My invention relates to improvements in printing presses, and the main object of my invention is the provision of means for locking the chase with the printing form in place I; in a rapid manner and the saving of furniture or fixtures in the lock up operation.

Another object of my invention is the provision of chaselocking' means which can be applied to presses in general and common a great amount of time and consequently a saving in expense or cost of labor.

Another object of my invention is the provision of means of the character and for the 15. purpose stated which will be adjustable to accommodate chases or formsof different sizes according to the nature of the work or job.v

Another object of my invention is the provision of a means for quickly locking the chase with its printed form or matter which will be extremely simple, strong and durable in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and from every standpoint thoroughly efficient and practical.

With these objects in view my invention consists of a printing chase lock up means embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as described and claimed and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the bed of a printing press provided with my adjustable lock up means and also showing a chase with form in locked position.

Figure 2 represents a detail view showing the tool for moving the locking bar and the locking bar in section,

Figure 3 represents a detail perspective view on an enlarged scale showing the bar with teeth and the locking bar with tooth to engage the teeth of said first-named bar.

In said drawing the numeral 1, designates the bed of the press, 2 the side bars or plates rigidly secured in longitudinal parallel relation on said bed, and 3 is the paper carrying roller, and in accordance with my invention, there are also secured to the bed 1, and abutting said side bars 2, the pair of bars 4, which at their inner edge for a suitable length are provided with a series of similar taperedjrecesses -5, with which areadapted to engage the tooth'6," at each end of the locking bar 7, which when the chase 8, with form 9, is in place upon the bed, engages one side of said chase and with the bar or fixture 10, and the adjusting screws 11 operate to firmly hold said chase with its form in proper relation upon the bed of the press, as will be apparent.

In order that the locking bar may be easily and quickly detached, the said bar is provided at each end on the upper and lower side with the inclined or tapered recesses 12,. which receive the tapered end 13, of the hand tool 14, which acts after the manner of a lever to raise the locking bar and detach it from the side bars.

The many advantages of my inventionwill be instantly apparent to all persons skilled in the art or who are acquainted with, printing press construction, and the lock up mechanism of this invention will save a great amount of time, labor and expense in the locking of the chase upon the bed; it being adjustable will accommodate the press to forms of different sizes and save a large amount of furniture or fixtures; the mechanism will insure a most positive and reliable lock; and the improvements possess every requisite to commend the invention as pra-c tical,useful and desirable.

It will be noted from the drawing that the locking bar is provided at each end with a tooth which engages the recesses or rack of the side bars 4, and that said locking bar is also provided at each edge with a pair of inclined or tapered recesses 12, which are engaged by the wedge shaped or tapered end 13, of the hand tool 14, and this is the most important feature of my invention, as the locking bar can be instantly lifted and detached by moving the tapered end 13, into one of the tapered recesses 12, of the locking bar instantly lifting and detaching the said locking bar and allowing its removal.

, I claim:

1. A chase locking mechanism for printing presses, comprising a pair of bars secured to the bed of a press and formed with a series of recesses, a removable chase engagding bar having a tooth at each end to engage a set of said recesses, and tapered recesses at the ends of said chase engaging bar to receive a tool for removing sald bar.

A. chase locking mechanism for printing presses, comprising a pair of bars secured upon the bed of a press at each side thereof and; formed with a series of recesses providing a rack, a chase locking bar hav- 10 ing a tooth at each end to engage a pair of said recesses of said b'a'rs and said looking I bar being further provided With transverse disposed tapered recesses to receive the-tapered end of a tool for prying the bar from 15 its locked position. i
