to form a continuation of the cylindrical outer surface of the smoke box.

16. In a locomotive, a smoke hoxhaving anl outer wall, a live steam pipe on the inside of said boX and integral therewith, and a throttle valve housing located intermediate the ends of said pipe and integral with said pipe and wall and having an opening leading to the exterior of the latter.
